The Guardian’s Android app updated with pinch zooming, ability to download content on a microSD card
The Guardian has updated its Android app, fixing some of the known bugs (like scrolling on the homescreen) while also introducing new features. After updating, you’ll notice a new layout for live blogs, pinch zooming capability and the ability to download content and images to a microSD card. In addition, now you can set the “check for new news” option to “never” which can be handy for preserving the battery life. Moreover, series tags are now included, Favourites (yes that’s with “ou”) appear on the homescreen, and offline download notifications have a new icon and clear when tapped. In a nutshell, if you enjoy The Guardian’s content and you also happen to own an Android-based device, you’ll want to have their app running on your smartphone and/or tablet. It’s just convenient to have a favorite news source available at your disposal at any given moment. Or at least that’s the way

I would have given a 5 star if that annoying ads banner at the bottom was taken off... Otherwise an informative app.
G
Looks good A few adverts, but not enough to spoil it.
Keith
. Well put together app
GriZlore
Massive ads huge annoyance Prefer the unofficial version The superb original, yet unofficial, one is my preference.
Astrid
Okay. Odd jerky scroll. That's on a galaxy nexus, so its definitely a problem with the app.
Tim
Its ok Scroll not very slick and not as up to date as website which is weird
Chris
Great app. Great app. Easy to use. Thanks
Philip
Perfect for Desire WOO! Cache to SD card now, so well happy with this app!
vidda22
Set up what you'd like to know about and enjoy! Science, technology, business politics, US, world news. The reality as is. Thanks to Guardian!
Charles
Umm... Home page scrolling NOT fixed in update.
Oliver
Great program for quality news Great program. Easy to set up for full content downloads before you head out (time, wifi only, images). Easy on the eye section and news feed.
Aibek
Very good and quick for reading Good stuff
Boardy
Sony Xperia offline Why allow download to view offline if it needs connection for first page to display?
Amy
Samsung galaxy ace Works great, good for a quick read :-)
Matias
Ads... Now i see ads... You ruined a good app. And scrolling still keeps going crazy. Not happy.
Ross
Teeties Excellent app for an excellent paper
Olwyn
Catching the news Good reading slate

manni
Great app
Mark
Goodish. Informative news. Does not work that well with Galaxy S2 - screen flickers when scrolling and content does not fill the screen with black bands.
Michael
Best App for News
Dave
Fix the scrolling bug Guardian Anywhere is far better
dain
Great content and offline reading Very nice personalisation options for different sections, great offline reading
Tim
Guardian Works perfectly on Samsung Galaxy S2.
Shashin
Great App Easy to use. Great offline content downloading feature that downloads news at specified time. Allows the option of saving content to SD card. HTC desire user
xhupf
Best Android news app
Arun
All good but Working fine on sgs cm7. But the app limits maximum of 8 sections. That I think is too less. Otherwise a good app.
Worked initially on my HTC Desire S, but after 2 days was unable to download data to front page. Frustrating.
Daniel
.. Scrolling issue on HTC desire 2.2 still not fixed. Serious bug.
trhippy
Lovely & unusable Not working on HTC desire. Gorgeous app, better than BBC but after 1 day can't use, force close every time. Once it even disappeared completely
whalemonster
Good but... ... doesn't fill the whole screen on SGS2.
Jewelion
Fantastic! I've always been more of a telegraph sort of prrson. This app has opened my eyes to a different world view...
MIke
Can not fault this ap!
Alan
Good but buggy on sgs2 Scrolling sometimes gives a blank screen for a second, also in landscape a black bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Content is v good though.
Liam
Best News App Around Far better than any news app I've tried.
johndrinkwater
Useful Handy, wish it cached more so its ok used offline.
Chris
It don't work Last update fc on open everytime. Pull your finger out and fix it please.
NewF
Disappointing Guardian Anywhere is still WAAAAY better.
Anonymous
Good app with issues Great app but black bar at bottom and goes grey while scrolling. Galaxy S2
stuart
Excellent Works great on HTC desire
michael
Worked great for a day now force closes every time its a shame as it was great while it lasted :( please fix and would give 5 stars. HTC desire
Bonobo
Hiya. redesign. App works ok on Xperia Neo. Just needs to look and feel slicker. :) otherwise I'm better off with the actual website.
Sue
Sue Download not working since yesterday. Would be happy to pay for a better quality app..
Chris
'Useless' notification Is it possible to remove the notification saying that offline content has been downloaded? It's annoying because when you click on the notification, it neither takes you to the Guardian app nor clears the notification.
biscuitlad
Force close required on HTC Desire This app is getting worse - had to uninstall today. Unusable.
Mattikus
Force close everytime I open - HTC Desire HD
rob
Buyzone Alrigthish, web site better, massive tedious advertising impact on screen real estate...
Alex
Good, but doesn't work properly on Motorola phones This is a great app - even better than the unofficial Guardian Anywhere app. However there are a couple of problems which need to be addressed. Firstly, the lower portion of the screen on my Motorola Milestone is blank, I assume because I have a FWVGA screen which is 854x480 as opposed to the common 800x480 seen on most non-Moto devices. Secondly, the app doesn't wake wifi to download offline data, soyou can be left with yesterday's news on the tube in the morning. The other app does this flawlessly.
Elaine
Dwezel Great app, easy to use n customize, highly recommend it
D.
Great app Fab stuff. Only lost a star for the blimming annoying ad at the bottom. Good work
Rizwan
Brilliant, a must have for readers. Allows for a scheduled update so useful for the morning train. Well presented. Desire S
dweller
Pretty slick but comments not shown. Will stick with browser to view the comments
Andy
Pish Pishy
Jon
Great content, UI needs work Stable on Desire 2.2. If you throw a scrollable element you can't catch it. V annoying. Pic galleries should be full screen but captions cover them.
JD
Offline mode its excellent! Best need app, for quantity, quality and ability to ran on the loo when you have no web access. Recommend it.
Wayne
Rating? Not good. Too fancy
Vaughan
Commenting I can't see how to comment on "Comment is Free" articles. Isn't this possible? It certainly is from the desktop site.
jaam
Prefer the original unofficial app.
Bryant
The best news app besides CNN.
Cameron
Can't stop scrolling In article list you can't stop scrolling. IPhone wouldn't allow this kind of BS so fix please.
Chris
Keeps failing when I try to refresh the news.
Brian
Stopped downloading news unless connected with wi-fi ,what's the point.
Andrew
Fantastic app, especially the offline downloading but just lacks the serendipity and layout of the paper version
Alltruism
Offline content doesn't work, app says it needs an Internet connection....
Gary
Schedule over wifi never works When running both on the same phone (ZTE Blade) Guardian Anywhere manages to perform a scheduled update but this app says wifi not available. After a couple of days of not updating I went to look at the offline content and was met with white screen saying i had to re-sync - somehow the offline content had been completely zapped. Guardian Anywhere still beats this hands down.
John
Great way to access news, however the only download over WiFi option seems to be ignored. Seems to drain battery too... Will redownload when improved
Gaz
David
Pretty good. Better than having to access the mobile site all the time. Really easy to use as well.
PiP
Shame about the ghastly drawer icon!
Darren
Good start. Ad box isn't too intrusive personally. Would like to see app allow comments to be added in future versions
Henry
Installed on HTC desire. Got 'low memory' icon. Went to move to SD card. Couldn't. WTF?? FAIL
Chuck D
Needs an option to scroll down using the volume button on the side of the phone.
Ally
Really happy with this app, will see how it performs over time but so far looks good and very easy to use. I have to also add that I would pay for an ad-free version too, but then it is a quality newspaper imho :)
Salter
A solid but unremarkable news reading app which looks fine on my SGT 10.1 (except the grotesque, pixelated advert at the bottom). Content is good as you'd expect but it's not as pretty as the better readers out there and the scroll is a bit rough.
Kenny
Initial impressions are good but scrolling is very choppy , needs to be sorted for continued use. Samsung galaxy s2
damian262
Very good but takes up over 5mb and without move to SD card option I sadly had to uninstall from my Desire . Im sure they'll fix this but until then i've got to give it a miss and continue to use the excellent mobile site instead.
Ben
Mr PJ
Looks great but had to uninstall as it takes up too much space on a HTC Desire. App to SD please!
josswinn
Flashes blank screen regularly while scrolling on Galaxy S2. Ad supported and no option to opt out. Otherwise, not bad.
Kenneth
Iain
Dank
Only problem with this first release is that you can't turn off the automatic updates, with only two hours being the maximum duration.
Nic
Couple of things spoil this app for me. 1. Not able to pinch and expand articles. 2. When it fails to download, for what ever reason, the error message stays in the status bar until the phone is reset. Wel on my Desire S running 2.3.3
Nickedynick
I begrudgingly cancelled my Guardian Kindle subscription yesterday as I was finding that I didn't read it enough on the device to justify the price, and read that this had come out the day after. Pretty decent app, could do with some visual refinement though, and the ads do look bad. I'd rather see a few low-res ads than pay £9.99 a month though...
Saquib
Looking forward to updates including a widget.
Richard
Scrolling is poor. You flick it and you can't stop it going. Normally you can tap to stop. Needs fixing for me to continue using this. HTC Sensation.
Too many and varied (you guess!)
Great App, horrible icon. Good start though, but where's the App2SD for low-memory phones?
Alex
Useless on HTC desire as can't install to sd card. Download of news took up all internal memory. Shame as looked really good.
David
Needs improving: change text size, “never auto-update" setting, night mode, swipe L/R for next story, save articles, more home screen topics, no ads.
biscuitlad
Aaaargh - nearly six MB of my phone's internal memory - are you mad? Move to SD! !
Robert
Really good v1.0. Would hope to see article comments viewable on app soon. Some web links crash app. In general though, happy it finally arrived.
Andrew
Love the customisable home screen and the ability to mark sections, contributors and topics as favourites. Offline caching is a really nice feature too. I wouldn't mind paying for an ad-free version though.
Kap
I like it. Customization of the sections, decent multi media, easy sharing, pleasant reading. Can't ask for more.
Offline-Reading should make use of the SD card, not of the internal memory (or at least give us a choice). The extra Android Permission is definitely worth it. Please fix this - offline mode is useless for people on devices with lower internal storage. Please allow more than 8 sections on the home screen (surely there's no real reason for this limitation?). Allow longer refresh-intervals. 2hrs is still too frequent. How about 12 hours? 24 hours?
Anthony
Looking good Great app so far. Still messing. Beats the bbc rubbish.photos are not loading when reading articles
Peter
Waited a long time for this, and, it's good - doesn't disappoint. As @Andrew says below - really like the customisation on the home screen, not just sections, but to follow topics and have them on the home screen also. Off-line mode and scheduled download, like Guardian Anywhere ;-) works well. Solid app, thanks. One complaint... lose the ad... space is precious and I know all about the Galaxy Tab thanks - will pay for it if it helps!
coach_mcguirk
Great application, marred by weird scroll behaviour. You have to wait for a scroll to finish before you can scroll the other way. Annoying
Andrew
Hrmm..Not as good as "Guardian Anywhere" yet. Lost display space@bottom due to unwanted ad; deleting a section from your customised homepage is somewhat tough; and unlike other equivalents, can't scroll left/right to adjacent stories within section (i.e. only vertical up/down navigation within section). And still no Xword! Actually, a disappointing version 1.0
pmc
Great on HTC desire but will recommend upgrading to a more up to date phone with better storage. Desire owners should stop complaining ... its old
Tom
It looks great on my phone apart from empty space at the bottom (unfilled ad?). On my Honeycomb tablet it's quite the opposite, clearly it needs a little bit of optimization for Honeycomb.
AN Other
The stories need to be displayed in a terse compact summary form under each section. You should be able to fit two-three sections on a 4.3" (800x600) screen at a time. Why are you restricted to eight sections - well currently it would take 5 minutes to scroll through them all but anyways ;-? It's as though the navigation column from the website 2-3 versions ago has just been rehashed. Even it it looked like a cutdown version of the current website that would be better - back to Taptu.
Alekos
TERRY
Simple and sleek, great job and great app.
leedsmike
I have this scheduled to download and most mornings, 2 hours later over WiFi, it's still going - the only way I can stop it is to force close. If I do manage to complete a download, it still seems to only download 6 UK stories (for example) and for any more I need an active connection. At the moment I'd say it's prettier than Guardian Anywhere, but the latter works much better on my phone and leaves me with most of the paper available to read offline.
NiJ
Needs to allow you to resize text. Also like to schedule more than one download time. Be nice if G2 articles appeared here as well.
Bun
stable, fast, configurable... excellent news source

Nice to have an official Guardian app at last. Stable and pretty good on battery and memory.

Tim
Impressive, but there should be an ad free version.
Limdra
Not as good as I expect
Matthew
Even with save2sd this app takes up loads of space on the phone.
dcaunt
Offline/scheduled download not working. Scrolling issue on home activity. Otherwise great. HTC Desire
Rohit7827
Is really fast and all type of news like tech, culture etc in single application. But layout is ok.
Emily
Thanks for the update, really helps those of us with older phones!
Tom
It's not as good looking as the times app and offers little over the mobile website
Chris
Geoff
This has to be the best app for news on the market. Very UK & Eurocentric but excellent function and presentation.
Dave
You can't even change the font size. But I suppose you can't do that with the newspaper either ...
jamea
Ewan
The apps really worth 5 stars however the scrolling bug is quite annoying, fix that and its 5 stars all the way.
abdul
Stupid update frequencies, uninstalled!
Emad
But not as responsive, when scrolling through articles, as I would of hoped for.
Shane
When you flick scroll the page to look for something, you cant stop it until momentum runs out. Which means passing items. Other than that its great.
lostmoya
Okay, it's not perfect (eg. adverts) but it's still a vast improvement on using the mobile website. And free, too.
Ant
Excellent format to read news on, but could be made even better with the inclusion of CIF posts and an article/journalist search fiction.
Ciaran
Needs a black theme for those of us using OLED screens and prefer black backgrounds.
K
It is a very good app, however the scrolling needs to be improved on, the main page especially. Should be able to pick more than 8 categories.
Jim
The best newspaper app I've seen yet. A good way to read a great newspaper.
fluffy
Got this on my phone and tablet. No other way I'll read news now. Brilliant.
deans
Scrolling is unresponsive, and its not as sexy as the Times app. But its still the Guardian
Dibbie
Everything you need from a digital newspaper. Brilliant app. My only suggestion would be a screen rotation lock for tablet users.
Henry
Good apply. Minus 1 star for lack of text zoom ability. Overall it's my favourite news app.
Columbo
Really nice to have this on my phone. Wish it would allow more than 8 sections though.
Laki
neo
Finally an official app. Well done to the person had filled the gap with GuardianAnywhere. But this is a fine app. Not sure why a limit of 8 sections.
John
I enjoy Guardian Anywhere and this official app is offering something more engaging with multimedia etc. MUST have SD Card as Cache option though, especially as Apps2SD is now in there.
Dawid
Ok but even close to Guardian Everywhere app. Also - once you scroll the list you can't stop it - how annoying! :/
Pip
I think it's great. Can be slow if downloading full galleries but I still give it 5 stars. It's my daily read, & I love it!
Emad
Ok.. But not as responsive, when scrolling through articles, as I would of hoped for.
Jonathan
Bigger font size needed x10 mini
Richard
Previously had on iphone - similar, turnover of articles seems to vary - some hang around for few days, whereas, others come and go in a flash?
Web
Unattended download over wifi has never worked for me. Offline reading does not work. HTC desire.
[dpO]
Better now has App2sd. Still don't like the ad being there. Would rather pay the small subscription like iPhone version to remove.
fluffy
Fantastic, fast and free. Paying for the Times? Forget it. Got this on my phone and tablet. No other way I'll read news now. Brilliant.
Bun
fast refresh stable, fast, configurable... excellent news source
farroos
Good for offline reading
Tar
Brilliant newspaper served through a brilliant app. Weird scrolling issue on homepage needs to be fixed though.
Timothy
Finally a proper app from the Guardian. Keep it up..
Mark H
Just needs resizable text to be perfect
Arturs
Good app but noy updated as regularly as bbc
dopamine
No move to SD option. Severe handicap
Max
Offline feature doesn't work. Browsing favourites offline gives "no content available" screen. Also needs pinch&zoom! Text is too small.
Philip
5MB but can't install to SD card. No excuse for a new app to still not have this option. Will be at least 4 stars is this gets changed in an update
Kieran678
Icon Why the terrible low res icon makes the rest of the apps look s**t
Snow
Absolutely wonderful news app. And the great thing is that it can be read offline, too.
Chris
Needs move to SD card; don't want it taking up precious internal memory on my HTC desire!
