After about a year of offering a social network for beer check-ins exclusively through a web app, Untappd has finally made the switch over to native apps for iPhone and Android, enabling a bunch of new features. You can now attach pictures to your check-ins, for one. There’s also notifications for whenever someone gives one of your check-ins a “cheers” or leaves a comment. Multitasking is supported, and navigation speed is snappier than ever. Untappd was actually extremely polished as a web app. It incorporated location-awareness so you could include your Foursquare or Gowalla check-in, as well as zero in on places nearby that are offering a particular brew. Untappd also features ratings so you can remember what not to drink in the future, and full access to your friend feed in a user interface that was really indistinguishable from a regular app. Even bookmarks that were saved to your home

Their web app has been letting users share their brews of choice since 2010, but the company has just announced that they have released a pair of native apps for iOS and Android in time for the weekend. According to the company’s blog, they’re big fans of the mobile web, but “there does come a time when you reach the limitations of the mobile web and have to move to a native platform.” Understandable. Though functional, the web app only

Okay App is slow to respond to touching the icons. Cannot access settings from my Droid 2. Otherwise it is a good app.
jwriddle
Needs improvement HTC Incredible 2: Cluttered GUI. Poor UI & slow response to button actions.
Rachel
Good idea but... can't change app settings on my HTC Vivid.
mike
Camera function blows Setting functions suck, still a silly great app
Michael
Painfully awkward user interface This app just has too many useless tabs, beer search doesn't work well, and it takes too many steps to check in. Your programmers need to look at Foursquare for an example of how to do quick, efficient check-ins!
Paddy
Nice idea Settings menu option unresponsive. Thank you.
nishant
Needs come UI work App settings button doesn't work on the droid charge
cameron
Love it Great app but when I try to check in at my house it tells me it is 9 miles away please fix!
Michael
Not bad so far Functionality so far has been good, but the settings button from the menu doesn't work in ICS. It would also be great if you guys could incorporate a sharing functionality for Google+ like you already do for Facebook.
Chris S
Broken functionality Settings button doesn't work on motorola atrix. User interface lacks a lot as well. Needs barcode scanner and prompt to post to social networks on each checkin.
James
Working! Works on galaxy nexus now. Awesome app!
AKA
Worst ui I've used in ages. Simple information organization tips would really benefit this crappy app. At present, it is an enormous amount of work to use/navigate.
Brian
Restarts on pics Restarts app when taking or choosing a photo. Need fix and its a five. HTC Sensation
jonathon_mullens
Still a bit twitchy! Love this app. So glad it is an app now instead of mobile site. Some of the interface is still a bit glitchy from time to time.
Sir Michael
Great way to keep track of brews. Awesome idea. Menu>app settings doesn't seem to be working right now. Nexus S 4G
John Jr.
Still not fixed Super slow. I just changed my review. 5 stars to 1. They just updated the app and now it's super slow. Please fix and I will change my rate.
Otto
Limited Could do more
Gabe
Jazz Awesome app for a beer lover
Keith
Better on Galaxy Nexus Fixed scaling on my Galaxy Nexus. I can post pix too. Haven't tested pix on my Droid 1 yet.
Granticus
Finally can add a pic Hooray! I can finally add a pic to my post. Thanks for fixing that. Droid Charge
brk3
Ui Love the concept the UI could use some work though. Its not clear at all how to check in. Simplify!
Jr
Loving the new update. Great jog Greg & crew.
Christopher
Nexus user also Looks unreadable on the Galaxy Nexus. Had to switch back to the web version.
Rob
Ok but not good on G Nexus Does not look good on G Nexus. Cannot zoom in and so cannot read most of the text on screen.
Houston
Update Needed For ICS Needs an update. Stat.
Aaron
Doesn't scale Needs updated for Android 4.0. It currently doesn't scale properly and creates a very poor user experience on the Galaxy Nexus. Sometimes loads slowly
Gnex displays poorly! Everything displays super tiny on the Galaxy Nexus.
Carson B
Tiny fonts on Galaxy Nexus Nearly illegible fonts on Galaxy Nexus (xhdpi), plus this is just a wrapper for a webview!! Real native experience please.
Eric
Great App Could use some improvements/bug fixes but this is still one of my favorite apps.
Glenda
Love, love, love this app. I can finally keep track of my beer adventures and get suggestions in case I can't decide on the spot.
JR
Thought this update would solve past upload problems. It did for a coupla days. Not pleased, this app is like work.
Keith
Decent start but needs work. I can tell it's still using a web browser under the hood. Adding pics didnt work on my Droid. Kept refreshing back to splash screen after leaving cam.
Eric
Decent app it does the job.
Jarrett
Really wanted this Untappd to be Great This app is average at best. It's built using one of those cross platform frameworks ans the results are lackluster.
Steve
Getting better!
Mitch
A bit slow... Somewhat slow, and a few glitches. Overall quite enjoyable and user-friendly.
Kostya
Love Untappd, but have to keep using the site instead - the app doesn't work well on my HTC Hero!
Taubin
Great app I love it
Kurt
Meh... Slow and you can't add locations. Could be better.
hufflepants
Fun app, but why the automatic updates that I can't switch off?
kevin
Wish this would work Great idea, terrible execution. This app is constantly bugging up.
Frozen Summers
Perfect way to track what beers you've has, as well as see what your friends are drinking and where. Pictures are also great for beer porn
Heather
Love It!
bubbad3
Bad app Does nothing. Force close only. Waste of time
Cory
Needs work but still best It wont let me login yet im fine on the website. Adding on location for website is an endless loading. 1st Droid, yeah its old but should still work
Dennis
Crashes when I try to create account. Won't even try to see what else doesn't work with this app. Uninstalled
Ross
Awesome! Good job!
Emily Catherine
Fun, always improving I like the app, & the bugs I've found have all been fixed. Beer drinkers unite!
C-awesome
Fail Crashes when click on create account, #fail
Doug
Cool appear Great for beer lovers
kevin
Buggy, laggy, unresponsive.
Adam
Eirick
Appears to be a web portal. So you get a sluggish app that utilizes no Android UI concepts. I enjoy the service though.
Dustin
Not native.
Adam
Great app
Ken
Lamar
Love it! Glad it's officially an app!
Fubar
The mobile application is slow, and unresponsive. Pressing the back or menu button seem to not work. Only way to exit the screen was to hit the home key. Can not be moved to the SD card. Graphics and animation are a joke.
Andy
Has potential but not there yet.
Eric
Need a way to exit the application.
Evan
Love the concept, but the app is so slow. Too slow to be usable. Needs a lot of work dev.
zach
Almost perfect! Couple of tweaks and this is a 5 star app!
Seabass
Awesome idea for a website/app, but it needs some work. Back button should exit the app, speed needs to be improved, but it's a nice start.
Benjamin
Photos!
Mike
Needs alot of work. Not a native Android app
Mikey
It's a little buggy but so much nicer the the web based app. Looking forward to getting plastered with this native app!
Nickname unavailable
Thought you weren't going to make an app!!! ;) looks good so far!
Chris
Happy there is an app for android now, but it seems soooo slow. Even the webos app was faster then this one.
DJ
not a native app...basically just a wrapper for the mobile website
l.m.orchard
as far as I can tell, this is just a glorified bookmark to the mobile site. It's a native app insofar as it's an app wrapping a webview
Mac
Data entry is almost nonexistent. Keeps FCing. FIX IT.
Jason Allen
This is only a native app insofar as it pulls their mobile site into an android app wrapper. Performance issues are all over the place, and the app relaunches itself when you go back from a browser window the app itself launched! This thing is a lesson in how not to build mobile apps, or at least in how not to run your servers that are supporting your wrapper app. Uninstalling because I couldn't get it to run correctly once.
somatik
Somehow feels like a web app squeezed into a mobile app. But great there is some new stuff like checking in with a picture!
Sergio
Sign up on the website. The app will hang during sign up otherwise.
Todd
Needs exit command, so I don't have to kill app to exit
Joshua
Seems a bit half baked. It's the exact same as the mobile site so there isn't much to this "app". No way to exit either. Hitting back only refreshes.
Leona
Slow, but it's new. I had to reset my password and there's no place to change it back to something I'll remember. I hope updates for this app come so
John
Not bad for first version. A little slow and app won't close..have to force close on DroidX.
brjahu
Finally, they have an app! Used the web based for a year now and this is pretty much exactly the same... which is a good thing! Easy to use.
Greg
Works well and account signup was painless. That said, needs an "Exit" option. Honeycomb support would be nice as well.
ScooterG
Nothing different except the picture thing.
kc
This app sucks! Runs slow and needs an account to access beer list. Seen plenty better apps.
krustymonkey
First, I can't complete sign up in the app. Second, rating a beer sends me to their website rather than making an RPC to the site.
Robert
No exit option, must use home button.
Steve
Slower than the web app. Remove WebView and splash screen. I'm still going to use it over the web app though
Rhino
Jeff
Trouble logging in and, once finally in, no way to exit without home keying.
Joe Lencioni
This is a great concept, but the app could use a lot more polish.
iko
Finally untappd app ! But ... exit button would be great :) also main menu doesn't fit on my HTC wildfire screen
Max
This is just an iOS port. If you're going to call it a "native Android app" make use of native Android functionality (ie Menu options).
UnitedDiamonds
Can't get it to work, so I really have no idea how good or bad this app is. Hopefully the developer can fix the new account section so I can try it.
Claes
Untappd has all the (bad) tell-tale signs that it was built using some cross-platform framework. A pity, because I really want to love this app :(
Ryan
Never heard of untappd before... But this app is dope! Decent first release. Some sort of phone notifications would be great.
Darin
So excited this app is out. No more website. The app does everything the web based version does.
Martin
Can't connect to fb to add friends. Hard to find fb find button. Only shows up when you fail name search.
Stephan
Cant even get past the login screen on android 2.1, app feels slow and buggy
Alex
No way to quit the app, no menus, back button takes you to places you didn't expect. Great idea but all around shoddy implementation.
Rick
Juts
On bionic. Slow. Text during account creation overlaps in portrait. Cannot log in after creating account. Hangs on loading.
stopsatgreen
Just the website in a wrapper, seems to have been no effort to even make it work offline. Low-res graphics, poor performance. Poor show.
George
Wound log me in, just keeps saying "loading" HTC thunderbolt
Jeff
On my Droid Incredible the app doesn't exit when hitting the back button like it probably should. Also, can we get an icon that isn't massive and so iPhone-esque? It looks so out of place on Android.
Orlando
Can't exit out, have to use home button. Slow response, Watchdog shows it using 35% cpu. Hope an update comes out soon.
UncleBeard
I enjoy the mobile site and have been looking forward to a native app. Needs the ability to close app. Can only exit with the home key.
I love the idea behind this, but it is just an app of the website. Once it is a true app it will be perfect!
Addy
Love the concept but the ui feels like a cheap iPhone port. The tiny buttons are hard to tap and the app makes no use of the standard search+menu.
Joe LaPenna
Eats back button, sign up flow broken, juat a website in a WebView
Jimmy
Untappd promotes "native" app, but does not seem to understand what native apps are. Seems to be just a wrapper to their mobile site. Disappointed.
Bradley
I had never used the website so this is my first exposure to Untapped. I don't really care about the social aspect that much, but I am interested n being able 2 track & rate beers. That said, on my Optimus V, it is hard 2 select the tiny icons 4 the beer caps. Additionally, I will never understand why a developer does not enable App2SD on apps that don't have widgets. I only have 178MB total available 4 all apps and updates. 3.5 MBs an app adds up quick. I would also like to see persistent logins.
Chewieez
Nice to have, looks good but it's SLOW, and there is no way to quit the program. Back button cycles through all of your actions, but never exits.
homersapien619
...the only way to exit out of the app on my Samsung Intercept is to hit the Home button & then go into Task Manager to force close the app. Back button just refreshes the startup screen. Otherwise, good job for Ver 1.0!
Jason
Awesome!!
Stephen
Blake
Aaron
Simply the best!
Jordan
Love this website and now I love this app!
Lappen
Great to have it as an app!
Thomas
Finally a quick and easy easy to access my untappd addiction
Kara
Ya! Untappd finally has an app! :) love it!
John
I have been using the web version for a year or so and love this.
Alex
Oh man is this nice! Love the notifications and news features. Great job untappd!
mrdink
Untappd is the best social beer app out there.
Linds
I've been using the mobile website for a while now, and love it! Excited for a real app finally!
David
So far so good. Back button doesnt close program. But this is way better to navigate.
Rhino
Neville
Been waiting for this! Only hang up is it won't close by backing out...have to force it. Moto D3
Jonathan
Been using Beerby for a while and found Untappd a couple months ago. It's great to see them finally have a native app out. It is a little slow but a really great showing for v1.
Jeremy
Works as well as or better than the website.
Shiny
Huge amount of features and very quick and easy to use. I can add a beer in about 10 seconds as opposed to several minutes with other beer apps.
Jeff
I have been using the "web app" since March of this year, and absolutely loved it! Now I have a native app that runs even faster and looks crisper! HTC EVO
netclectic
Looks good but it won't close on my nexus s unless I kill the task. Fix this for 5 stars.
Ronald
I love it it's about time. It is so much easier and faster now to check in
Matthew
Glad to see a native app. 3 stars for being slow, but not bad for a start!
DV
Works great so far minus you can't back out using back. I have to click home.
Jim
I've been waiting for this app and just saw the link on twitter. Awesome! Long live untappd!
Tom
As a long time user of the web app, this is a great port of everything I've grown to love with the ease of a stand alone app. Good show.
Ben
Been waiting on this for a year - seems it was worth the wait. Nice for version 1.0. Love the new ability to add photos!
Chris
Stay up to date with your beer universe with the Notices tab. Faster everything! Seamlessly add photos to checkins. Must have app for any beer lover!
Aupps
I've been using the mobile site for awhile now but it's great that they finally have an app. Such a great easy to share and find new beers.
Shane
Have been on the web version since last Nov and now the untappd guys have a nice smooth looking native app, two big thumbs up for the untappd team.
Rob
Untappd took a great cross platform mobile website and made it faster with their native app for Android. Works perfectly for me, Droid Incredible.
FeTTo
Set everything up, signed out, been loading for over 10 minnutes, uninstalled/reinstalled 4 times. Cant log in after i log out..what gives?
Allen
Have used untappd for a while now and glad to see them release an app. Although I loved the website, I always tried to treat it like an app.
