The Weather Channel – one of the most popular application publishers (on a number of different platforms) – just surpassed five-million downloads for their Android application yesterday. The Weather Channel has released a pretty big update/overhaul for their Android app today. The most noticeable changes come in the user interface, which received updated graphics and the addition of custom tabs for different locations. A new widget comes in several sizes, and multiple widgets can be set each to a different location. Other enhancements include “Did you know?” weather facts and TruPoint Nowcasts for up to the minute weather data. Backend enhancements improve battery life, help with location accuracy, and decrease load times. I must admit I haven’t checked out The Weather Channel app since last year, having uninstalled it long ago due to an ugly interface and no real benefits over other weather apps. Good old QR codes. To some people they are brilliant and to others they are just random barcode thingies that they have no clue about other than they look like barcode thingies. If you’re in the latter group, read this. If you’re in the former group watch this: Pretty cool little integration, right? I wonder if more TV stations will start doing this kind of thing. Unfortunately the animation comes up and you only have about 5 seconds to pull your phone out and then you have about 8 seconds to scan it. Ample time? I don't have the temp icon in my notification bar this is really the reason I downloaded this app and because of the great reviews. Everything else works fine love this app on my Droid Razr Maxx. Please fix this issue on my phone really sucks I can't enjoy that convenience.

Pros: nice, clean design, simple setup. Cons: annoying notification thing (which you can't disable), "The weather channel" logo on the widgets. Also, location is quirky at times, but that's only a minor annoyance.

This app does everything I want and does it well enough. It also is loaded with things (social, videos, iWitness pictures of pets) I never use. The interface would be much more usable if it followed Android design guidelines. Additionally half of the screen is taken up by headers, menus, and ads. The menus can be collapsed, but it's inconvenient.

One of my favorite apps until about 3 weeks ago. Every time I try to find the weather it says "Problem receiving data. Please try again later." I have uninstalled it several times and nothing has fixed the issue. Hope this issue gets resolved ASAP.

Forget the fact that the interface sucks, ads and tiny little small section of the screen for actual information to be display, my big beef is how horribly inaccurate it is. The hourly forecast, which I am most concerned about, is frequently WAY different on the mobile app than it is on the website from a desktop browser. I mean... WAY off. According to the mobile app, today's forecast is 20-30% chance of rain until noon, then 10% all afternoon. But the website says 10% early morning, 55-85% from 12 to 3, and 10% the rest of the day. Get your sh*t together, weather channel. I could do better with a magic 8 ball.

I was happy to see that the app was updated, but it does not work on Android 4.0! :-( The last version to "work" on my tablet was 2.3.22 and it looks like pixelated garbage. I will not load it on my phone because it takes up way too much space and will not move to SD card. I would give it much higher rating when both thise issues are resolved.

The Weather Channel app is a good one but, EVERYTIME I have to Update & see these permissions, it Really makes me MADDER than ever!!! I (& I think many other reviewers) would really appreciate some JUSTIFICATION for these RIDICULOUSLY INTRUSIVE permissions!!! I have been using the app for a few weeks and I noticed that the app's memory footprint grows over time from about 9mb to over 50mb. I have also noticed more sluggish performance on my galaxy tab 10.1 since I started using this app. I am now having to reboot the device more often. Features of the app are great, but please address the memory and stability issues.

Actually, this is a VERY good app. Unfortunately though, they can't seem to figure out how to let you move it to your SD card, so it sits there hogging almost 8Mb of your phone's internal memory. That fact alone causes me to deliberate on whether I really need mobile weather info *that* badly.

I like the app functionality (except the ad ofc) but somehow it gets away of being detected by most CPU and data traffic monitoring tools, so difficult to say which burden it imposes to the battery and data plan. And when driving it uses GPS like crazy.

Got this app because it has more accurate weather predictions than my default app for where I live. Unfortunately, it has a temperature Icon that sits in the 'ongoing' section of the notification bar and can't be removed, and it seems to be causing greatly increased battery consumption. Until a setting to disable that process (and restore some usable battery life) is added, I'll have to uninstall it :-( HTC REZOUND

Would be 5 stars if there was a way to modify or remove the background of the temperate icon in the status bar. I'm not a fan of the box around the temp. When there's an alert the temp box/background is fine to indicate such, but would like the look more if the temp icon had a transparent background normally. Still a great app though.

It's accurate, the UI and widgets are beautiful, and the devs have fixed an old issue of the ad space at the top leaving too little space below to view the weather info properly. But I couldn't deal with the huge, ugly, and really obnoxious permanent notification bar icon in the latest version. Having to look at it constantly got more irritating by the day. So I reverted to the last version of the app with TB, and all is good again. If I hadn't been able to do that, I would have switched to another weather app until the problem was fixed. If (like me) you were waiting for WC to get the bugs out, your wait is now over. This is now a first class app. All locations load up quickly and paging within the app is fast too. I had an old version that worked, and was afraid to upgrade because of so many bad reviews. So I got (another) weather app, so I figured I'd chance the WC upgrade. I'm keeping it and deleting the other app now. Thanks WC !!

There's no horizontal consistency between the Web page and this application. Not to mention the forecasts are horrible. To the weather channel: don't put 100% chance for precip, it just makes you look silly when it doesn't end up raining at all.

Takes at least 30 seconds to actually show you the current weather. The radar is basically useless because it takes a minute to load and then if you try to do the motion radar you'll have to wait way longer than you want to.

Contrary to what many here are saying, this app is great. Although the radar has a bit of a lag when trying to pull the "radar in-motion", the application itself is quick. Though I must say I have a rooted Inc 2 with an overclocked Kernal and CPU. so although my device is faster than most, the data speed is just as average as the rest, so the point I'm trying to make is, if you do not have a steady 3g signal, than this app will indeed take forever to load. All in all, great app. Thanks TWC.

I switched to TWC app after weather bug starting having issues with the radar populating. It's a pretty decent app but has several issues keeping it from being really good. Why is there no refresh button for the radar???? It updates every 20 mins and that's it?? That's an eternity during severe weather!!! Weather bug allows radar refreshing , so so useful during severe weather!! Also takes an EXTREMELY long time to load radar!!! Fix these glitches and its great.

Very accurate. Gives you all the information you could ask for. No faults there. But if you don't have unlimited data, the widget will use HEAPS of data and its almost constant downloading of weather and location information drain your phone's battery right quick, as well. I noticed about a 25% drop in battery life after installing the widget. The app itself is quite good. But its resource requirements are mad if you use the widget.

It leaves a notification icon in the top notification area of my device with no way to turn it off from the settings. I tried everything. Texts are small with no option to select bigger text size. I also don't like the permission for "Automatically start at boot" b/c it increases the device's startup time. Please fix or add these options; then, I will give 5 star ratings. Meanwhile, I will uninstall this app.

This app used to work well, but now it sucks. It seems too loaded down with ads and fancy graphics, it takes forever to load and crashes almost every time. I want to be able to open up the app and quickly check the weather, not wait 5 mins for it to load, force close, and then reopen every time! Also, all of the banners and ads make the actual content hard to see when it actually does work.

This app requires massively invasive permissions. Care to share your personal calendar with TWC? How about if TWC causes your phone to make a call? Too late. You already agreed to it when you installed this. This app takes the following permissions: Your GPS location (both coarse and fine) Your personal information: "add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owner's knowledge, read calendar events plus confidential information" "record audio, take pictures" "directly call phone numbers, send SMS messages." This is way out of line for a weather app. Force stop, uninstalling immediately, rebooting. Hope that takes care of it.

The in-flux of weather alerts this app throws, even on good weather days with settings minimally configured, is atrocious. I may load it again in a year or if I hear it's been fixed. Multiple 'freeze alerts' on a day of 70F... Sheesh.

I have used this app for a year & while @ times it seems to work, it is VERY poor. Load time takes forever! Usually ends w/ a black screen or forcedclose. In a race this week my students, they were able to log into & old putt putt school computer & get the weather info faster than I could trying to open this app. Random warning constantly pop up & when you try to log in to find out the special weather statement, there is none. My phone ran slow after getting the app now all back to norm, I deleted this app!

For a free, ad-supported app, this works well -- it gives you the current weather, forecasts (from 36 hours to 10 days out), and the ads do not get in the way. It might be a challenge on a phone or device with a small screen, but works well on my HTC Google Nexus One with an average size screen.

I would love this app if not for one major issue... It takes up to 5 minutes to actually get the weather for the day. It takes forever to open up, then it locks up with no data for a while on the current forecast page. Once the information I can learn by just looking outside finally appears, I can switch to hourly, which again locks up for a while before data shows there.

I always keep my eye out for a nicer weather app, but no matter how much nicer they look, they just don't give me the information I want conveniently and quickly enough. I basically look for a widget that forecasts a few days. I also like easy access to hourly forecasts. Some other apps offer that info, but not as easy to read or access that particular info. Was a great app until they started updating it. Now it wont even open on my DROID X and when it does the rain is already on top of me by the time it opens. Gave it 2 stars because it opens if you wait the 5 minutes and press "wait" instead of "force close" then you have to do it all over again if you change to a different area in the app. IE: going from current to map or to 36 hour etc. Very unhappy and will be uninstalling this app because its unusable.

This app needs photo permission so you can upload photos of the weather in your area. It needs access to contacts and SMS so you can share the weather with friends... The app can't text or take pictures by itself, only when you initiate the functions can it do this. Think people, please. On another note, 3* because it force closes after the last update. Ok overall.

Have to remove it and find another app. Its a shame that TWC has put its name on something that steals personal information rather than simply reports the weather.

I have used this app for a year now and really like it, but the weather alert behavior does not obey my settings and I just can't take it anymore. I live in Colorado and we get weather alerts fairly regularly. I have it set to only alert on severe and to be Silent. What I get is an alert with an annoying ringing phone sound every 20 minutes for the same weather alert. I have had this problem for a year and I just can't deal with it anymore. Farewell.
