Hot on the heels of Barnes and Nobles' latest update to the Nook for Android app, Google have followed suit with a little update to their own Google Books app. The changelog touts the ability to +1 a book while reading, in book search and landscape mode for flowing text on phones, and perhaps more interestingly promises better support for 7-inch tablets. With the impending launch of the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, Google doesn't seem to want to be left out in the e-reading stakes. While there isn't a great deal of choice in the 7-inch tablet space as yet, it's still a nice feature to have included. Plus it'll work on your hacked Nook Color. Download links after the break.

As far as I’m concerned, the only thing my Android mobile can’t do is wash my clothes..oh, and maybe button my shirt. That said, I don’t know why, until recently, I’d totally neglected to use Google’s eBooks app on my phone. I mean, why carry around 12 ounces of paperback, when you already carry your phone around and it fits snuggly in the back pocket of your 501′s (kidding, if you’re wearing 501′s, you probably don’t even have an Android device…but I’m sure that Motorola RAZR you’ve got works just fine, lol). I recently downloaded and completed my first eBook, and let me tell you, if you’ve had any apprehension to giving up your physical paperbacks, and aren’t interested in toting around additional devices–eBooks on your Android mobile will rawk your socks off!! Navigation is extremely easy, turning a page is as simple as a swipe across your screen, and the text/font is totally readable.

California, Feb 28: Internet giant Google Inc. has announced the launch of Google Books app for Android devices. Users with smartphones or tablets running on Android operating system can download the Google Books app from Android Market freely. The new Google Book app is available on both smartphone version and web version of Android Market. Users can choose variety of books from different genres like horror, fiction and science among others. Google said that users can access more than three million ebooks on the go. Design is flawless, the ICS theme is cool looking. Fonts read well, and the day modes are effective. But this forgets about the large number of people who markup books with notes and a highlighter. I can bookmark a website, but I can't bookmark a page in a book I own? Sorry this is an important part of reading for me, so the app loses a few points.Once it has that I feel like it'll be the best ebook app out there.

This app is a strong rival for the kindle app. Its ability to read books aloud is a HUGE feature. The only thing missing for me is bookmarks, but I don't miss them as much as I thought I would.

I can unistall it, I can move it to SD and I can see my 2 purchased books, useful app even if its better if used on a tab like my Galaxy Tab or something for the comfort . Anyway good apps!

It simply shows a black screen and doesn't open. It just says it won't open and asks if I want to report it. Even after a force close I still get pop ups telling me it isn't working. Truly the most useless app on my phone and not worth the toilet paper it was no doubt written on. GS2 with ICS.

Why is Google so tone deaf? This app is beautiful and has the potential to take off and help Google sell a boat load of books, but it needs features like others have stated - copy and paste, pinch to zoom, highlighting text, Bookmarks, dictionary, add notes, remember last page viewed, etc. Please Google, fix this nagging problem now and it will skyrocket to 5 stars

I've just downgraded my rating to 3 stars because this app hasn't developed like it should. Where is the dictionary tool? What about notes and highlighting? These features work fine in a browser, but not in the app? That's a bit silly. I like the layout and overall feel of this app quite a bit (hence the three stars), but I won't be buying any more Google Books until I get these basic features that are present even in free alternatives.

I downloaded two books and after the first successful launch of the application and reading a snippet of each book, the application force closes on any attempt after. Samsung Droid Charge user is very upset! Get your s#*t straight Google Play! I would give this app zero stars if it was an option.

Missing so many features. No sepia. I love sepia. No highlighting. No note-taking. No built-in dictionary. Lack of font options. And most of all, no sideloading books? Stick to Mantano/Aldiko. This has great potential, but Google needs to work on the core functionality and not the look of the app. Functionality > form.

I love the day and night settings so I can read next to my wife and child without waking them. Only had one problem and that's with a recent update where I can't open my books. I'm sure their customer service will be great, they always are.

If you want to be able to buy a book, and read it in seconds, be able to read in the dark (without hurting your eyes), then what more do you want. I found plenty of free books available on this app, and it is very easy to buy a book as well. Managed to get a hold of a taster book, and moments later purchased the whole book. You can buy a book starting from a £1, but if like me you are a mad fan of "The Walking Dead" you can buy the first book on it, (Or read the sample as I did first) and then just buy it!

Specifically for bookmarks. There should be more options for bookmarks the current system is horrible. Long press or option to bookmark in the options would be an easy solution imo. Otherwise decent book app

This app actually is a nice app. This is one of the few properly coded apps. Its UI is smoother than butter. More apps should be neat, functional, and work like this. Whatever Google did to this app, they should do to Google Currents. These apps are worlds apart in UI design and responsiveness. Its how Android apps should be.

Downloaded this last week and have loved it sofar, really easy to download books even from PC as your account and device are linked, so you can download books on PC and find them on your device minutes later. Good quality too whilst reading books and wide range of free and paid books.

Although I was happy with the new features, I came a problem that came along with the new format. When I'm done with certain books I like to delete them if I don't like them as I would like my library to be only stocked with books I would like to read or would like to read again. I downloaded two demos.and could not permanently delete a book. I tried all sorts of methods deleting from phone, library, restarting the apparently and phone in various combinations and they still pop back up like a virus.

Works great, but would love to see highlighting with copy/paste capability, and bookmarks. Page navigation is presently kind of unwieldy, with no way to reference within the book.

Great for finding/downloading and reading books on. Easy to use one handed, very easy to see in both daylight and in the dark. May not have pinch-to-zoom or highlighting, but I've never needed them, my paper books don't have those features either and I can read them OK ;) Its always remembered my last read page, great been using the app on multiple devices as I can always pick up where I left off.

Automatically starts reading aloud whenever I open it on my GNex. Can't make it stop doing this. So annoying! Also, hardly any features -- for example, no ability to highlight or make notes. You'd think Google could do a decent job with their own ebook reader, but no. I'm giving up on this piece of crap and going back to the Amazon Kindle app, which is tons better.

On scanned books the app REALLY needs a way to maintain a different zoom level (one that zooms out the often large and empty margins) throughout as opposed to having to readjust at evry turn of a page. This alone would make me and a number of my colleagues 95% satisfied. In the meantime 1 star.

Missing in gingerbread: Ability to zoom in on graphics, maps, etc!! Sepia. Dictionary!!!! Bookmark tab/fold corner. Change text colour. Updated: 3-d page flip. I'm not sure what everyone else is talking about. It always saves my pages, pinch to zoom works on my phone also. LG Optimus Q. I would love a highlight and copy and paste feature. Other than that, the app works great, I love the night mode, this app is pretty good but could use a few updates.

The book store on google doesn't have asany books as amazon does, but this app is much better than the kindle app. On tablets, more text on the screen, which means less page turning. On the phone its a bit better with that animation. Syncing is perfect, probably better than kindle (I've had a number of problems in the past with it) a dictionary would be nice, as well as highlighting. People complaining about pinch to zoom... you don't use it nearly as much as you think and you can live with out it.

This app is fine for reading novels in straight-through fashion. However, if you want to highlight, add notes, etc., this app won't work. It won't even display highlights, etc., that have been made on the Google Books web site. I wish that coding had gone into those essential functions instead of the fancy page turn effect.

I really like having a built in book app. The page turning is beautiful, but, EVERY SINGLE TIME I multitask back to the app, the bottom bar never goes away. I have to exit my book and go back for the bar to drop. That cost 3 stars.

This reader does not let you highlight or bookmark as others do. The animation is great but it also lacks more options for themes. Solid white or solid black are both too high in contrast. Either an option for beige pages or dark gray or even custom would be ideal.

Come on Google!!! Why does the iOS version of Play Books get updated before the Android version? "The Google Play Books app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices is getting a major update that will greatly enhance your reading experience. You can now add bookmarks, highlight text, and take notes in your books. These will all be synced to the cloud and appear in your other devices and apps where the features are enabled." The only thing flawed about this is that you can't copy and paste, or even highlight certain text. When working on an essay you have to remember the pages and where the text is located, then you gotta rewrite the text oppose to.Adobe you can copy and paste and less headaches. If possible I would like to read my book on Adobe instead.

Since recent update search inside book no longer works on sgs2. Agree would be much better with dictionary. Also to "B" book waking wife up. Go to settings-accessibility-disable. Hope I got that right. Talkback should not be checked either.

I really like this app and the integration with Google play, but there are some bizarre quirks. The read aloud feature should be turned off by default, or at least have a setting to change what you want the default to be. Its also sometimes hard to bring up the menu/navigation

I just love google. The only problem I have with this app is no bookmark. I've lost my place a couple of times, other than that it works well. It has been a little glitchy lately but I'm not sure if it was the update or my phone.

They either don't know how to use the app, have some sort of cheap phones, or somehow messed it up. I had been reading a Google book on my tablet. Just installed the app on my phone, turned on sync, opened my book and it's on the exact page I stopped reading on my tablet. Another win for a Google, and another loss for people who aren't smart enough for a smartphone.

Dont listen to people when they say u cant zoom, highlight, or simply remeber the lastpage viewed. This app does all of this; I just love it. Its like a virtual library; one place to keep all my books. Fantastic app :-)

So this app is just about perfect of any book app out there. The book app that comes pre-installed to the Asus Transformer is a little bit better in the way of having more features. One feature being is having multiple bookmarks; this feature would make an excellent boost of quality in this app. Another suggestion being having the ability to mark specific paragraphs; this would make it almost essential for making notes for a report. Another thing that would help the most is giving the user to synchronize the multi-bookmark feature between their other android devices. I don't believe it does that already.

I have a 4.5 inch screen which is perfect for reading with. And since alot of older books had only scanned pages, it didn't bother me at all having slightly smaller type. But since the new update it now creates a spacer around the edges of the scanned pages instead of filling the screen up. Also, I can't use flowing text in all the books either.

Page sync between tablet/phone/web works perfectly! Just close out of the book and poof....page saved. One of the biggest features I wish the mobile/tablet had is the dictionary. The web-based Play Books has a dictionary feature built in when you double-click a word. Copy+Paste, highlight, and bookmarks would be cool as well, but I'd put dictionary as my number one requested feature.

After last update, search function stopped working in the app. Search also works much less well in the play store, used to be able to search contents of the books for relevant material, now the search only for title and description. Please fix, this is by far the poorest part of google services.

Not sure what all the bad reviews are about. I can read fine on galaxy s2 and this also syncs with ipad, remembers which page I was on last regardless of device. Not had any issues at all. Interface is quite basic but all you need really.

With the screen of My Galaxy Nexus, reading on this is a quite enjoyable experience. However, the app itself is barebones at best. No highlighting, pinch to zoom, and I don't like that I can't see the notification bar. Also I wish there was a dictionary for highlighted words, which would be very helpful. My main complaint is that whenever I open a book, my phone instantly starts reading aloud, which is very disruptive and aggravating. This is a decent app, and it looks nice, but it has a long way to go.

I installed the latest version on my sgs2 running 2.3.3. Now when I open a book I get a blank screen until I change pages and the blue bar that shows you progress won't go away unless I close and reopen the book. A lot of features could be added. After reading my current book I am going back to Kindle.

Works great on my device, very quick to load and is super responsive when flicking through pages. It would be even better if you could manually place bookmarks wherever you want and make notes on a page but that stuff is just extra and doesn't make a great deal of difference to my reading experience.

After the update for 2.3 with the whole UI change and the added 3D animation for page flips previously only available in 3.0+ versions. I find that the experience is much better and feels a lot more complete. Google has really done a good job and has listened. That being said I think that there is still work to be done. I'm not sure what the 3.0+ versions have exactly since I am on a 2.3 device but there still is missing features that are necessarily in order to be able to compete with the competition such as Amazon Kindle. First off choice. When I search for say, the bible, I get many many different versions of the book. Some are free some are paid. Often times the book I want is not available on Google Books, forcing me to either use another provider or buy the physical book. Features and consistency seems to be a problem. On the app on chrome, Google Books offers section notes among others not available on the mobile application. No bookmarks is a real annoyance and indexing of book's chapters is not always consistent either. I have come across some scanning problems in some books which makes me have to guess what it says.

I love the page turning animations, but that's about all this app can do. You can't bookmark, highlight, make notes or anything other than turn pages and navigate. Where's the love for this app Google...??? I refuse to purchase content until I can do what should be basic functionality in a modern e-reader (Amazon Kindle is an example). It would also be nice to be able to switch to a single page mode in landscape.

The app is ok, but needs some work. The biggest problem I have is that the app reads aloud every time I open it up on my Galaxy Nexus. Nothing like waking the wife up with the app reading aloud automatically. There needs to be a way to make that stop happening. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews. All the lettering is crisp and I never have a problem opening books. I have six right now and it saves my place on each of them. You can resize the text to your comfort and the page turning animation looks nice. This does everything I want in a book reading app.

There room for many improvements here. Many of the ebooks are extremely expensive. Much better deals can be had else where. Not sure what the ebooks format is in but their very BIG in megabytes. There also no warning to let you know that the ebook your about to download will be very BIG. I downloaded 4 books today and thats 600Mb!!! Get it together Google, or you'll very quickly lose out on this one...

So far I've only read the free built-in books, but I've got to say, it's not that bad of an app at all. I've been going through and rating most of the 1-star reviews as either unhelpful or spam depending on whether they actually have relevance (like whining about the app not being uninstallable) or not (like whining about the name of the Play Store). Like this app, or the idea of it, however there are serious problems with it as it stands. Reading the walking dead book and the book itself freezes every couple of minutes, sometimes less. The read aloud feature is also enabled every time I reopen the book which means I have to waste more time disabling it. It also doesn't keep the place I read last from pc to phone very well. I decided to jump off the Kindle bandwagon, and hop on the Google one, but this app really makes it hard to do. There's no bookmark option, not black text on white screen option, and no way to quickly find the definition of a word. I will say that it does have a great interface, and books tend to be priced better than they do on Amazon. If Google would only fix those few features, this would be without a doubt, a 5 star app.

It reads books all right. But on my Android phone it doesn't switch to landscape mode which anyone with a smaller device desperately needs. Also there are no next and previous page buttons, just the big scroll that will not let you go page by page because the resolution is too small. This has been an issue for some time, as anyone can google. I hope it will get resolved some day.

Wow, all of these negative reviews... This app was on your phone already, under the name google books. It was great on my bionic and my tab 10.1. The ui is much cleaner and the transitions smoother than the offerings from Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Overall, I love this app. Oh, and for those who complain you need data to read a book, you do know that you can pin the book to offline reading within the app right? Cmon people, google is not stupid.

If apps like these continue in the future there's a chance that they wouldn't make real books anymore and everyone would have to get it digitally. The page margins are HUGE so the text is a thin column down the centre of the screen. I can't see how to adjust it. Kindle seems to be a more mature product. HTC Desire HD.

A decent ereader, it needs so much more. To be able to lock the auto rotation out, for one thing, would be a boon to it's ability. Some would probably like to adjust colors to make it easier to read though I'm happy with the night/day selection. Make some adjustments Google. It will do this app well.

Page flip effect is by far most realistic of any reading app I've tried. Syncing works seamlessly. Font selection is nice. Overall am very happy with the whole experience, especially after the app undergone a major facelift upgrade.

Very difficult to read. Maybe I'm not up to date with technology but I still prefer actual books. Perhaps the ability to change background and text colors or fonts would help. I instinctively try to scroll up and down rather than side to side but I understand the thought process. I won't be purchasing any books, I can't even get through the free ones plus the books are priced ridiculously. It's a good concept, just needs a lot of work to get me on board.

OK first, this is a a great reader (although PDF compatibility would make it even better) Second, its not bloatware, your providers do that. And last, if you REALLY want to remove it (or anything else for that matter) then go to settings/manage apps/[the app you want to get rid of]/and hit disable. Also you can erase the data from there as well... idiots...

Nice Feature: Current Page syncs via web - nice for multiple reading devices!! Switching to kindle solved these deficiencies. Sry google you blew it.

This is a great app, but every time I restart my phone it re-downloads every book in my library. I didn't think anything of it at first but then I started tracking it, it used over 200mb in a matter of minuets. And that was just for 3 books before I stopped it. Other than that its great.

The people complaining they can't uninstall this app should make the same complaints about Google Maps or even Market itself. Rate the app, not the operating system. It's been two years since launch, and I still can't turn pages with the volume button. I'm not buying books if I can't comfortably read them. Every time I open a book, it starts reading it out loud. Can't turn that default off and the menu at the top disappears with no way to get it back other than closing the app. Terrible functionality overall. Seems like a throw in product just because they had to. Needs a lot of work. Galaxy Nexus.

Tested it out with Three Musketeers and had to stop because when it talks back, it can't pronounce the word "the" but reads it aloud by letters. Also its not pleseant to hear a book when the machine talking sounds like a Speak and Spell. There has to be a better option.

I installed this app approximately 6 weeks ago & I've not had a lick of problems with it. Since I ALWAYS have my phone with me, it means I always have a book @ hand to read @ anytime I want. If you can't uninstall it take that issue up with your phone carrier, DON'T blame Google for something that they have NO CONTROL over. This app deserves 5 *'s for what they ARE responsible for, making a good functioning app.

Don't start your digital book collection with this app. Kindle is the way to go. Here you can't highlight or click words to look them up in the dictionary. With Kindle you can. I love Google, but I'm sorry I bought even one book from them. The good news is that Amazon knows how to make sure you get your money's worth. Try reading a free book in each app and you'll see what I mean.

I got used to Aldiko where you just need to slide your finger along the left screen edge to adjust brightness, compared to that Google Books is not convenient enough. plus you can't see the time and battery at all. Needs bookmark, notes, search and the brightness doesn't play nicely with auto brightness setting. Come one Google. This is basic functionality.

not bad not great Not bad reader, not great either. Most annoying thing is that it doesn't remember the page you left off reading, always seems to be 20 pages or so before. Overall Aldiko and nook are better readers.

You should be a able to highlight text w/ 2.2. In kindle You can make notes. No bookshelf view like iOS. Otherwise not lagging or anything. Galaxy S

Dissapointing, has potental. Google no1 search result says "neary 3M free books" but no way to search for free books. 0* for web support forums.

It has no ability to read books not obtained through Google. Very poor choice. I will stick with Aldiko. I can import books.
