You might have your own favorite Android smartphone apps. But if you are a bit confused with all the different apps available this year, you can check out our list of 15 of the most useful ones. The Android Market may not have as many apps as the iPhone App Store yet, but there are still more than enough to be overwhelmed, and it continues to grow at a breakneck pace. To help you sort through them all, here is my latest list of the 20 most useful Android apps (this is an update of my 2010 Android list). I’ve also recently updated my list of the most useful iPhone apps and you’ll notice several of the same apps on both lists. Remember that I primarily had business professionals in mind when making this list and also keep in mind that this is a snapshot in time. The Android platform is developing so quickly that I guarantee my home screen will look different a month from now. Still, here’s my list of tried-and-true Android apps that I can highly recommend. Google Voice is a service that is so useful Read More

Top 30 Android Apps Of All Time
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Sat, 30 Oct 2010 18:15:21 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post was written by Alex Ahlund (@alexahlund), the former CEO of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile app directory Appolicious. He is currently an advisor to Appolicious. In his previous guest posts, he gave us his picks for top iPhone apps. With the ubiquitous media coverage surrounding the iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) app market, it’s important to remember that Android also is making huge headway. More than 100,000 apps are now available in the Android Market. Within the last six months, Android devices have reigned supreme, comprising 32 percent of all new smartphone purchases. There is finally a larger selection of models being manufactured and more carriers offering them. When the first Android device launched, I predicted that the OS would surpass iPhone in the coming years. While this looks to be true, those of us involved in the app industry are concerned with Read More

Google updates Maps for Android, adds Yelp-like interface | Android Atlas - CNET Blogs
Mini_discussion_bubble Product reviews and prices, software downloads, and tech news - CNET - Posted Wed, 28 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Business-ratings app Yelp just got a massive dose of competition from a much larger source. Google updated its Maps for Android (version 4.4) on Monday in the Android Market to make its Place Pages business listings more usable. In doing so, Google's solution for taking business listings mobile resembles Yelp's Android feature set more than it ever has before. Once you install the update (and in our case, reboot your Android phone), you will see a new Places icon in your list of applications. Tapping the icon pulls up a finger-friendly interface with icons for seven categories you might try to locate nearby: restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, and gas stations. It has a search bar at the top, a shortcut to Google Maps app, and a GPS location bar to round out the view. An "add" button helpfully lets you create your own shortcuts for often searched terms, like Read More
Google updates Maps & Places for quicker location discovery | andrew | Androinica

Android 1.6+ users with Google Maps should be able to find “an even better way to find places nearby” thanks to an update from Google. There is now an updated version of Maps that offers direct access to Places, which should help people looking to discover what business are located nearby. Places can now provide quick access for locating restaurants, hotels, bars, attractions, ATM’s, gas stations, or user-defined categories for common searches. The icon can be placed on the homescreen for quick access, and a search will lead to an improved version of Place Pages with details that were not previously seen in the mobile version of the site. Now you’ll get pricing, parking, hours, and menu information when available. Google has made it clear that it wants to be the go-to-source for information, and Places is an important part of that strategy in the mobile sector. To enable the new Read More
Google Maps brings Places to Android with 4.4 update – Android and Me
Mini_discussion_bubble Android and Me - Posted Tue, 27 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Back in late 2009, Google announced Place Pages for Google Maps, a service that allows maps users to gather details such as pictures, videos, menus, prices, parking info reviews of local businesses and points of interest and the ability to reserve tables at local restaurants that use the OpenTable service. Today, Google announced a 4.4 update to its Google Maps application, which brings the Places service as a standalone application for Android 1.6+ devices. Places also integrates itself into Google Maps by adding a restaurant layer, which once you select a location takes to you to the places page for nearby restaurants. From there, you will be able to map the location, get directions, call the location, or even view the location in Street View. The main screen has built-in searches for restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, Gas Stations, and the ability to add your own custom searches for future Read More
Google introduces 'Places' Android app
Mini_discussion_bubble Future Technology News & Reviews - Wired.co.uk - Posted Tue, 27 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Earlier this year, in April, Google renamed its businesses directory to "Google Places". More than 50 million shops and businesses around the world are in its database, which is searchable through the company's Maps application and website. That database has just got even more useful to Android 1.6+ owners, however, with an update to Google Maps that brings an app called "Places" to your launcher. Launching it takes you to a menu screen offering the choice of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, hotels, attractions, cash machines, and petrol stations. Select one, and Google will crawl through its database to find the very nearest locations in that category to you, using either GPS or local Wi-Fi signals to determine where you are. It'll offer the name of the location, its address, opening hours, pricing and parking info if available, a summary of reviews and the option to "star" the place on your map. Read More

Google’s Places Directory app finds local businesses | Google Android Blog
Mini_discussion_bubble Androinica - Posted Wed, 03 Jun 2009 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
John’s in a new city and is both hungry and bored. Sure, he could check the Yellowpages or find out what his hotel’s front desk recommends, but maybe he wants to know where the locals go to find a good meal and something to do on the weekend. John then fires up Google Places Directory to find some food and fun. The name Places Directory is a point-blank description of what functions it performs. The app organizes locations into categories that can be browsed or searched. A business that sparks someone’s interest can then be called, brought up in Google Maps to get directions, or added to personal favorites. The app currently supports US English and Chinese results in the following categories: If you aren’t a fan of Places, you may want to consider similar apps like Where, which searches for some of the location types in Places.
