Kindle for Android updated with Send-to-Kindle and support for Kindle Format 8
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Fri, 23 Mar 2012 08:59:09 UTC +00:00
Amazon is eager as ever to keep its Kindle apps up to date. Their latest endeavor includes releasing a new version of the Android client, which can now read Kindle Format 8 files. Moreover, Kindle users can now access a larger assortment of illustrated children’s books, comic books and graphic novels. In fact, there are more than 1000 children’s titles to choose from, including Brown Bear and Curious George, as well as popular comics such as Batman and Superman. Plus, there’s also richer formatting in thousands of other Kindle titles. The other new feature of Kindle for Android is support for Send-to-Kindle, allowing you to access documents you’ve sent via email to your Kindle reader, whether it’s an Amazon-made device or just an app for a smartphone or tablet. Needless to say, all documents sent this way are stored in the Amazon Cloud so you can access them whenever needed. Kindle Read More

Kindle for Android updated with page numbers, bug fixes
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Tue, 14 Feb 2012 08:29:04 UTC +00:00
Amazon has once again updated its Kindle app for Android with few tweaks here and there, as well as some bug fixes under the hood. Version 3.4.0 is smaller to download, while also including page numbers. As a result, you’ll be able to track your reading progress using numbers that match the real book. Not sure why it took so long to implement this seemingly simple and must-have feature, but the good thing is that it’s now live. So what are you waiting for? Simply tap the Android Market icon, and update your Kindle app from there. Or if for some reason you don’t have it installed on your Android smartphone or tablet, hit the link below and take it from there. Kindle for Android updated with support for PDF documents, ICS phones
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Sat, 10 Dec 2011 11:18:40 UTC +00:00
Amazon has recently updated its Kindle app for Android with few important features. Perhaps most notably is the support for PDF documents, allowing users to have a single app for all their reading needs. But wait – it’s not that cool actually. You see, when you read PDF file in the Kindle app, you can’t use bookmarks, highlitghts or make notes like you would in ebooks bought from Amazon. We hope that will change (improve) in the future releases and in the meantime there are other dedicated PDF readers you could use (like ezPDF for instance). In addition, Kindle’s Android client now supports Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones, which at this moment means only Galaxy Nexus. Plus, there’s a new option to control margins and line spacing when reading a book on your smartphone. Finally, several bugs have been fixed to make the app even more stable… Kindle remains the Read More
Kindle For Android v3.3 Now Supports PDF Documents And ICS Devices
Amazon's recent update to its Kindle for Android app brings an important change by allowing native support for reading PDF documents. Unfortunately, PDF support, as it currently stands, is fairly barebones. Aside from being able to view PDF documents, zoom, and turn pages, the app does not have any other features. Indeed, unlike ordinary ebooks, the PDF portion of the app does not support bookmarks, highlights or the ability to make notes. The 3.3 update ties in nicely with yesterday's announcement from PDF software maker Foxit that Amazon had made an investment in the company. Although Kindle devices natively supported PDF documents since 2009, reading them has always been a little cumbersome. Hopefully, Amazon's investment is an indicator that better support is on its way. The update also brings support for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) devices and customization options, including new margin and line spacing control.    Head on over Read More

And for those of you going ‘We no speak Americano’, the app can handle French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian apart from English. Another one of the great things about Android (if you’re a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system, which is mostly just interesting, but can be handy once in a while. There are a number of really good speed test apps, but my favorite is the Speedtest.net app. It’s generally consistent and it has some of the best graphics and options. The Android Kindle app has just been given a massive redesign by Amazon, introducing a much-needed new visual style to the app’s menu system. Amazon has gone for a rather bland grey tabbed layout, which fronts a complete new main menu screen that now includes a selection of “Editor’s Picks” along the bottom. Here it is. The one on the left is the new layout. Those screen shots are Amazon’s, taken from the Kindle Android Market listing. Please don’t assume that Dan Brown novels take up any space on my phone. Worth Reading? -1 [1 votes] The fine folks at Nielsen over at Nielsen Wire have done some calculating and have found a couple of interesting statistics. First, and perhaps most obviously, from what Nielsen Smartphone Analytics have come up with after metering thousands of Android smartphones, the average Android smartphone user spends 67% of their on-device time, or 56 minutes per day, on apps, while 33% of their smartphone time is spent on the mobile web. This is of course an average person who only spends about an hour and a half on their device a day, a figure I’m sure all of you trump before breakfast is over. Then comes the information on the apps. What’s interesting here is that the top 10 apps in the Android Market do really appear to hold sway over the device market with a steel grip. HP's earnings were brutal this past quarter, sure. In response, new CEO Meg Whitman's clarion call to investors, repeated over and over again? We need to be more clear. We need to let you know what's going on. Just not... right... now. For all of Whitman's posturing about the need to tell us what's in store for HP, she glossed right over the company's biggest question mark: the fate of webOS. Honestly, at this point? Amazon to develop Kindle for Android App - Phone Beta
Amazon to develop Kindle for Android App It is reported in New York Times that Amazon has recently disseminated some new information of employment that they are looking for Android software and hardware designers. And these persons are to work for Lab 126, which is the department responsible for developing Kindle. Lab 126 has added more than 5 positions relevant to the development of Android, which shows that Amazon is to develop other products of Android. And this will form the base of Kindle for Android, since Amazon adopts Linux in Kindle. Such information aroused debates. Some people consider that that Amazon seems to offer a new Kindle for Android between tablet device and readers to fight against Nook Color. But some others believe it’s just because Amazon needs people to optimize its reading software. As a budget-priced light reader, Kindle sells very well. But with iPad 2 and some other Read More

Worth Reading? +5 [5 votes] There’s talk going around that Amazon may be looking to take completely redesign the Kindle platform and base it on the Android OS. According to posts in the New York Times Blog, Amazon is looking for Android developers for “Lab 126″ which is Amazon’s Kindle development unit. That would make for a very interesting development and may signal Amazon’s concern that the NOOKColor is suddenly very popular with Android geeks looking for an affordable tablet option. There’s also the fact that with Amazon’s Android App Store that the book seller may simply be looking to evolve the Kindle to take advantage of Android apps they sell. There’s some positive and negative aspects to this possibility. First off, the hallmark of the Kindle itself is that it has amazing battery life due to it’s passive liquid crystal display that doesn’t rewrite the page until it’s “turned.” This Read More

Finding stellar Android apps isn't the easiest task, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. Here's the cream of the crop. Twitter: The official Twitter app is good enough for almost everyone. Along with giving you a clean, easy way to keep track of your timeline and updating your status, Twitter for Android also has a snazzy swipe down to refresh feature. Free. Facebook: Facebook is finally decent on Android and now actually brings some unique features, namely the front page side-scroll of friend's recent photos and a pull up notification window. Free. Google+: It's Google's big soiree into social "sharing". The app has it all: a stream that shows what your friends are talking about (like Facebook), Huddle which is an easy to set up group chats (like GroupMe) and will even automatically upload the pictures you take on your phone to the cloud (like iCloud). This is a coincidence. Only last night we were mundanely tweeting about how much we enjoy using the Android Kindle app, which, when combined with an out-of-copyright book database like Project Gutenberg, means access to a virtually unlimited collection of classic novels for free. Today, Amazon has announced a rather more up-to-date arrival – access to Android specific versions of newspapers and magazines via the Android Kindle app. At least, we think this is a new feature. Amazon emailed us about it this morning and we don’t remember seeing it before when trying to buy papers on Kindle – just a warning that newspapers weren’t available on the app versions of Kindle. The selection of newspapers and magazines available on Android Kindle at the moment isn’t great, mind. Created on: September 13, 2010 With the recent advent of electronic eBook Readers flooding the market, electronic eBooks have gained popularity like never before. The Amazon Kindle was responsible for sparking this fledging market, and since the kindles release there have been many competing eBook readers released. One of the drawbacks to the Amazon Kindle was originally the high retail price, so naturally it was profitable for Amazon to design a digital application as well. The first digital application for the PC was a welcome addition, especially if you tend to order a lot of books from Amazon, but don’t have the resources to purchase a kindle. With the release of the Android as an operating system it was only a matter of time until it became the next portable eBook reader to grace the market. The kindle software for the Android will immediately look familiar to anyone who has experience Read More

Created on: September 12, 2010   Last Updated: March 25, 2011 Amazon Kindle is the name given to the hardware and software platform developed by Amazon.com which allows the rendering of ebooks and other digital media.  The most common way to read this literature is via a dedicated Kindle reader which supports WiFi and 3G connections for downloading books onto the device.  These devices are excellent but do come at a price so it would be nice if there was a cheaper alternative out there.  The cheaper alternative actually turns out to be a free alternative if you own an Android powered smartphone.  Kindle for Android is a free app which you can download from the Android market which turns your phone into a fully functional Kindle reader. Kindle for Android requires 3.5Mb of space on your phone and cannot be installed to your SD card if you are a Froyo user.  Read More

The Android Market isn't always an easy place to get around. Our first edition of the Lifehacker Pack for Android rounds up essential Android apps—our personal favorites for productivity, multimedia, internet life, and just plain usefulness. Lots of people are picking up new Android phones these days—nearly 200,000 per day, at last count. Google's default apps are pretty handy, but the Market has many great apps, most of them free. Here's a look at our favorite free and cheap Android apps. We're using the great app search and sync service AppBrain to create a Lifehacker Pack for Android. If you install the AppBrain App Market on your Android phone and sign in through the AppBrain site (using a Google OAuth, no-password-revealed log-in), you can check off and click install multiple apps from the list, or visit the individual [AppBrain] link at the end of each app write-up to find out more Read More
Kindle and Nook Android Apps: A Hands-On Look - PCWorld

It's official: Barnes & Noble has launched its Nook for Android app. But how does the bookseller's new e-reader for smartphones stack up against Amazon's Kindle for Android? Here's a quick comparison. Both apps are free downloads at the Android Market. During setup you'll have to register with either Amazon or Barnes & Noble before using that vendor's app. The programs sport a similar look. An opening screen lists the e-books in your library and provides access to a Web store where you can order (or sample) more titles. To access the Nook bookstore, for instance, you touch 'shop books' in the upper-right corner. Once you've downloaded an e-book, the title appears in your library. Whether you're using the Kindle app or the Nook app, reading is intuitive. To turn a book's "pages," for instance, you simply flick the screen with your finger, or tap either side of the display. by Don Reisinger Google Goggles, which is available for free in the Android Market, is a must-have for any Droid X owner. The service allows users to perform visual searches from their phones. So, rather than inputting text into a search field, Goggles asks users to take a picture of something they want to find. The app then analyzes the photo and delivers Google Search results based on that image. It works quite well in most cases, but it should be noted that it's still a work in progress. Startup Auditor could be one of the most useful applications for those folks who want the most control over their operating system. The app, which costs just $0.99, allows users to enable and disable other applications. It also determines which programs will start when the phone is booted. First look at Borders' e-book store and apps | ITworld
Mini_discussion_bubble ITworld | IT news, technology analysis and how-to resources - Posted Thu, 08 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
July 08, 2010, 8:06 AM — It was way back in December 2009 when Borders first announced that it was partnering with Kobo for its e-book store, and the service finally launched yesterday. Amazon has the Kindle, Barnes & Noble has the Nook, but Borders has opted to offer a range of dedicated e-readers. There's the Kobo eReader for $149, the Libre eBook Reader for a very affordable $119 (though do note it's an LCD display, not E Ink, and its available only for pre-order as of today), and the Sony Touch ($169) and Pocket ($149). The Kobo seems to be the 'flagship' model and Borders is throwing in a $20 Borders Gift card and "Double Borders Bucks" if you buy now. So for effectively $129 you get an E Ink e-reader, though you'll have to sync books onto it via a USB cable; there's no wireless connectivity. The Borders e-book Read More
App Smart - Suddenly, Mobile Music Services Are Everywhere - NYTimes.com

Music subscription services never quite struck gold with Internet users, but now that the smartphone is becoming the era’s standard listening device, a new gold rush is on. Established music services like Rhapsody, Pandora and Slacker continue to improve mobile service, but they are suddenly facing new mobile music competition. Depending on a person’s phone, budget and listening habits, the new services may be a better call. The services seem to be converging on the same target — namely, apps that let users hear personalized radio stations, build play lists and store songs for offline listening. No service has all of these features for all mobile platforms, but they are making progress. Rhapsody’s Premier service ($10 a month), for instance, is great for iPhone users, good for people with Android phones and useless on a BlackBerry until Rhapsody’s BlackBerry app arrives later this summer. Users can create play lists or listen Read More
Android App Review: Kindle For Android
The Good: Whispersync provides instant access to books previously downloaded to a user’s Amazon.com account, as well as synchronization of the last page read, bookmarks and other annotations; the price is right - free. The Bad: You probably wouldn’t want to read a whole book on your phone. The Verdict: Kindle for Android is the perfect supplement (a/k/a time-waster or boredom-filler) for those users with Kindles, or perhaps those who enjoy Amazon’s multi-platform support and synchronization (Kindle, Mac/PC, iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, Blackberry, Android). Kindle for Android joins a vast array of platforms supported by Amazon.com’s Kindle e-book service, including obviously the Kindle hardware, Mac and PC desktop software, the gambit of touch-sensitive Apple devices (i.e. iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad), and Blackberry.  Kindle’s Whispersync system keeps books downloaded to the user’s Amazon.com account (both purchased and free) synced across each of the supported platforms. Upon first use, the user needs to register the Read More
Can Borders Unseat Amazon in the E-Book Market?
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOM - Posted Wed, 07 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Borders today launched both an electronic book store and two handset clients — for BlackBerry and Android 2.0 devices — as it tries to compete against offerings from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple. According to Reuters, the new Borders eBook store boasts 1.5 million titles (both free and paid) and lags only behind Amazon in terms of volume. And similar to Amazon, Borders is embracing e-books as a platform across multiple devices, rather than taking Apple’s approach, which currently limits its e-books to iOS4 devices only. Will following in Amazon’s footsteps guarantee the same level of success for Borders, currently the number two brick-and-mortar bookseller in terms of overall sales? Om believes that it’s Amazon’s game to lose, mainly because the retailer understands online sales world like few others — customers trust Amazon and its one-click purchase method. Still, the company may not be the guaranteed winner in this market: Barnes & Noble Read More

Amazon Kindle for Android and other ebook readers - iPhone app article - Kristen Nicole | Appolicious ™ iPhone App Directory
The Kindle book reader has finally made its way to the Android Market, giving Amazon a nice bundle of mobile apps.  While iPhone users have had a number of high quality readers for their phones, Android users have been left with fewer selections. Here are some ebook readers Android users do have to choose from. Kindle with Whispersync offers mobile access to your Amazon account, Kindle books and recommendations.  The free app lets you purchase and read any Kindle book, also tying in with your Whispersync account. The app isn’t as robust as the iPhone version, but it does expand the ways in which you can access your Kindle content. Kobo is another Android newcomer.  It’s free app offers a searchable library of books to read on your phone. Flipping through digital book pages is easy, and custom settings make for more comfortable reading. The library here is still growing, though Read More

As far as features, if you are a Kindle user on any other platform you will already know what to expect. But for those new to the Kindle experience, you will be able to read ebooks as well as shop in the Kindle Store where you can purchase books and even get free sample of books. Additionally, the app will work in both portrait and landscape mode and page turning is done by either a tap or a flick of the screen. Other goodies include adjustable font size, the ability to add bookmarks and Whispersync. Of course, that last feature, Whispersync is going to be most useful to those also using another Kindle app or a hardware Kindle because it syncs your bookmarks and notes so Read More

The battle for the eBook / eReader market continues to heat up – Kindle for Android has come out of beta is now available in the Android Market (requires Android 1.6 or higher). On your phone, just go to the Android market and search for “Kindle” and read away! This is of course a real boon for Android tablets, as it puts what many people consider the best book reader onto the Google platform. How this will impact what Google does with it’s own eBook play, Google Editions which should be out this summer, we’ll have to see. At any rate, if you have one of those large 4.3″ screen Android phones right now, this is just about a must have app. Of course, for only $189 now, you can just go and buy the Kindle itself, but if you’re an Android fan (and are just waiting for a killer Android Read More

No Kindle? No problem. Amazon is quickly expanding the reach of its electronic books business by offering its Kindle application on PCs and mobile phones. On Monday the company took that approach further, announcing the release of a new Kindle reading application, called Kindle for Android, that is available as a free download for phones running Google’s Android software. As with other Kindle applications, users will be able to download books they have started reading on other devices directly to their mobile phones and save their place across other devices using Amazon’s Whispersync system. This new announcement puts Amazon farther ahead of its competitors in offering a read-everywhere experience. Amazon's Kindle App for Android Comes at Crucial Time - PCWorld

Android phone owners are no longer left out of Amazon's e-book party, thanks to the Kindle app that landed in the Android Market late Monday. Kindle for Android offers many, but not all, of the features iPhone owners currently enjoy, including automatic synchronization between devices, adjustable text size, annotations, bookmarks and portrait or landscape modes. Missing from Android's Kindle app are text search and in-app book purchases, but Amazon told InformationWeek both features are on the way. There's no word on whether the app will get audio and video support, both recently added to iOS devices. It's too bad Android users had to wait this long, but now is an important time for Amazon to add support for Google's mobile platform. Android phones are selling well, with record sales for Sprint's HTC Evo 4G, long waits to get a Droid Incredible and a first quarter in which Android phones outsold Apple's Read More

The Kindle for Android app is now in the Android Market, providing access to 620,000 e-books. However, those who already have a Kindle account and an Android 1.6 or higher device can log-in to read their treasured works. We got a quick preview of the Amazon app while at Google I/O and we were impressed (video demo is below). With Kindle for Android, Amazon’s Winning Strategy Is Complete

Amazon has released Kindle for Android, which provides access to the more than 620,000 titles in the Kindle bookstore. Like the Kindle software for other platforms, the Android version supports Amazon’s WhisperSync feature, which allows users to read on one device and later pick up where they left off on another. The application also adds local bookmarking, reading of notes, text sizes, background colors and brightness. Books cannot be purchased in the application, but tapping the Kindle Store option opens a web page to Amazon’s Kindle bookstore. Loading Picture 1 of 7 I’d call the Kindle for Android software welcome and usable, but not a fully featured solution. Although displays are typically small on Android phones, some folks will want the ability to highlight text or create in-book notations, and those features are missing. Android gets Kindle App; Analyst downgrades Amazon | ZDNet
Summary: Amazon release a Kindle App for Android. Meanwhile, a Wall Street analyst downgrades Amazon over concerns about Kindle. Amazon said today that its has released its free Kindle reading app for Android-powered devices, furthering opening the Kindle platform to other platforms but also raising some concerns about the long-term survival of the Amazon’s Kindle e-reader. The app, available for download in the Android Marketplace, is the latest to hit mobile devices, with Kindle apps already available for BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as Windows and Mac computers. The Android app includes Amazon’s Whispersync technology, which saves and syncs books and bookmarks across the various devices. For now, the Kindle app is just a reader but additional features - including full text search and the ability to purchase Kindle books from within the app - will be added soon. Kindle can read MOBI files if you put them into the kindle folder. I love reading on my Android more so than my Kindle device because the letters are so crisp, I can invert the colours and read at night, and I can wrap my hand around my Android and read wonderfully. I LOVE KINDLE SO MUCH!!

My notes and bookmarks are missing. This has happened several times, possibly after downloading new books. What's happening? My notes, highlights, and bookmarks add personal value to my books greater than the original purchase price. I've put valuable time and energy into them and cannot continue to use Kindle if they get periodically "vaporized." Also, word spacing if occasionally off, i.e. some words have extra spaces within the word. Example: occasio nally.

Every time u download a book you are putting people out of work. It is because of lazy people that our book stores are closing. What about those peoples families? Are y'all to lazy to pick up a book to read or is it your to lazy to leave your couch.. Come on people think about your small business owners. If you put them out of business what are you saying about yourself. Your saying I do not care for our economy or anything else for that matter.

Kindle app for Android has issues sync'ing between devices. I purchased an actual Kindle device early last year, and I bounce between my Kindle Keyboard, and my Kindle for Android. About a month ago or so, I noticed that when I would read from my Kindle for Android app, the furthest page information was not being sent out and would not sync to my other devices. I contacted Amazon Kindle support, and they confirmed that is currently an issue and will be resolved in a future update. To workaround this issue, you must perform a manual sync OUTSIDE of the book. Performing a manual sync inside the book is not sufficient. With the Kindle app open, but not inside a book, click on the "On Device" tab along the top. Not click your menu button, and you will have an option to sync from there. This will properly send out the furthest page read information and your other devices will then pick that up. Once this issue is resolved, I'll fix my rating.

Last update ruined it, it wasn't bad before that. I have a lot of personal stories and docs I convert to MOBI and have in my Kindle reader and it used to work fine but now everything shows up as unknown and i have to unauthorize my device and then reauthorize it to get them to show up properly. It would also be nice if you could give the Kindle the ability to read subfolders within the Kindle directory so that those of us with a lot of books and documents and who like to keep things organized can organize them how we want on our device.

I'm using a Droid X2 and kindle is locking on the splash screen nearly every timei try to launch the app. I know the recent update was supposed to fix this, but i'm still having trouble and can really only make the app work after a battery-pop restart...and only if kindle is the first app I run. An adequate book reader that does the basics very well. However, it doesn't have the ability for the user to place books into user collections / groupings, nor search by category or tag. As a book collection grows, this missing functionality (which is available on other book reader apps) becomes more important! Add the missing functionality and I'll increase my rating.

Fantastic app great development, easy to use and astounding volume of titles available. I read at night on my phone, and the white on black view option with the screen dimmed appropriately is good. Could I plea for an addition in view option to disable the soft key lights? That would be fantastic as this app turns them back on from being off. Thanks.

I love the flexibility of being able to read the same book on multiple devises. The only problem with this app is that when you're looking at archived items it doesn't give you the option to see the most recent purchases. This is very important for me because I have over 200 books already. Its hard to remember unless I'm by a computer and can log into my Amazon account to check. Otherwise great app!

Read the entire Twilight saga on my Droid X. It had only taken me two weeks on my phone, one year ago. They do have some tech books, but I wish they had reduced e-books for college! If they did that, it would be awesome... going to class without 50lbs. of dead weight!

This app actually seems to be better on my phone than my tablet. On the tablet, the line spacing and margins are far too large, at least on this device. These values can't be customized, even though can be on the Kindle Fire's equivalent app, and I *thought* they could in an earlier version of this. Edit: +1 star as margins and line spacing are tighter now, making this much more useable. However, you still can't customize them. You can do so on the phone version, and on the Fire. Why the discrepancy?

There was a book I was looking for in my local bookstores and both of them said they had to order it and it would take a week. I got my new LG Thrill phone and saw the Kindle reader I download it and did a search for the book. The book was available so I downloaded the book within seconds...I didn't have to wait for it to come in the mail...so far so good and very cool! I now don't have to carry a book around cause its on my phone...

Love having this app, I actually don't own a kindle I downloaded this on my phone and iPod touch after I waited too late to purchase a book for a class. I love this app but when I had my blackberry I was able to see what books other customers had bought, and on the Android i'm not able to do that. So once i've finished a book I absolutely loved I can't go about and find a book just as good so easily, by setting what else people have bought, and I would find so many books that way, if they could add that function to the Android version of the kindle then it would definitely be a 5 star app

Wow!! Finally my eijiro is back!! I love this v3.5.1!!!! -- I love this app. But v3.4.2.4 crashes every time I launch the app, if I put my EJ132 mobi in the book folder. Actually I have a Kindle keyboard but I 'd like to use this app occationally. I should not have updated the app because it could run with the mobi before. It's enough for me that Amazon simply provides older versions officially. I know I can find some old ones unofficially but it is too dangerous to install such things.

The new update is terrible. I continually get force close messages. It sometimes takes three to five minutes before a book opens. Before the update, this application was great. Now it stinks. It also affects Gmail, music, etc. and slows them down and creates force close issues. A Verizon rep says the app is making my phone freak. I want to give this zero stars, but am forced by Google to give it one undeserved star. The whole experience is making me consider getting an iPhone.

I have experienced no ill effects after the latest update. It works great on my Rezound. It would be cool if I could listen to the music I downloaded to my Kindle on this app, but it's still 5*'s. Kindle for android was one of the first apps I installed on my Samsung Galaxy I. Worked like a dream and my intake of books went up - been reading two novels a week and catching up on all the stuff I should have read before. Then... with recent updates, things slowed, and slowed and s l o w e d , began to freeze more and more, and now with the latest update it freezes/jams/dies most of the time. Get the opening splash screen.. then nothing. Sometime screen goes black and then it grunts at me (vibrates a bit). I've done all the usual things - removed pretty well all 3rd party apps and anything I don't need, battery out and in again (many times). Eventually (after a few re-boots and multi-minute hangs) it does usually work. Not sure whether it is Kindle, Android or Samsung... but I am so very disappointed... Dare not rely on it on flights or other journeys - so might have to go back to paper... great shame. Can't believe I'm the only one with the problem - but can't find any advice on the web... If the next update makes things work as well as the original Kindle for Android, I'll post 5 stars instantly!

This is the first time Amazon has released a flawed version of the Kindle app for Android. There is a major programming flaw--the app installed isn't as large as it should be; it's only 2MB. The app can't open. It only stalls and eventually force closes or crashes my tablet. Amazon, please remove this version and restore the previous one. You clearly have more programming to do on this seriously flawed update.

The app itself works perfectly fine on my LG Slate. However after the update somehow, someone thought it was a brillant idea to squeeze more words per page and I understad that some people prefer it that way. I actually preferred the Kindle over Google Play Books before the update. But now with the tight leading between each lines, horrible kerning, and rivers flowing through the pages it makes the text unreadable and I'm in my 20s. Changing the size of the text does not help and in some cases makes the problem a lot worse. There should be an option to adjust the leading manually like Google Play Books or leave it the way it was. I'm sad to say this but I'll be reading from Google Play Books till the leading and kerning issues are fixed. Please fix.

I respectfully request this publisher to initiate ota updates on all Carrier UI's/OS's (especially in un-subsidized phones) as an option to remove/recall marketing bloatware. I paid over $600 for this Droid, and have spent hundreds on apps of my choice, and if any of the mitigated Corporate entities involved in this travesty, had any respect what-so-ever for true economic freedom, I would have the option to remove this App. I give this application one star for its part in the shaming of America.

When I first downloaded this app, it worked great. Then I upgraded to version 3.5 (and later 3.5.1) and everything has slowed to a halt. Loading the app takes at least a minute now, and sometimes it freezes the whole phone. I have even gotten the "no longer responding" message on a simple page turn, even after the app is loading and I've been reading for a while. I've used the Kindle app regularly for months but the last update takes forever to load and stalls while reading. Please fix!
swiitpea 3.0 stars
Taking waaay too long to fix errors from last 2 updates so I've switched to the Nook application for now. Say goodbye to all the money I usually spend on Kindle books. You really dropped the ball on this one. Obviously, you didn't test it enough before releasing the updates. Your loss - B&N's gain. Better luck next time. Hope you've learned something significant from this mismanaged situation. I certainly have.
Ed 1.0 stars
slow. every release is slower than the one before. no other app gets the "not responding" pop up like the kindle app. so slow.
Jeffrey 5.0 stars
I use this app on my HTC EVO 4G & HTC EVO View tablet with no issues. I get books from my local library & prefer to use this app instead of Overdrive. To the person complaining about the app, this app is available for free. If it's included on the phone, it's because the carrier made a deal to featured it on your device. Your beef is with the phone company. The app didn't 'force' itself on you or your phone.
Brian 3.0 stars
I've been using the Kindle app since I bought my first Droid phone (droid 2). Up until the last 2 updates the app worked flawlessly. It doesn't sync with my other devices, even doing a manual sync.

This update has ruined what was a gr8 app. Now force closes all the time. Reinstate last version please! SGS2
Neelan 4.0 stars
Actually, Brutuz, Amazon is equally to blame because they obviously pay the carrier a portion of the sales or something. So you're the idiot here and Vertigo is right. It's bloatware from the carrier and kindle in unison. Takes two to tango.

I downloaded kindle for my computer and then for my galaxy player 5.0. The kindle syncs them both up very well. Only problem i have is when i don't back out of kindle completely on my player, it loses my page ang goes back to a past bookmark. This could be a pain when you can't recall your last page read.

I think this would be a great app if it didn't require so much horsepower. I am running on a Motorola Milestone, Froyo 2.2 and when I launch the app, I get a black screen for minutes. When it does end up loading, things are pretty sluggish.

however launching a browser, then having to login, and navigate to search for content is not ideal. I would much prefer this to be in-app. Some books look terrible because they have images (vital ones too) that were at digitized far too low a resolution.

I easily preferred having a "recommended for me" list on the bottom of the home screen rather than the best sellers. Everybody knows all the hunger game books are the best sellers - I don't need it wasting up precious space in the app.

I love kindle. I have 2 kindle devices and this app. It works great on my razr maxx, beautiful and easy to read. I agree that a lot of useless apps came on the phone that I'd like to delete but this isn't one.

Kindle has some good aspects like the bookmark you can create just by touching the top of the screen and the archive that stores books you've bought when they are not on your device. But other than that it doesn't offer anything the several other ebook readers would not offer. Indeed the vast number have the advantage over Kindle as it's prices are hardly competitive it's exceedingly slow upon starting and the bulk of it is locked in your internal memory. I'll still use it but only as a secondary reader

Awesome app, until recently. Last update, I began having difficulty with each time I open the app. It either takes 3-5 minutes to open or freezes my phone, rendering the entire phone useless, until I'm off the app.. Until then I would give it 5 stars and say it's my favorite app on my Droid. Please fix quickly! !!

I love this app' I first purchased it on my iPhone then my Samsung Galaxy S2, now on my tablet, I love it! I have all my Pratchett books on it! I can no longer hold a full size book, so having it on my mobile is fantastic! I love now whispersync syncs all of the books so it I read a bit on my phone I can then pick up where I left off on my laptop!
DoctorWu 3.0 stars
Its not a bad e-reader app but it is lacking where other readers such as the Nook app do quite well. Mainly in page formatting. I like have two page view but this app only offers a single page view. Also other than the size of the text there's no way to change the font. Also no way to adjust the background, justification, or the margins. It "gets the job done" as an ereader but very basic.
Clayton 2.0 stars
Was a great ap until lately when an update started causing problems. First fix did not fully take care of the locking up.
Robin 4.0 stars
I use both the Kindle and Nook apps. I'm really disappointed that the Kindle app doesn't have the book wish list feature that the Nook app has. However, to those who are complaining about the cost of books - that is not reviewing the app. So your reviews are useless. The app itself is fast (faster than the Nook app) and downloading a book from the shop is a breeze. It's also much easier to bookmark on this app than other reading apps I've used.
Tobi 1.0 stars

Tiny 4.0 stars
It's just like the kindle, but better. Very good when you can't fit your eReader in your bag! Only thing I can think of to improve it would be a screen dimmer. Sometimes the screen is too bright to read in the dark without making your eyes sting.

Nice reader with dictionary like the Kindle device. No text to speech, and no sharing of text from the book. Media that can be accessed by an Apple device is not available for Android Kindle - which feels weird since Amazon has Audible for Android.

I preferred the ability to have two "pages" on my screen in landscape mode on my tablet. Further, what is up with the 3/4" border around the text? Why can't this app use the whole screen in landscape mode? Finally, if you blank out the interface with a tap on the screen, why does the space where the interface would be still remain blank? Shouldn't the text reflow?

It's decent but not great. You're limited to three viewing options regarding font and background colours, I would love to be able to customise the font and background colours to something that's a bit easier on the eyes. There's also no way to organise your books into collections, which is not ideal if you have a lot of ebooks.

The new tighter spacing is an excellent improvement. But it needs to be user configurable! Specifically: font size, margins, line spacing, font typeface, and 2-columns for landscape. Let us drop any TTF file into the Kindle directory to use custom fonts.

I think this is the easiest to read from and most nicely presented and designed e-book reader on the market, followed fairly closely by Aldiko. Really impressed they can make a ebook look so nice on such a small screen and thankfully you have the option to turn the brightness down very low if you wish, which I appreciate. The sepia background is really easy on the eyes. I'm doing most of my reading on Kindle for android now.

While its a nice program for Kindle ebooks, I have to rate it only 2 stars when compared to the iPad version. Obviously Amazon really didn't give much effort or care to Android users when they made this app, and it seems like their feelings of this app is "Ok, here's something just to show I acknowledge your existence. Be happy I did that much." A shame since last I remember, there are almost twice as many Android devices to iOS devices so it isn't done because of market share.

Kindle for Android is definitely inferior to Nook for Android. No bookmarking, no saving of where you left off. REALLY annoying!
Anatoli Arkhipenko 4.0 stars
This is a very nicely done app. I do have one little problem with it: every time you touch the screen to turn a page, the soft buttons light up. Why? Not a big deal, but annoying. I use other reader apps and somehow this does not happen. Eats battery for nothing...

I like the Kindle app but it would be nice if it also accepted ePub files. It's obviously been written to work with the Amazon website, that's how they pay for it, but a paid for version that accept other ebook formats would be very welcome. One feature missing from the Android version is Collections which are available on version of Kindle for other platforms such as Windows.

All of the features of the actual reader I love. Its text rendering is sharp and beautiful and the options for searching and coloring are very good. The whole appearance is very polished. Good readability, Poor usability As far as reading quality, the app is pretty good. Margins and line spacing feel just right at all different font sizes. On the other hand, i find the UI unsatisfactory. Some things that really should be improved: allow to tag/organize books (tags?); Hyperlinks: when I follow an hyperlink and tap on "back" I should go back to the previous page/location, not to the book list; It should be possible to "highlight" and "annotate" text also across pages; several more things but I am running out of space.

Best way to read I've never been a reader. I hated reading in school because we were forced to read cap, so that turned me off. Since I night my tablet, I find it awesome to be able to read in bed with the lights off, and I finally enjoy reading. Having whisper sync to sync my book positions across my tablet and my phone is fantastic. I've tried the nook app and it doesn't hold up to this. This is truly the best way to read. To the reviews that say you can't uninstall and forces updates, that's all bull, works fine.
