Google Voice VM now part of Android’s phone app
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOm - Posted Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:57:36 UTC +00:00
Google Voice on Android 4.0 devices gained a new feature with a software update on Thursday, allowing users to listen to their Google voicemail directly in the native phone app. Voicemails will no longer be limited to the Google Voice app but instead will appear in the phone’s call log, just like standard carrier voicemails. From the Google Mobile Blog: Your voicemails will appear alongside your outgoing, incoming, and missed calls in your phone’s call log and you can just simply touch them to play them. You can slow down the playback of the message which is great for when someone is telling you their callback number, or you even speed playback up, so you can quickly listen to longer messages. Although Google Voice is supported on multiple mobile platforms, it’s unlikely — if not impossible — that this type of integration will appear on iOS, Windows Mobile, or BlackBerry handsets. Google Voice for Android now includes ICS Voicemail integration
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Thu, 22 Mar 2012 21:45:30 UTC +00:00
Google has updated Google Voice for Android with a kick-ass deep integration feature that puts the Android 4.0 dialer in use, allowing users to view and listen to their Google Voice voicemail in their standard call log. It’s the first implementation of visual voicemail we’ve seen that’s based on the ICS API. Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) owners can expect other cool features like an updated user interface that resembles the search giant’s ICS holo theme, with a new menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Google’s also included the ability to slow down or speed up message playback, which it says will be helpful for focusing on voicemail details or speeding through long messages. It’s simple to enable these new features, all users have to do is download the latest application and check “voicemail display” in Google Voice settings. Overall, Google has done a great job handling Google Voice, keeping it Read More
Google Voice for Android updated with ICS-style look and feel, asynchronous SMS sending
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Thu, 09 Feb 2012 10:08:08 UTC +00:00
Google Voice for Android got a small update and now the application looks like it’s tailor-made for the latest version of the platform – Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, it now comes with asynchronous SMS sending support (offline queuing), though when sending texts to multiple recipients, it will still work synchronously. Tablet users on their end will notice a few differences on the surface such as a Click-to-Call button added to the main interface and integration into the People/Contacts app… And that’s about it. Nothing major, though still worth installing… at least for the benefit of having your phone look like it’s running Android 4.0 apps. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what Read More

Google Voice Calls To The U.S. And Canada To Remain Free Until The End Of 2012
While the Google Voice app has always been free, there was speculation that voice calls to the United States and Canada would begin to cost you money at the beginning of next year. However, new Google Voice users are being greeted by a pop-up window when they first use the Call Phone feature in Gmail that indicates otherwise. See there? Calls to the U.S. and Canada are free in 2012. If there is anything I love more than free voice calling, it's another year of entirely free calling through Google Voice. And to think...several years ago people were feeding money to machines at gas stations just to make phone calls. If you don't already have Google Voice, pick it up below. Google Voice Read More
Google Voice app update; text to multiple recipients, pre-fetch voicemails | Android and Me
Mini_discussion_bubble Android and Me - Posted Thu, 17 Nov 2011 18:21:22 UTC +00:00
At last! Google listened to us and just updated the Google Voice app (version 0.4.2.38) with two of the best features we’ve seen in a while. One of them we’ve been requesting for a long time. Yes, my friends. We can finally send a text message to multiple recipients, simultaneously. Just keep adding those contacts to the recipient box, write your message, hit “send,” and you’re good to go. It’s that simple. To make things even better, Google has also added another feature with this update. Until now, it hasn’t been possible to listen to voicemails without an internet connection. It’s hard to find yourself without internet, but it happens. We can now ease our minds, since we’ll be able to get our voicemails even without a data connection. Google Voice can now pre-fetch voicemails, allowing you to listen to them later on while on the road (without internet). This is Read More
Google Voice for Android Updated with Mass Texting and Voicemail Prefetch
Mini_discussion_bubble iPod Touch Fans - Posted Wed, 16 Nov 2011 22:36:30 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 2:36 pm.   Google’s native Voice client for Android has been updated with a powerful new mass texting feature that makes it an even more viable replacement for old school SMS. If you’re on Sprint, we highly recommend integrating Voice into your account, so you can stop worrying about those pesky SMS fees. Plus, you can answer calls through Gmail and send and receive messages through the Voice website, so you’ll be able to keep in contact with your friends from the comfort of your computer. The app is now able prefetch voicemails to reduce the wait time when listening to missed calls, and the notification system has been improved. Read More
Google Voice lands MMS to email forwarding support | Android and Me
Mini_discussion_bubble Android and Me - Posted Mon, 17 Oct 2011 02:38:00 UTC +00:00
One of the most heavily requested features for Google Voice has undoubtedly been MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) support. The Google Voice app for Android has been tackling voice and text with ease for quite some time now, but pictures have always been an issue for the service. Thanks to a clever workaround from the Google Voice team, that’s becoming a thing of the past. From now on, when someone tries to send an MMS to your Google Voice number, the MMS will be forwarded to your email. In order for this to work, you just have to follow one easy step. Log into your Google Voice account online and enable text to email forwarding in the settings. That’s it. Right now, the official Google Voice Blog is saying that MMS to email forwarding will only work with Sprint customers. However, Life Hacker is reporting that it’s working fine for Virgin Mobile Read More

Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. The Google Voice app just received another update this evening, bumping it to version 4.2.34 and bringing a very short (but welcome) change log -- tablet support.  We've seen just how easy it is to sideload the app onto your tablet, and plenty of folks noticed the way the action bar looks more tablet-like in the update a few days ago, but now it's more official with it sitting right in the Market, waiting for you to download it. So get to it -- link is after the break. Thanks, Daves! Read More
Google Voice For Android Finally Updated With Fixes For Self-Pausing Play Button And Delayed Notifications
The Google Voice app for Android, which I've been using as my primary voicemail provider after gladly abandoning Sprint's own visual voicemail, saw its first update in many months today, which, among other things, finally fixed the most annoying bug that's been plaguing it for as long as I can remember. The bug I am talking about is, of course, having to click the Play button a second time after you've already clicked it once (the voicemail would stop playing 0-2 seconds into the call requiring this second press). Hallelujah! The other bug fixes and enhancements in today's update v0.4.2.34 are: Grab the update in the Market or by using the widget below.   Google Voice Read More

The Google Voice Android App by Google Inc. app is Google’s mobile Android optimized voice services tool. Google voice can act as a free visual voicemail replacement for your current telephone number. You can also obtain a Google telephone number and the Google Voice app will be able to make calls based off of that number and manage voicemails as well as text messages that come into the Google Voice number you have registered. Another excellent feature of Google Voice is the ability to make International calls through the Google Voice app at much cheaper or even free rates. The Google Voice Android App itself is very simply designed and is only meant to handle the specific functions of Google Voice. There is an area where all of you voicemails will be visually displayed, this will be where you can manage all of your voicemails, and you can play, pause, rewind, Read More

Wishing your your Motorola Xoom had some Google Voice lovin on it? Looks like Google is working on the application as we speak to make it more tablet friendly – or, should we say, more Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS friendly? Many people rely on Google Voice now, and a dedicated app is a must, so it’s good to see that Google is working to bring the popular app/service to the Xoom and its Honeycomb OS. As it stands today, you can access your Google Voice account from the browser on your Android Honeycomb tablet, but you won’t receive notifications of new calls, text messages, or voicemails – that’s just how it goes when you don’t have access to a dedicated app. Another downside to using Google Voice from the browser that users have been reporting is that voicemail messages will not play. This makes you stuck reading the horribly, though often comical, Read More

Finding stellar Android apps isn't the easiest task, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. Here's the cream of the crop. Twitter: The official Twitter app is good enough for almost everyone. Along with giving you a clean, easy way to keep track of your timeline and updating your status, Twitter for Android also has a snazzy swipe down to refresh feature. Free. Facebook: Facebook is finally decent on Android and now actually brings some unique features, namely the front page side-scroll of friend's recent photos and a pull up notification window. Free. Google+: It's Google's big soiree into social "sharing". The app has it all: a stream that shows what your friends are talking about (like Facebook), Huddle which is an easy to set up group chats (like GroupMe) and will even automatically upload the pictures you take on your phone to the cloud (like iCloud). Not quite sure how widespread this problem is, as it’s still developing, but word on the web is quite a few GV users are having problems using the service today. Problems have been ranging from calls never being connected, to calls being connected, but going out from a random number, to everything in between. Personally, I have been experiencing the random number bug. I’ll call out from Google Voice as normal, but the receiving caller is greeted with a number I don’t recognize. Google is aware of the problems and has released the following statement to TechChrunch: “We’re aware of the issue, which is affecting some Google Voice users, and are working on a fix.” Helpful eh? At least a fix is being worked on. Are you experiencing any problems? Let us know in the comments. Read More

With a more wide-open app Market and some seriously dedicated hackers, there's all kinds of mischief you can get up to with an Android phone. Here are some of our favorite apps for skirting fees, defeating corporate branding, and other kinda-sorta "Evil" maneuvers. Note: For a look at the flip side of the mobile OS coin, check out the best "Evil" apps for iPhone. Why does an app made by Google, and supported by most major carriers, merit any kind of mention during Evil Week? Think about the big picture. Sure, getting your friends to call a brand new number is a hassle, and the app isn't as reliable as, say, the bedrock dialer app on your phone. But once you're in, and once your callers are trained, you're doing a lot of things no business interest wants you doing. You're screening calls the smart way, keeping your voicemails off your Read More

Google Voice just got itself a nice little update that adds the ability to search your transcribed voicemails and text messages to find exactly what you want. We're going to have to see how useful it is, given that transcripts often are as accurate (albeit comical) as a 4-year-old with a mouthful of marbles. But, yes, it's getting better, and we all need to be able to search it.  Read More

Why You Want Google Voice on Your iPhone: Tech News «
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOM - Posted Thu, 30 Sep 2010 16:46:46 UTC +00:00
After over a year in limbo, Apple has reportedly approved Google’s Voice application for the iTunes App Store, indicating that the iPhone may finally see the popular software, says TechCrunch. Initial thoughts for the rejection last year were based on AT&T’s involvement, but Google Voice is available for AT&T devices on other platforms, such as those running on the BlackBerry and Android operating systems. It later became clear that Apple held up Google Voice since it replicates native features on the iPhone. Now that Apple has loosened developer restrictions for iOS devices, Google’s app could find its way to iOS devices once Google updates it to support multitasking for iOS 4. If you’re not familiar with Google Voice, I highly recommend you take a closer look at the software. Essentially, it can be used to route incoming calls to multiple handsets, landlines or VoIP services. You can even schedule which of your phones are active Read More

What may be surprising is that there are not one, but two of these widgets: a widget that shows the messages you have in your inbox: as well as the same widget for managing your Voice settings that was leaked a few weeks ago: What may be an even bigger surprise is that Google has now made both of these widgets available to non-G2 devices through the Android Market. Google Maps for Android Gets Turn-By-Turn Walking Directions, Satellite Imagery
For smartphone owners, asking people on the street for directions is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Why bother trying to remember a series of turns and landmarks when your phone can do that and more? Who needs confusing descriptions when you have satellite and Street View imagery? Android users certainly don't. Google has added "Walking Navigation", a marriage of walking directions, turn-by-turn GPS navigation and satellite imagery, to the newest version of Google Maps for Android. The latest addition comes as a part of Google Maps for mobile 4.5 for Android. It takes walking directions, which takes advantage of pedestrian pathways, overpasses and other such things, and pairs them with turn-by-turn GPS directions and satellite imagery. Simply enter the address of where you're trying to go, chose the "Walking" option from the navigation icon and the app will guide you, following along and vibrating when you reach the next Read More

Google today released an update to its Android app for Google Voice, a free phone management service that provides U.S.-based users with a single 10-digit number for all of their phone lines, including cellular, landline and VoIP. The revised app adds two new widgets to Android's home screen, thereby making it easier for users to access Google Voice's inbox and settings. The Inbox widget displays the user's most recent voicemails and text messages on the home screen. "You can now quickly flip though messages in your Inbox with the widget, and selecting any message preview will open it in the Google Voice app," wrote product manager Marcus Foster on the Google Voice Blog. The Settings widget, the second home-screen addition, features four icons that provide fast access to key features including: 1) the full Google Voice app; 2) a free text-messaging tool; 3) calling preferences; 4) the Do Not Disturb setting Read More

by Google has just released an update to its Google Voice Android app that seeks to make it easy for users to access voicemails as well as change their Google Voice settings. The biggest change to Google Voice for Android is the inclusion of widgets, a first for the app. After downloading the app from the Android Market, merely go to Menu/Add to Home/Android Widget, and you’ll see “Google Voice Inbox” and “Google Voice Settings” in the list. Choose both and add to your home screen. Once there, you can easily access your voicemails (think Visual Voicemail, without the propensity for randomly calling your contacts), listen to messages, read transcripts (which are still, sadly, incomprehensible) and respond by free, Google Voice texts or regular text messages. Google Voice texts do, in fact, work when sent to people who don’t have the app. Also, you can use the Settings widget to get Read More

Not all smartphone apps for the Google Voice service are created equal, as we discovered back in September, 2009, when we put each through its paces on iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android phones. On Thursday, Google updated its Google Voice apps for Android--our hands-down winner--and BlackBerry, the runner up. (If you must know, we declared the iPhone experience to be "a load of crap.") A modest enhancement to Google Voice on Android and BlackBerry tweaks the back-end calling mechanism to make dialing a faster process when you call out. Though there's no real change to the feature set on the front end, Google says that callers should notice quicker connection times. Calls took longer to place through the previous apps because the software needed to request an access number from the Google Voice server before achieving a ringtone. Google has cut out a few steps in the process it's now calling "Direct Read More

Google Voice is now open to anyone in the U.S. – no invitation is required. The free service provides one number to ring all your phones, voicemail transcriptions, and a ton of other things your carrier probably doesn’t provide. Check out the official Google Voice overview page for a complete list of features. If you have never checked out Google Voice, I would suggest at least installing the Android client and see how it works first hand. The voicemail transcriptions are my favorite feature and the main reason I switched over from my carrier’s voicemail. Additionally, you can send SMS text messages using your Google Voice number without charges from your carrier. The latest update also allows for better inbox synchronization which allows for instant notifications. Visit the official Google Voice site and just sign in with your existing Google Account to get started. Read More

Now that Google Voice is open to everybody in the U.S., small business owners, particularly those with less than 25 employees, should take a close look at Google's free phone management service. Here are ten good reasons why: 1) Be local, even when you're not: When setting up Google Voice, you have the option of selecting a phone number with the area code of your choice. So what's the small business benefit? Let's say you run a catering service that's based in San Jose, CA (408 area code), and you'd like to attract customers in nearby San Francisco (415 area code). By choosing a 415 number and making it the public contact number for your business--at least in your San Francisco-based ads, anyway--you may lure more customers from SF. (I'm assuming you'd also have a 408 number for your San Jose clientele.) Some industries benefit from a local presence. 2) Phone Read More

Starting today, Google Voice is open to the public. No need for an invitation. Google Voice is a service provided by Google that lets users customize their telephone experience by giving them one number that can forward to a number of different devices based on user preferences such as time of day or the contact who is calling. The service also provides a voicemail box which users can access not only on their phones, but on the web as well. It even has text transcribed voicemails for those times where you can't listen to each one. I've fully switched over to using Google Voice about 6 months ago and I love it. Using the Google Voice Android app, I get text messages, low international call rates and voicemails that I can read. Sprint was nice enough to loan me an HTC EVO 4G running Android for a few weeks, so I could compare it to the iPhone 4. I spent a few hours with it, here are some first impressions: Taking it out of the box, my first thought was, man, this thing is huge. You don't want a holster to hang this from your belt, you'll need to drag it around in a wheelbarrow. However, when you pick the EVO up it endears itself to you. Unfortunately, as of the time of this posting, the app is not yet available, which means I cannot offer any insight as to how well it works. That said, once available you will be able to find it in the Android Market. As to what we can expect, according to other reports, the app will be nicely integrated with Android including having the ability to use your existing address book. A few of the key features include allowing the user to make and receive calls that display their Google Voice number as opposed to their cell number, send and receive text messages, check your voicemail, read the transcription of your voicemail (which is delivered by text or email) as well as view your calling history. To begin with, the app now allows you to better control when you are using your Google Voice account as opposed to your regular number. With the new version, it is no longer all or nothing and allows you to choose from options that include always using your Google Voice number to only using it for international calls. You can also set it to not use Google Voice for any calls or have it ask before each call is made. Additionally, the new version also adds more alert settings for voicemail and SMS notifications. The Android world was abuzz yesterday with a tutorial to have Google Voice know which phones to ring depending on location. The tutorial had a great premise but was flawed by its set-up and dependence on Locale. Though I’ve loved Locale since its inception and considered it to be a top Android app, it now costs $10 and doesn’t perform as well as it did when still in beta. I found an easy solution for changing Google Voice settings based on location courtesy of AndroidCentral. Google Voice Locations makes it easy to manage GV activities. Similar to Locale, the app creates profiles based on GPS coordinates. Users can then edit those profiles to trigger actions, so a GV number would ring the home phone when someone is in range of their “Home” profile. It would then ring the office phone when near “Office” or ring the mobile phone during “Elsewhere,” a Read More

This is a major improvement over the previous notification system that could take as long as 15 minutes to go into effect. The Google Voice Android application is available for download in the Android Market for U.S. users. The latest version also includes improved contact functions that make it easier to contact or respond to people. Clicking a user’s name will bring up options to call their speed dial, bring up their contact entry, send an SMS text message, email, or open Google Talk (provided the person has an account linked to their contact entry). Download the new version of Google Voice and activate the faster notification by following Google’s instructions: To activate Inbox synchronization, open the Google Voice Read More
6 Free Android Apps That Will Make You Drop Your iPhone

by The Android Market may still lag behind the iPhone App Store in terms of variety and quality, but there is something to be said for the Android operating system’s extremely tight integration with existing Google products, and the wide choice of devices and carriers. There’s no question that the iPhone has many wonderful apps, but Android’s smart syncing with existing tools, interesting Android-only experiments coming every day from Google employees, and its open marketplace model have yielded some tools that may give the average iPhone user pause. If you’re looking for a change, or you’re in the smartphone market and still weighing the pros and cons, consider these Android-only apps and how they might fit into your work, play, and mobile lifestyle. 1 of 5 There's no denying that the iPhone OS is a gorgeous piece software. But when it comes to the home screen, "you get what you get, Read More
Google Voice Goes Real-Time (Well, Almost)
Google is touting a new feature for their mobile VoIP application, Google Voice: instant notification of new SMS text messages and voicemails. You may have thought an app meant to replace your phone's functions would already be doing that, but in reality, Google Voice delayed notifications for 15 minutes by default. You could change this to 5 minutes or force a refresh manually, but many don't bother tweaking settings or obsessively refreshing just to see if they have new messages. Now that's no longer necessary - messages are delivered almost immediately. According to news posted on the Google Voice blog, the new notification feature called "Inbox Synchronization" will notify your Android-powered device (sorry, iPhone users!) of new messages "within seconds" of receiving them. That's not exactly real-time, but close enough - at least now your text messaging friends won't think you're ignoring them. Unfortunately, this feature isn't being switched on automatically Read More

Can't forward a VM and the widget is huge. A 4x1 or 5x1 would be much better.

Would be great to be able yo merge text threads from same number together instead of having a dozen different ones from one number!

I'm a huge fan of google voice and I use it every day but since the update with the queuing function was released i've been having issues with messages getting stuck in queued status even with full signal and no data connectivity issues. It's been kindof a headache when I need the message to go through right away. Any chance of getting that fixed?

This app is a great answer to iMessages. Even though it came first, has more functionality, and is overall nicer. I'd love it to be updated more often, though. My one issue is that I'd like to be able to sort conversations by contact, not by date. Too many threads is annoying. Otherwise, nice app!

One feature I really want is the ability to enable/disable phones that my calls are forwarded to. I often have my work phone enabled when I'm at work (where my cell signal is garbage), but forget to disable it when I leave, so the secretary answers my personal calls if I don't answer the phone before her. If all features available from the web interface were available from the app, you'd earn my 5th star. I'd give you a 6th star and a bag of cookies if you can pick which Contacts use GV as the default dialer and which use your regular dialer (I call my girlfriend's non GV number with my non GV number for free mobile to mobile minutes, but EVERYONE else gets dialed with GV - I don't even know my non GV number). (Samsung Galaxy Nexus with version 0.4.2.54)

Still missing some incoming calls, like they never happened. They don't go to the phone, and they don't show up in Google Voice, but all of a sudden there's a voicemail. Also, audio volume for voicemail playback is still awful.

This is a very powerful app that has one major flaw: inconsistent syncing! Oftentimes I cannot tell if a msg has been successfully sent or not, and most importantly, it fails to sync consistently, especially when the phone has been idle. Until this is fixed, I must find an alternative.

I love being able to use my google voice number from my phone but i am ticked there is no Do Not Disturb button, It was on the version installed on my galaxy S II but not on the Galaxy Nexus?. I use it for my business line and would like to stop receiving calls after hours without having to get on my computer. A great feature to add is being able to say what hours and what days google voice number rings your phone, this way a do not disturb button isnt needed "for most people" *****Get Five stars when problem fixed*****

The back button is implemented in a stupid way. If you open Voice and it is already in a conversation, you hit back to go to inbox but instead it drops you to the home screen. Open Voice and it is still in the conversation, but this time back correctly takes you to inbox. Please fix this. When in a conversation, back should always go to the inbox/folder!

I've had 5 Android phones (including 3 good ones) and tons of ROMs, stock and not. This app always is laggy on all of them. It otherwise has always worked very well, but when it's lagging on a phone running a dual-core processor over 1.7 GHz, and everything else runs amazingly, something is wrong.

Best visual voicemail app I've used. Would be five stars if there was a way to batch select multiple messages to delete unless there is and I'm just an idiot.

Google really out did themselves on the recent update! Everything is working properly, super fast, no lag or missed messages, everything incoming/outgoing is in correct order and the MMS works perfectly! Having the ability to receive pictures now makes life easier. Plus the new look is very nice. Most stable release yet!

Got this to replace on my new Motorola Droid Razr's voice mail app which was lacking. The google voice app locked up during the setup process and I had to reset my phone to shut the locked up app off. Still didn't work after reboot. The app store said it was installed but I couldn't find the app anywhere. I uninstalled and reinstalled and the widget finally showed up. I still can't find the app other than to use the widget. Did a test voice mail and got it to work, but it is also texting me and it split the message into two texts so I get 4 notifications spread apart by about 2 minutes: missed call, 2 texts and then the google voice thing. No thanks. I shouldn't have to get on Droid Forums to make it work. 2 hrs to install. Also, when I try to access the voicemail from the shortcut key it goes to the greeting and it won't play back my messages so I lost that feature. I am removing it.

Saving money! Yes, this app can save money on calls and TXTs. I do not have a TXT plan on my phone but I can receive TXT as data through Google Voice's TXT app. Also if you have a limited minutes plan and also have FREE calling to x number of Friends and Family then adding your Google Voice number as a friend makes those calls FREE as well. Making a call to someone that you don’t want to have your cell number? No problem, set you phone to ask how to make the call, with your cell number of your Google Voice number. This feature is also helpful with touch screens, I used to tap a contact to view their entry info and my phone was calling them, at 3AM! Having it ask how to make the call eliminates those inadvertent dials.
J 5.0 stars
Needs more features, like consolidate sms msgs so you don't have fifty msgs from one person in your inbox and have to scroll forever to txt someone quickly. Other than small things like that, it works pretty good.

It's cool that i got to pick a local number since we still have our old cell numbers from out of state and i like that sending texts with it eliminates me using my text allowance from verizon. Custom VM greetings is cool. Here is where it can improve: 1) Add picture testing ability. 2) I thought this app would send my phone calls via my data so that i wouldn't be using my limited verizon talk minutes. 3) incoming texts seem delayed sometimes. 4) need better vm transcription. Droid bionic
Reza 5.0 stars
Great application. I have slowly started a transition to make this my main number. The sms comes to your phone very quickly although the web interface and the app itself lags behind in synch. The sms coming in from one party can also be split over a number of threads but long as you are using your phone's sms interface you are fine.

Use sipdroid app with this app to replace your phone. Now google has to make this app costly because I do not pay for my lame virgin mobile service anymore. I don't have a big internet company like verizon but I have a cricket wifi modem. I pay $50 a month for my internet and I use google voice to text and sipdroid to call. And the best thing is the wireless modem can go with you wherever you want. And if u don't have wifi you can make crappy 3g calls and vpn calls. I am a completly mobile guy now.

While the original version of Google Voice worked without problems, Google Voice no longer works on T-mobile G1 and Android 1.6. After installation and configuration, it goes in an endless force-close loop. I tried uninstalling/re-installing on two different phones several times with the same result. It should be fixed to work correctly under 1.6. if this is not feasible, android 1.6 should be removed from the compatibility list.

early user, media coverage including google lit had me thinking the app had native voip support. found out the hard way when I got my first couple Sprint bills that not only does the app not offer voip technology as the voice add-on in gmail does; the app also utilizes data to contact google servers to initiate your phone calls for you, thereby negating my free mobile 2 mobile, thereby costing me up the a*s. its cool for unlimited texting tho.

It's great to text and call Canada for free. Pretty much replaces my landline with free wifi calling through T-Mobile. Text messaging is very annoying though that it does not thread messages when have a conversation with the same person. Multiple conversations show up in your inbox from the same person. Update screwed up being able to use the standard messaging app. Although I have mine set to not allow text messages through gv they still come through. Nexus S 4g. On the website I have it disabled it comes back on. Plz fix. Also text messages from new numbers not stored in contacts don't come through stock message app and only through gv. Come on Google

The voicemail mp3 can't be played. From voice the screen goes black and the progress bar moves but no sound. Different mp3 players say they can't play the mp3. And I never see the transcript that I will see when I look at the same message on my PC. Texting works great except for the no support for short numbers.

Over all it integrates very well both with the phone and your Google account. The 2 things I would like to see are a more intuitive interface for switching modes and a WiFi fallback for voice when in airplane mode or local cell service is not available.

It works well if you check your voicemail often, but I might get 20-30 voicemails a day. The lack of multi-select and CONSTANT refreshing make this app unbearable to use. Delete a voicemail > refreshes to top of page Want to delete several old voicemails > delete defaults back to only the most recent entries and parses those entries further down in the list that you have to scroll down and wait to load in order to access > result: deleting old voicemails takes a ridiculous/unnecessary amount of swipes

I love using this for my data-only plan, but there are a few annoyances. I would like to see the notifications go away once you click on the person's name or (if you're in the conversation already) when you click on the text area. Also, some customization would be great, even if it's just a few colors, bubble styles or pictures. And MMS would be great too! **Using on Gingerbread HTC Evo View

Doesn't show text sent unless u get a response. Repeatedly freezes, force close, & hangs on trying to send (except on Nexus 3) sometimes requires device restart & then sends twice. Atrix-4G, Nexus-3, G-S2, infuse, Streak5 (I change phones often,) this seem to be Voice issue & not phone or network problem. Hope Google can find fix, I love the App & been using it for years for Calls, int'l Calls, & Text. Update brought ui improvement with less performance functionality. Shame.

Okay ....better. 4 stars cause It would be better if they thread text by person not by conversation. U end up with a bunch of threads by the same person. A little slow and doesn't queue as much anymore, a plus. Serves its purpose of not having to pay an expensive texting plan.

This app has several improvements over the previous version. It seems that alot of issues with newer android releses blame google voice. If you are running other window managers it can also cause problems. New widget is great and provides many more features. I can work almost completely using its features. Open and close seem faster and there is a little red marker next to messages being sent but not transmitted.

Like other G1 users who posted, after the 0.4.2.54 update, I have an infinite crashing loop if I try to open the app via the shortcut. Strangely, if I receive a message I can open it fine, calling in/out works, and if I select "Google Voice" in the option of how I want to text a contact I can compose messages fine. As of late, before the update the app was also very memory intensive. Overall, a great app but sadly not optimized for poor old G1.

It would be nice if I could make Google voice calls to phones from my tablet over wifi. This app is rather lame, as it rings my phone, and then connects to the other person. Feature to make & receive calls from this app would be great. So one star for now.

I'm a huge fan of Google Voice, but the Android app is still lacking. When I hit the PLAY button, the screen goes blank for the length of time of the message, but the message doesn't play.

Google Voice is a great service. It's super convenient being able to receive texts and voicemails on my laptop. The Android app is a little buggy though. Sent texts show as being unsent and sometimes texts aren't shown in chronological order. Often the app corrects itself but sometimes I need to reboot it. Once in a blue moon friends have trouble texting me but to be fair that could be their service. Hope to get multimedia text soon.

You have to go to your Google voice account online and change the setting to get it to stop doing that west. When you first ran the app you let it take over all phone calls and sms messaging. Took me a good 30-40 minutes after going down to Sprint to find that out

I love the app and used it for years now, but one thing I don't like is, there is no way to enter the google voice settings itself, only the settings for the android phone itself. Using a browser works, but I think it should be in the app. Other than that, absolutely amazing!

Hey, everybody! I think I figured out why the app is so much slower this update. Someone at Google has to read each of our texts before they can actually send it...they just have too many sometimes so it's a little slower. That MUST be it! I use this app everyday. For the most part it works very well. However, the app does not display some sent messages randomly. This is a huge issue. It does what it claims but it stole my number from Sprint and I wanted a completely different number in addition to my Sprint one so I tried to cancel the Google Voice and wound up completely losing my phone number and had to waste several hours with Sprint to get a new phone number which was very inconvenient. I like what this does, but like so many applications it was written with little regard to controlling data usage. I am on a very limited data plan, so I cannot afford to have applications that use data while just running in the background. This uses quite a bit of data just running inthe background. I assume that it needs check for voicemail and texts received. I would like an option to turn off those features. I don't need it for voicemail or incoming texts. I want to use it for outgoing texts and calls I know that it needs to use some data for outgoing calls and outgoing texts and that is fine because I can decide whether or when to make use of those features.

You would expect google to have the best apps, especially for their own operating system. This app is an ugly exception. I had already uninstalled it due to receiving txt messages sometimes hours after they were sent. Today I saw there was a recent update and figured I'd give it a go. It appears google took a page from microsoft and decided to just put lipstick on a pig. The app STILL does not get the messages when they arrive. It's so sporadic I can't even estimate. It might be 7 minutes, might be 7 hours. Who knows.. Google sure doesn't. uninstalled yet again. Maybe they'll get it right next time.

The sound and capabilities of the app are very good. My only complaints are that the SMS options on it be refined or allowed to be integrated with other popular SMS apps such as Handcent, Go SMS, Pansies, & Chomp SMS. I have been using Google voice for quite sometime now. Hands down it's better than nothing, but it is indeed lacking a few key features, really important features. One is just plain old buttons. There isn't even a dedicated button to view your inbox in each window. The inbox link is in the labels section, but there is no dedicated button when reading a text. I receive texts messages on time. Most people don't take care of their phones. You're supposed to turn off your phone once a day for atleast a minute everyday. Also you're supposed to clear cache, history, and cookies once a week so your phone runs properly. Sometimes that could be the case as to why your phone isn't working with an app. The only problem with this app is that you can't block contacts from it, you can't add contacts within the app, and you can't send picture messages.

Good app, but is there a way to combine the texts I get from one person. It seems like if I text someone on a new day, it starts a new conversation, instead continuing from the previous day

U.I. Needs to be more consistent & on par as gmail's navigation of labels & files. It'd be nice 2 share with no file size limit...make it a BBM messenger! I have sprint & texting comes free anyway but I'd like 2 know if they read my text & be able 2 take it back if not read yet.also a label switcher like gmail would be better than menu/label.please work on the u.i. to be consistent as other apps are.

2/7/2012: Good update. We're waiting for native sip support for google voice. Also, if you can make the app more like the gmail app for Android 4.x, that would be awesome. That makes it easy to switch between labels.

Update loaded fine w/out any problem. I love the GV app on my phone and makes communicating easier when I'm working on my laptop because I can just txt from my keyboard. I'm still waiting for (1) MMS to be able to send photos and (2) for msgs from each contact to thread together and not start a new thread each time they txt.

I first reviewed this on Gingerbread, but now I use it on ICS. It looks and works great! I think the main inbox could use an uplift, but otherwise the UI is very pleasant and works well overall. Epic Touch

Just use it for Voicemail&it's great! It provides OS notifications & even converts vm 2 txt (which I wouldn't expect to work very well)
rougegoat 0.0 stars
Threads by conversation instead of person, which is funky. Provides free, easy to use visual voicemail+texting+the usual Google Voice multi-device benefits. Not sure why it doesn't use the visual voicemail API for ICS devices. That would be extremely useful for those who use this as their voicemail service.

Queue feature was very much needed! It could use performance and improvements, but it's same speed as prev. version. No lag here. For those having problems: Clear data and cache. The whole thing about Google sharing your info or texts without consent is bull. Read Google's new privacy policy. Better mms integration and support=5 stars

It is already my main calling app. Fully integrates with android. Threaded conversations and visual voicemail are great. Free text messages! Still needs support for picture messages. Could become fantastic if merged with google talk and got VoIP calling and video chat built right in.

I live in the US with an HTC Thunderbolt powered by verizon which forces you to pay to receive voicemail notifications. So, I set up Google Voice and would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for finding out today that when you record your name into the voicemail greeting you can never go back to the system default. It's really annoying, esp if you value privacy. Otherwise, great app! BUT PLEASE FIX GOOGLE!!!

I've used the service since forever and loved it with Gizmo5. Since being folded in Google it's only gotten better. The telco's tried to delay it but SMS w/o bucket-charges is here, now, because GoogleVoice and others. MMS is not far behind. MOST IMPORTANT: being able to port my GoogleVoice number whenever and wherever I require. I'm a Gadget Freak and enjoy trying different things. With GV I distribute one number, no matter which phone(s) I choose to ring. One number to rule them all! (couldn't resist)

First, please make it an option to use Google Voice for text messaging. I love using it for my phone calls, but I have a 3rd party app for texts that I love and I want to use that and not have to receive double notifications. Second, please could you make a batch delete option, like in GMail. It's a hassle to have to delete voice mails and those texts (that I don't even want in there) one at a time. I do love it, but I want the option to use it for texts, not have Google just hijack control.

Need customization for notifications As a google voice user, this app is essential for retrieving voicemail. However, there's no way to distinguish if you want notifications for new text messages vs. new voice messages, it's all or nothing. I would like to receive texts using the traditional SMS system on my phone (so that it works even without a data connection). So my option is to be notified of new voicemails or to receive two notifications per text message.

Works very well with Nexus One emails are just about instant. The only problem is the app does not notify you instantly on the phone itself.

Reopens itself after closing, gets annoying. My phone seems to be MUCH slower after updating this as a service (Droid).

"Ask every time" needs a memory function to ask less. The only reason to ask everytime is because GV will dial their own 406 numbers. Dummies.
