One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that spared me a couple hundred bucks I otherwise would have spent on a sat-nav system. The navigation shows a virtual view of the road as I drive, warning me of upcoming intersections and telling me which exit I need to take off the roundabout. I use it for walking, too. Google has released the source code for an an Android phone GPS program called My Tracks, which lets people record where they've been, log journeys in Google Docs, and post their trip maps online. "You can expect My Tracks to become better than ever with the contributions we hope it will receive from other developers, and also that many applications which work side-by-side with My Tracks will be written," Google engineer Rodrigo Damazio said in an e-mail list posting Friday. Really good app to keep track of the aforementioned things. I always use this app to keep track of my hikes with my friends and my bike rides with my family. I also use it to track my runs when I run with my dogs. The only thing I wish you could do is edit the recorded tracks for those times when you accidentally forget to turn off the app. Really love the integration with Google Earth so you can playback you tracks.

I think this app is great but will be uninstalling due to battery drain even when not running. Numerous complaints about this if you do a search but still not fixed.

The app has been very glitchy in recent months, increasingly not recording tracks & jumping between stats that I didn't click on. However, if I'm honest I'm unsure if the problems are down to my handset given the number of positive reviews for the app.

Samsung Droid Charge.... Ever since I installed the last My Tracks update, my phone hangs...I have to pull the battery about half the time I use the app to restore the phone to working order. What's up with that???

I used this to track my location while I did the Three Peaks Challenge which involves hiking up & down mountains in the middle of nowhere for 24 hours straight. It worked almost perfectly except for a small blip in Scotland where it didn't seem to record anything; I was really surprised at how little battery it used too. The option to export to Google Maps, Fusion Tables & Spreadsheets is a lovely addition too. All in all, great app!

I love this app, however I can't seem to get any reasonable readings out of it lately. I went for a jog on a flat path around a small pond (with a clear view of the sky the entire time) and it had me speeding out into the wilderness and back. It recorded my top speed at 44MPH!!!! While I wish it were true, it's not. My run last night, according to Google Maps was 3 miles dead on, MyTracks recorded that I had traveled 4.72 miles. I don't know why it doesn't work as well as it used to, but it would be nice to get the accuracy back. Right now my tracks are nothing more than a novelty since the speed, elevation, and distances are wildly inaccurate. Please fix this Google, I really used to love this app!!!

Works ok apart from track upload. Stopped uploading after one successful attempt. Have to reload the app to upload any tracks on galaxy SII . Same problem with HTC Desire.

according to this application, I walked 81 miles today at 90 mph and it took me 791 hours to walk that distance between 2 and 5 PM. I don't know what this application is tracking, but those are not my tracks. 4G and gps on. EVO 3d is a crappy phone like all HTC garbage!

In China, many gps-to-map mappings seem to be displaced. Maps correctly puts me on the toad, but mytracks always puts me half a km north of my actual position. Otherwise fine app!

Had this on my EVO 4g and loved it used it all the time on my joggs and bike rides could be out for hrs and ran just fine but then i got the wildfire S and it sucks up too much battery too fast maybe an hr of it running and my battery is dead....PLEASE FIX THE PROBLEM SO I CAN KEEP USING THIS APP....thank you

I like this app, it works okay for the most part. I really like how it tracks your speed, distance, total and moving time, and average speed. I use it to map my bike rides and to input all the data since I upload the GPX file. There is one major problem though which I hope will get fixed in the next update, which is really hampering and degrading from its use. A lot of times it would go haywire and set a marker or track me going over 100,000 MPH and on the map it says I was in the ocean off of Africa. It really bothers me when this happens since it renders my data useless. I would also like to see a "Pause Recording" button for whenever I stop so it doesn't track me. Also I believe that it tracks me and uses my GPS even when I am not using the app which also bothers me because it is using my battery for no reason. Please fix these issues Google it really is a good app and I don't want to have to remove it because of these stupid things.

This is the easiest to use tracks app that I've seen. It also integrates exceptionally well with other Google applications for easy saving and sharing of tracks. But it always seems to inflate the distance and speed at least when I use it for walking and hiking. I recorded a track earlier today and My Tracks shows it as 2.25 miles. I uploaded the same track to Google Maps which shows it as 1.8 miles. Google Earth also shows the track as 1.8 miles. I've also compared tracks with My Tracks and other track recording apps and My Tracks always seems to be inflated.

The Program is very helpful however there seems to be some inconsistencies between Max speed and the max speeds shown on the graph. The graph shows that I did not exceed 20 mph during my entire bike trip yet in the statistics overview page it says my my max speed was 27mph. I don't know which is right. In subsequent trips I have noticed that the max speed always has this inconsistency. It is not just my HTC Sensation 4G, since a coworker checked his tracks and found the same apparent inconsistency. If this problem is fixed I will give the program 5 stars easy! Update: I can ride a bike over 100 miles now! The program reported that I went unearthly speeds and distances. I used a Bluetooth speakerphone during that trip which I am wondering caused interference with the GPS...

Extemly usefull app, but unfortunately also extremely unstable. Crashes all the time and after a while it can' t be restarted. Re- installed it twice now ( on a Motorola ATRIX) and it isn' working.

Just changed my phone to HTC one. This app was superb on my old phone but not so good on my new one. Thought it was the phone but after downloading a new app, found out it was my tracks . Shame. I really liked this one

Ok, this is a bit of a mystery to me, but why in the world would you not have it so that we can share/upload our 'tracks' to our Google+ accounts? Or, have you made this feature so tricky to find that it's just not very intuitive?

I have same request as @ndrio's. Enable MyTrack to access cached maps on the phone in GoogleMap app. Also will be useful to enable default setting to post to google map account in private mode.

Love the app, great for recording cycling training rides. GPS barely uses battery when in airplane mode surprisingly. hangs or crashes occasionally. Also would like to see a pause functionality or resume track. Also a button to start recording in ten seconds or something (I know it gives you moving and stationary time)

A great app but battery killer. 100 to 16% battery in 4 hours of recording. A major bug is that in widget mode speed over 50 is shown intermittently.

It does exactly what I need; maps, mile markers, times per mile, saves each track, averages. Many other similar apps have so much unnecessary stuff... Not sure about the accuracy of distance. Elevation is way off.

This is a great app! I expected to have to try a few of the 'log my run' apps out there, but this blew me away on first use, and I can't think of anything else I'd want. So simple - just pick km or miles the first time you load it - and then hit "start recording" when you're ready to run, and "stop recording" when you're done. The voice telling you you're pace every 1km is a great bonus, as the screen on my phone is tricky to read whilst moving in sunlight. Finally, the upload of the data to a google spreadsheet and maps worked flawlessly.

This app is amazing records your info truly amazing. I was using it on my back pack while i was biking, recorded my info. When I got home imported my file to Google earth, it shows the path I went altitude, speed etc. Love it.

Like being able to share tracks using google maps. Elevation data is totally inaccurate, so wish that was better. Elevation data and general GPS is better on MapMyRide, but can't use google maps with that app...

I love this app. It helps me keep track of my riding, and is pretty accurate on distance. One glaring flaw though. VERY inaccurate on elevation. I live smack in the middle of Illinois flatlands, where the vertical elevation gain is no more than 15-20 feet, yet this keeps telling me that the gain is around 100 feet. Impossible! Please fix this (and make the interface a little more intuitive.)

I use it during my hikes and it works perfectly. The only minor issue is the distance which seems to be inaccurate. The distance calculated by others for the same gpx file is slightly smaller from what my tracks calculates. This is the only small negative thing I have to report, the app is very useful and simply great!

Incredibly simple compared to other similar apps. Works great for my purpose, recording backpacking trips. I navigate by compass just use this to record routes and mark areas of interest like nice campsites for the next trip. App easily uploads trips to Google Maps for viewing and sharing.

Pros: Powerful, lots of stats, send to Google Maps. Has been fairly reliable, on one occassion dropped out huge parts of my ride despite clear a sky view and full charge. The map ended up being useless with huge missing chunks, but this was an exception. Cons: The language and overall user experience is rough in this app, it could use a lot of improvement on the sharing FROM this app TO other places. Getting an email to yourself of the map links takes too many steps, language is weird like "Send to Google". Have the authors of the app ever tried to share a map of a bike ride to Google+ ? It doesn't put a thumbnail of the map, or an interesting icons, it lets you select from a strange icon file. People who made this app, please improve WHAT shows up on the network or phase you share it. Social sharing seems barely enabled, not optimized. Also UI does not conform to other Android design patterns, it's an oddball interaction paradigm. Basically needs an UI and usability overhaul. Summary: Good for a free app with geeky stats features, needs an update

Could be a little more accurate. I go on the same route and it can vary by more than I would like. The most recent update shows the distances in feet rather than miles for distances less than 2.5 miles. I use it for walking and over half of my routes are around two miles.

Excellent app. Few problems with GPS precision. Wish app would attempt inference when signal is lost and later picked back up. Or user manual manipulation. Also would be nice to have more robust regular web app to accompany. All in all I've been very satisfied.

The accuracy is not what it was 1 or 2 updates ago.. Also the max speed is way different than what the graph is showing. Its worthless if it is not accurate.

I ran with Mytracks running on my Android and the Runkeeper app on my iPhone. MyKeeper said I ran 6.48 miles and Runkeeper said I ran 2.73 miles. I later drove the route and my car showed the length to be 2.73 miles. The reason I tested it is because Mytracks seemed to be showing inflated figures. I think I will use Runkeeper from now on and delete Mytracks from my phone.

Its a very detailed app and tracks progress very well. The phone has to have a clear view of the sky to accurately track your position. My only complaint is that there needs to be an option to keep the back light so I can see my current speed, elevation, ect. for biking.

This is phenomenal! I do a lot of hiking in the Western Rockies, preparing for a summer of summiting 14ers, and this app let's me track where I've been and stats about that hike. That being said, here are some additions I would love to see: -ability to add photos to a waypoint marker, -option to overlap multiple/display several maps at once on the screen -on the map display while recording a track, show speed, total distance covered thus far, and direction of travel. Thanks for making such a cool app!

I've had this phone and this app for a few weeks. First week, it worked awesome. But then it did an update and now it can't keep the gps lock. It finds my location but loses it after .2 miles when riding. Mapmyrides works but doesn't have the features I really liked with mytracks. Any suggestions? The phone is brand new, never been dropped,etc.

1. In case a track is sent to Google Maps it loses its timing information! You need to export the track as a GPX file to keep the timing information. Export track to Google Maps is useless for me! 2. If I play a track in Google Earth on my mobile, I can't change the zoom and speed! Please Google make an effort to improve these points!

The Program is very helpful however there seems to be some inconsistencies between Max speed and the maximum speeds shown on the graph. On the graph the blue numbers show that I did not exceed 20 mph during my entire biking trip yet in the statistics overview page it says my my max speed was 27mph. I don't know which is right. In subsequent trips I have noticed that the max speed always has this inconsistency. It is not just my HTC Sensation 4G, since a coworker checked his tracks and found the same apparent inconsistency. If this problem is fixed I will give the program 5 stars easy!

I had this app on the HTC thunderbolt worth verizon service and it was spot on. Now I have the samsung Admire with Metro PCS and it adds about a half mile more that actual distance. This coils be the service though. The jury is out, but on the thunderbolt...superb!

Just went on a walk with the kids. Left the phone in the stroller's cup holder in full view of the sky. According to this app, we walked 8 miles at an average speed of 10 mph. Reviewing the track, it looks like a child drew the route, with scribbles all over the road. This program should recognize when a person is walking down a road and adjust the readings, but it doesn't. It takes every junk data point and adds it to the final tally, rendering the data useless. Google once again allows me to track personal stats and data to analyze in order to train more effective.
The mapping in Google tracks seems the most accurate of the trackers I have tried (Tracks, Endomondo, and TrackMyRide) and it has a nice net altitude gain calculator time and mileage seem accurate so I assume the altitude and calories are too. Over all VERY easy to use intuitive. I have not found any Google web site to use to track the rides or exercise performance or regularity. I have also not found a way to pause the tracking feature for coffee and potty breaks. Another small gripe is that the mapping in Google maps app shows bike routes and paths but Google tracks does not, seems like an obvious feature and would be hugely handy to have all in one. Google is gathering allot of bike information as the maps with bike lanes and routes that are pretty good, why not let us see the maps in the app and give us a way to look for and downloaded bike rides to our phone in the tracking app for when we are traveling out of town or in a new area? GREAT app!!

A bit tempramental. Works fine sometimes, today I walked from The Cotswolds to Africa! Obviously I didn't. Elevations mad... Stratospheric! And the track looked like mad scribble. A pause function during recording would be good. Ate up loads of battery power, phone wanted charging after 2 hours. Started out on full. *edit* not working at Gall now. A simple walk round town became scribble, very disappointing. Greedy on battery and no real record of 'my tracks' Better GPS positioning required I think. :-(

I installed this app, as well as a few others, and went running several times using simultaneously all of them. On my Motorola Atrix 2 they all worked well, tracking and showing all info related to the workout and the route. They all connect with a website on the internet where you can share your routes with others. The apps that I tried are: “Endomondo” (the free version), Google’s “My Tracks” (free!), “MapMyRun”, “RunKeeper”. I believe the choice it comes down to personal taste and preference related to the graphical interface, as all do quite a nice job. Maybe it’s just something peculiar to Atrix 2, but MapMyRun showed semnificatively higher battery usage. I used the apps with and without data enabled. They track in both cases, but you won’t be able to see the map without a data connection. In the future, I think I will keep using Endomondo and My Tracks at once, for comparison and double checking.

I use this app whenever I take a new route on my bicycle or Jeep. I can analyze how efficient a route is by looking at the elevation, total moving vs total time, average speed, etc. Then I can look at the map to visualize the route and see how accurate the GPS was. This is an amazing app.

I use this all the time. For some reason, it does not use the precached maps (from Google Maps app). Distances aren't accurate, as the GPS signal zigzags a bit. Would be nice if it could use the gps "accuracy" information to smooth the path, and get a more accurate distance.

Before I use the app I saved a part of the map (16km) using the option for offline maps in the google labs. Although I could see the saved map in "Google Maps" app, I didn't have it inside the "My Tracks" app. Therefore in order to have a map during your ride, you have to be online (3G or WiFi). Of course when you connect back to internet then you have your ride on the newly downloaded map. It would be really nice to use the cache of the maps so that there is also offline functionality. 4 stars at the moment but definitely a 5 star if you add offline support.

For some reason,tracks get sent in (sometimes) many sections. I'm sure this is caused by periods of poor or no satellite reception but it does make it difficult to use the uploaded tracks as the sections can't be joined up.

I use My Tracks (v1.1.15 on HTC MyTouch) daily on bicycle rides. I track my distance and time to make sure I am getting the necessary exercise every day. The program has all (or nearly all) of the features I could ask for from a free App - mapping, chart of speed and elevation, etc. One glitch (which appears to be common to other GPS) is that if you begin moving before the initial position fix is complete, it can take a long time to start tracking - sometimes 5 minutes or more. I gave My Tracks five stars for its usefulness and functionality as free software. I suspect that My Tracks might have caused my phone to reset at least once (it was the only app running at the time) but I am not certain enough to downgrade my rating.

The app does consume a lot of battery power on the Samsung S2 T989 running on the recommended settings. This drain seems to continue at a decreased, but still objectionable, rate after you disable tracking and exit the app. Rebooting is necessary to stop this on a non-rooted phone. Other than this, it is bulletproof, simple controls and a pleasure to use.

I used this app on my first run for a long time. My phone is the HTC Sensation XE , picking up the GPS signal was faultless and it accurately plotted my entire route and times. Never knew I was so unfit!!, Once I rid myself of these spare tyres around my waist , my times will reduce dramatically. Thoroughly recommend, although you must be aware of how good your phones GPS ability is .

Always loved this app today used it for 1st time since last update. For 2 hours it said no gps signal and wouldn't display a map, then when I quit I saved the route anyway and then when I loaded it, it had been accurately recording the whole time! Hmm. Also apparently I cycled at 134mph at one point. Something has gone wrong in this update.

The interface google maps is great, and the lateral tracking is dead on, but anything doing with verticle (altitude) is screwy. Started and ended at the same place and had an altitude gain. Also, I'd have to live in the Andes to have the altitude change per mile it shows.

I use this for biking and it's excellent. However I have 2 issues. Recently I can't upload to Google Docs, very annoying. And second if I export tracks and then import the statistics later they are not the same however only marginally different. For example, road bike reported 27.43 miles before export and after the import it reports on 27.0 miles. Max speed of 27.4mph before export, after import only reports 22.4 mph. Super weird.

I use this app daily when I run and I love it. There are a few things that I think would make it better though: 1.) Give us the ability to display a single statistic in the status bar. That way we don't have to unlock the phone to view our pace, times, etc. 2.) Allow us to disable the automatic screen orientation. 3.) This is less important but could still be useful. The ability to pause a recording.

Installed it on HTC Desire no problems, very easy to use. Will be on a 200 mile cycle ride soon so will see how it performs and the battery life of the HTC. What would be great is to have the ability to create route in google maps then send it to your phone, then track your course. Also, the data table needs to have the ability to move and re-size when overlay'd in google maps.

I use this app daily when I run and I love it. There are a few things that I think would make it better though: 1.) Give us the ability to display a single statistic in the status bar. That way we don't have to unlock the phone to view our pace, times, etc. 2.) Allow us to disable the automatic screen orientation. 3.) This is less important but could still be useful. The ability to pause a recording.

Installed it on HTC Desire no problems, very easy to use. Will be on a 200 mile cycle ride soon so will see how it performs and the battery life of the HTC. What would be great is to have the ability to create route in google maps then send it to your phone, then track your course. Also, the data table needs to have the ability to move and re-size when overlay'd in google maps.

Too many bugs, missing obvious features. First off, the app doesn't auto-center itself. So, if you travel outside of the area you start the app in, you have to manually move the screen to see where you are. Second, the red track-line doesn't draw itself in realtime. It only updates once you stop recording. Then, once you stop recording, you cannot resume where you left off. You can only start a new route (needs a resume option). Also, BIG problem is that there is no option to shut off the screen timeout.

The ability to track someone else’s progress (a live friends type feature with connection to a pc possible). We go on long runs in a rural area and it would be a nice feature. Looked good at first, but can't be trusted Apparently, yesterday I cycled for 188,600 miles, at a speed of 7,941 mph. "No GPS location provider..." message is incorrect and gets in the way. Can't Send to Google - just sits on "Authenticating to Google Maps...". A few bugs very serious which ruin an otherwise excellent app.

Great in the city, wouldn't record in the country I love this app for tracking my walks and bike rides. I've found it very accurate in the city, but not so usable outside of the city. In the app it says it locates your phone using cell towers and wi-fi signal, maybe that's why it didn't work for me in the country? At any rate, for me it does everything I want and more. Love the way I can upload to Google Maps. This is way better than my bike computer.

Great on doing its job. Just wish it would export more detailed data to Google docs (like the speed graph in the app.). -Edit- you can export in gpx!

To any of you looking for a more detailed upload. simple click the end of your trip. It gives all details, including elevation and speed graphs.

This POS works 50% of the time No rhythm or reason. GPS Test shows plenty of signals but this app routinely FAILS to record data! Makes me mad!
