Google has added another company to its shopping cart--this time it's U.K.-based Plink, a visual-search provider. In a blog post Monday, Plink co-founders Mark Cummins and James Philbin announced the deal as "exciting news," especially for a company that only went public four months ago. Plink apparently caught Google's eye by developing an Android app called PlinkArt, which lets you photograph and upload a snapshot of a painting that Plink then identifies to provide details about the artwork and its artist. You can then share that artwork with other people via your smartphone. PlinkArt seemed to hit it big with Android users, with Plink claiming more than 50,000 downloads of the app in just four weeks. Though Plink's co-founders stressed that PlinkArt will still be available, they won't be updating it further and will instead switch gears to focus on Google Googles, an Android app from Google that also attempts to

In its latest acquisition — its first-ever in the UK — Google has bought a small visual search startup called Plink, which makes a mobile app that recognizes works of art. The acquisition appears to be an attempt to add some horsepower to its Google Goggles visual search project. Plink’s two founders — Mark Cummins and James Philbin, both of whom have PhDs from Oxford — say in a blog post announcing the deal that they will no longer be developing their app, but instead will be working on Goggles. A Google Labs experiment that currently runs only on Android devices, Goggles lets users search for landmarks, books, documents and other objects by taking photos with their mobile device. The Plink purchase is the latest in a string of acquisitions by Google. Last fall, CEO Eric Schmidt said that the search company planned to acquire an average of one small company

Google's newest acquisition is Plink, makers of a visual search application for mobile devices called PlinkArt. The app "recognizes almost any work of art," claims the app's homepage, "just by taking a photo of it." In addition to the visual identification aspect, Plink users can also discuss the art within the app, send images to friends or order prints of the artwork. On its own, Plink sounds like an entertaining and educational tool, but one whose real-life implementations would probably be limited to a tour of an art museum or a late-night cram session for an Art History exam. But Google didn't just buy Plink for the art it can identify - that's just an added bonus. It's likely that Google bought the company more for the algorithm that powers the smart application and brains of those who invented it. According to a post on the Plink company blog, developers Mark

The company’s two founders, PhD students Mark Cummins and James Philbin, will work on Google Goggles and help enhance the search giant’s visual search applications. Plink is the relatively obscure company behind PlinkArt, a visual recognition app for Android that is able to recognize artworks and paintings simply by analyzing images. Google gets bored and buys yet another company. This time, it’s the team behind PlinkArt, an Android application that helps scan and recognize art. The visual search app Plink identifies paintings and artwork, so this was obviously a move by Google to acquire new talent and technologies that will enhance Google Goggles. Plink said so much in the blog post announcing the acquisition, saying “Google has already shown that it’s serious about investing in this space with Google Goggles, and for the Plink team the opportunity to take our algorithms to Google-scale was just too exciting to pass up.” Plink competed in the second Android Developer’s Challenge. It took first place in the Education/Reference category, and now is officially part of the Google empire. The Plink Android app will continue working as is, but the focus of the development will be applied to Google Goggles from now on.

Think I might drop for Google goggles...I used this a dew times, and it does have some trouble identifying certain types of art

Nice companion for gallery and museums except, it fails to identify too much, and museums yell at you for taking pics with it.

Would be great if the art was higher resolution. Can't even zoom in

Very cool idea. It can be a good app, if more art is searchable, and if the camera section would work. Fc when trying to take a picture. Htc desire.

Pinch to zoom and set as wallpaper are two features that this app needs to really stand out. Art recognition archive not large enough. Fails too often
