Square has updated its iOS app with few new features for both merchants and customers. Version 2.2 introduces the ability for merchants to reward their regular customers with discounts. Simply define what makes for a “regular customer” (i.e. how many visits per month) and assign an automatic discount to their tab when they check out. The other new thing is support for physical receipts. Square can connect to receipt printers, allowing merchants to give their customers a physical evidence of their purchase, if they fancy so. Actually, this appears to be that grand launch, although it's certainly understandable if Square tweaks the process over time with additional refinements. Vendors can sign up for Square at SquareUp.com. Square works by providing a small credit-card reader, for free, than can be inserted into the audio jack of the phone. Users sign their name using the phone, and then the card is authenticated over the phone's connection. According to reports, Square charges a flat fee of 2.75% plus 15 cents for every swipe, and 3.5% plus 15 cents for any charge where a card is not present but the number is keyed in. We've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. I couldn't sustain the volume that a Payp*l Pro account required so I was left choking on their ~7% fee! Even with their Pro account, the fee was still 2.9%. Bottom Line: Square just gave my business the edge to grow without hidden fees. Payp*l can shove their fees up their a**.

SSN and DOB I have read a few comments about paypal(r) not using ssn and dob. Here's the funny thing: While they may not ask you directly, they get your dob from Ebay, and has access to your ssn via your bank information thanks to the Patriot Act, if you don't want to give your ssn and dob out for transaction, go back to using cash.

The fees are better than traditional pay processors. US law requires all financial accounts to have ssn and dob. Meeting PCI compliance is not easy.

Received my card reader about 4 days after signing up! Download squareup and have the purchaser pay for the swipe. Payments go to my business account

Works good when I enter card manually. I got the card reader really quickly, I was amazed. However the card reader didn't fit my phone.

Works perfect. Got reader in a week. Cancelled charges do show as pending but bank fixed it easy.

WARNING: Cancel button DOES NOT work on card transactions. I lost several hundred dollars from test transactions.. Support doesn't answer tickets.
