Google Translate just got a little update that brings big functionality: the ability to recognize written words in seven different languages. The previous version allowed for text and spoken input only, so this update adds just another method to the mix. You may be asking yourself why is this a big deal? This is a useful feature partly due to the fact that it can translate Chinese and Japanese, which both use characters that are uncommon to English keyboards. Google has now taken the covers off their latest Google Translate update and it's a big one. In an effort to help bring down language barriers, Google Translate has brought speech-to-speech translations for 14 languages to Android. We began with just English and Spanish, but today we’re expanding to 14 languages, adding Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish. To help with speech translations, Google Translate now also allows you to correct entries before sending them off for translations. Now when you speak, fluffy bunny with a mouth full of marshmallows and it turns out to be "funny money" you'll be able to correct it to ensure correct translation. The new version is in alpha, so expect some bugs. Google Translate is an impressive translating application. This free app is so advanced it could give a lot of paid online services a run for their money. That being said, it's not perfect. On the surface, Google Translate works just like other online translation tool you might be familiar with, popular sites like Freetranslation.com and Babel Fish, for instance. While this app can translate dozens of languages, this app seems to have a tighter grip on the Romance languages. As far as Android translation apps go, Google Translate is still among the best available - sure, it isn't perfect, but it's free and for the occasional translation it'll suffice. To celebrate the app's first birthday, Google has updated it to 2.0 and added a new feature called "Conversation Mode." Conversation Mode allows you and your foreign friend to speak in two different languages before having Google Translate display the words you say onscreen in your native languages (as seen in the second screenshot above). For now, it only works with Spanish and English, and it has problems with regional accents, background noise, and rapid speech, but it's a start. This version of Translate was also demoed using German at the 2010 IFA conference: Version 2.0 also includes an updated UI, which looks quite slick. Google lets us know in a report today that since then, they’ve added several updates to make the app totally easy (easier) to work with. They’ve added dropdown boxes to help select languages, improved the input box (somehow or another) and cleaned up the icons and the whole layout. PLUS there’s an experimental feature added on. When I downloaded Google Translate and associated language packs on my Motorola Droid one of the FIRST things I did was attempt to speak into the phone using the speech-to-text function, have it translate in a different language, and then hear it read back to me in the translated language. 90% of the time if you translate a whole sentence, it will get something wrong somewhere in the line. but if you're translating word by word, nothing beasts this! and the voice recognition gets my English, Chinese, Japanese, all very accurately

In Armenian, when trying to listen to translated text using Galaxy Nexus GSM(4.0.2)the sound isn't coming out, but display says speaking in Armenian, when speak button is pressed. When tested on Nexus S with ICS 4.0.3, the sound feature works great. If you would fix it, that would be very helpful.

in every other language that isn't English, almost every other language has a formal and informal term. in google translate it does not allow you to give a formal or informal term. this would be a great improvement if they did allow you to you whether it is a formal or informal term yes, otherwise this is a brilliant application and should be used everywhere that you need it but because you cannot differ between formal and informal i can go as high as a 3star review

I really like this app because you can easliy type in any phrase and it will give you the phrase in any language instantly. Even if you don't know what language the phrase comes from if you type it in it will tell you what language it came from. The only thing that I don't really like about this app is that the voice sounds really robotic and sometimes pronounces a few things VERY differently, but other than that its a really good app.

Greek SMS messages need to be in capital letters or the receiving phone will not display the characters. They all show as question marks. A small feature to output the translation to capitals would be awesome. Otherwise the app is very good.

It's a really great app with pretty accurate translations and an easy to use interface. The speech mode speaks a little too fast. I wish google would add some features that the Bing translation app on windows phone already have. First a easy to use augmented reality mode as part of the app that's as easy to use and intuitive and secondly (and most importantly) offline mode. I would be using the app a lot more if there were an offline mode available. I imagine people need the app when they're out of country and don't have access to a data connection. Three stars until it catches up with the competition.

I agree that familiarity with the "new" language is almost essential. Either way though, it is a big help. I'm using it to re-learn french. Translating can be tricky due to cannotative differences, active/linking verb forms and changing tenses, dialect, slang etc, but this app is great for translating the words or phrases you want. You know what would be great? Verb conjugation tables. How awesome would that be. Maybe tense forms, a private tutor and the kitchen sink. Yes!

Hi - I use Motorola Xoom 4.0.4. The app is awesome! It would be even better if the user could "pin" a language in the app so that the language is available without a data connection - similiar to making a movie, book, or music available offline. I travel extensively in Southeast Asia (Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.) many of the areas in which I work do not have wifi or mobile data available - it is very costly in the areas that do offer it. The option to "pin" the language would make your app a must have for business and recreational travelers.

If you activate rich dictionary in setting in Google translate, you won't get translated definition anymore. Instead, they give you a bunch of sample sentences.

This is awesome, but it needs speed control for spoken output. Tried multiple langs and the output is too fast to catch details in the pronunciation. Spelling out of non-translatable words was really mashed together. That could use its own separate speed control. This app is very useful; however, I'd like to see a camera option. Google Goggles can only do certain languages, and there are some things I cannot type in. For example, I was in the Narita airport yesterday, and it would've been great if I could've translated the Japanese on a bottle of drink. It looked like some kind of tea, but I couldn't be sure what kind.

Its missing many word, it does direct, word to word translation on a sentence, some words in Swahili have more than one or two meanings i.e "kaa" (crab, charcoal or sit) so when placed with other words the meaning of the phrase changes. This app is short on that. So I not know if this shallowness applies to all languages, I am afraid to try lest I say something I never meant. However, this good job.

This works most of the time but has the usual muffled with voice recognition and background noise. You must speak very clearly and slowly but pauses are taken as being the end of the sentence and thus what you want to translate. Keep the number of words low as it can't translate whole conversations or more than one simple sentence. Should be grey for helping kids with French homework, ordering things in France etc. If your French etc is rubbish, this is sure to help. Note only tried the French so far.

People who speak Filipino and in no way does it fully translate at all. Its broken with some english and Filipino words. Sometimes it just translates it Filipino!? Very frustrating please fix!

I love using this. But it can be difficult, at best, to get a correct translation if you know next-to-nothing about the language(s) you're deciphering. I can rely on this to help me when I'm on the go, but only when translating into/between languages for which I have at least 1 year of classroom study under my belt, as some kind of grammar/structure foundation. A true, 99% accurate, computerized, multi-language translation tool is still in the distant future for use by the general population!

Probably the best translation app there is. However it's not always accurate. Google still has trouble with oriental languages. Mandarin Chinese comprehension is pretty good, but translation to Chinese can produce some strange results at times. Great for looking up single words, but sentences can be a bit confused. Good, but not quite a universal translator.

I've been an RN for 23 years. I've always had to call an interpreter when there was a language barrier with one of my patients. Sometime the time spent waiting is critical to the patient's care. Now with this on my phone, I don't have to wait. I use it all the time. The patients are as impressed as I am. Every nurse or doctor should have this tool in their pocket like I do. I honestly and seriously believe there should be a nobel prize or something for this app/technology. This is life saving stuff here!

It would be very nice if we could have an option of "look up in dictionary" system wide when we select a word in any application and with that we can have the meaning of the word very fast in google translate. for instance suppose I find a new word when I read a pdf ebook so I go and highlight the world and from copy/paste/cut menu select this new "look up in dictionary" button and that opens the translator and shows the meaning.

Translation and speech are pretty decent. Would be nice if translation gave more information, e.g. part of speech, conjugations perhaps. Love the conversation mode and related phrases. The dictionary is pretty bad. It's amazing that with Google's aggregating power they can't return definitions that ColorDict with static dictionaries does, e.g. rondure. Would be great if you could click on words within definitions and if linked synonyms were shown. Overall, much room for improvement.

I've been an RN for 23 years. I've always had to call an interpreter when there was a language barrier with one of my patients. Sometime the time spent waiting is critical to the patient's care. Now with this on my phone, I don't have to wait. I use it all the time. The patients are as impressed as I am. Every nurse or doctor should have this tool in their pocket like I do. I honestly and seriously believe there should be a nobel prize or something for this app/technology. This is life saving stuff here!

Allows me to speak with my Taekwondo instructors in Korean even though I know no Korean. When I showed them this functionality they were very pleased. Our assistant instructor especially loves it because his English is very poor and he has a hard time getting people in stores and whatnot to take him seriously. It would be very nice if we could have an option of "look up in dictionary" system wide when we select a word in any application and with that we can have the meaning of the word very fast in google translate. for instance suppose I find a new word when I read a pdf ebook so I go and highlight the world and from copy/paste/cut menu select this new "look up in dictionary" button and that opens the translator and shows the meaning.

HTC Incedibe Works on HTC Incredible, Droid 2.2. Conversation mode only in Spanish, 15 voice language input, 150 language translated. Shows english and native language letters together when pronouncing words which help sounding it out. Version 2.1 installs well and you don't have to pay the $2.99 per language per voice like other SVOX apps. It spoke Korean and I didn't need to change a setting or pay for a Korean voice. FREE IS AWESOME.

Very useful Allows me to speak with my Taekwondo instructors in Korean even though I know no Korean. When I showed them this functionality they were very pleased. Our assistant instructor especially loves it because his English is very poor and he has a hard time getting people in stores and whatnot to take him seriously. He got an Android smartphone specifically for this app.
