Google has updated mobile client of its social network Google+ for Android. The new version is said to come with massive performance improvements across the app, while also packing few new features. For instance, now you can quickly see “What’s Hot!” in your circles and view who +1′d a post or comment. Moreover, stream posts are shortened to fit more per scroll and it no longer jumps to the top for an automatic refresh. Finally, there’s the infinite photos feed in the “From your circles” section. Unfortunately, tablet users won’t get special treatment and Google+ still leaves a ton of white space on Honeycomb devices. Yeah that’s a poor use of the larger screen real estate and we hope that’s something Google will address in some future app update. Google on Wednesday released an updated version of its Google+ app for Android devices, adding a handful of useful features. The free software ties into Google’s social network and works on smartphones or tablets running Android version 2.1 or higher. As of time of this writing, that accounts for 97.9 percent of all Android devices that hit Google’s Android Market in the past two weeks. All the cool functionality of Google’s newish social network, Google+, is available in its tablet app, and its clean presentation makes it very easy to use. Much like its competitors, Google+ lets you connect with friends and colleagues and add them to “circles” based on their relationship to you. Then you can post photos, videos and status updates, and choose which circles can see what information, giving you lots of control over what you share and with whom. Summary: To help you sort through the deluge of apps, here’s a list of 20 tried-and-true Android smartphone apps that are worth your time to download. Another one of the great things about Android (if you’re a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system, which is mostly just interesting, but can be handy once in a while. I’m obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G/4G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. There are a number of really good speed test apps, but my favorite is the Speedtest.net app. It’s generally consistent and it has some of the best graphics and options. I’ve never completely warmed up to the Amazon Kindle e-reader, but I’m a big fan of the Kindle mobile app.

The list is quite large and a good start indeed but the last update aimed to fix notifications but those are still a bit buggy for me. Call me an early adopter if you must, but count me in with the millions of people who have fully embraced Google+, Google's latest attempt at a social network. I am really digging the Circles paradigm, where you're invited to group up your friends and colleagues into separate circles, so you can fine-tune who you choose to keep in touch with. I also find the interface clean and intuitive, and I have to give props to Google+ for being much more privacy-aware than a certain other competitor. One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that spared me a couple hundred bucks I otherwise would have spent on a sat-nav system. The navigation shows a virtual view of the road as I drive, warning me of upcoming intersections and telling me which exit I need to take off the roundabout. I use it for walking, too. A small update to the Google+ Android app, which is quickly becoming one of the top apps I use every day, was released a few minutes ago. The update mostly resolves login issues for those with multiple Gmail accounts (we've heard many of you complain about not being able to sign in because of that). Other additions include a new "spiffy" profile icon and UI polish. Default setting is to share all your info to the world...no privacy, even when I configured my account to disable all sharing via my computer. Only wanted to upload photos to Picasa but now I'm required to switch to Google+. Not cool.

The best thing about the mobile version of G+ is the messenger. It can send messages directly to a phone number or email. Very impressive group chat. And of course video hang outs. The streams are also very impressive. The don't become (spammy) annoying because you can filter the groups to get the feeds you want and block those you don't with great ease. This is a feature that Facebook would greatly benefit from. I highly recommend not only downloading the app for the messenger but also for the news feed

This app requires too much user attention when doing underhood job. It happens "can't find post" very often when internet connection blinks, so you click and click and click on post/comment notification to force G+ to find post. When you uploading big post (with photo) you can't do anything else: if G+ thinks that internet blinks it simply forces you to post again. You can't switch to other application even as G+ will lose your post. So you have to wait until post get uploaded. I rare use this application as it is very gentle and requries too much hand-made actions.

While I agree with Google we should be consolidated under one profile. Many of us G Apps 4 Biz customers have a G+ account for biz. Logging off/on back and forth between accounts causes massive sync and data usage. please add better multi account support

Hangout isn't at all working in my galaxy S II. It says I need to be 18+ which I already am to use hangout. Also more of messenger runs better on Talk. Messages sent from messenger can't be seen on the messenger app but it runs well on Talk. Surprising. A big upgrade is required for Android 4.0 devices.

Overall the app works great but the lack of support for Pages and Hangouts is a massive con to the app. Also the inability to select folders to watch for instant upload is very annoying. Oh and why can't I see nearby on the desktop be very easy for users to just provide an address or a zipcode?

(updated review!) like most google apps, this mobile version presents you with cursory options (nexus1 gbread). you can create and modify circles, but cannot easily organize or edit comments. urls are now thumbnailed! which is a big plus for users seeking a substitute for google reader, tho you only get one thumbnail option. it also seems to crash more often these days. using the desktop website via firefox is much more powerful, but this is quicker if it works for you.

I can't save photos from the Stream or from anyone posting in one of the circles. Irritating. So, why did I just waste my first review of an app EVER on a complaint? Because otherwise, this app "just works". I used it for the first time for an hour without asking "how do i...?" once. Until I tried to save a photo. Sorta like noticing a scratch on a car: no big deal on a used econobox. BIG DEAL on a brand new luxury sedan. Why can't I edit a post after it's been posted like on the desktop version? Huge size for what you can(not) do. Completely messes up sound settings on the phone (makes all sounds barely heard) after plugging headset on hangouts. Randomly getting messages from messenger in Google Talk (would be great if all of them were there). Hangouts is half baked - iPhone friend cannot see or hear me No wall/picture posts on someone's feed (could be a plus or a minus). Can't edit location. I like "what's hot" though

Messenger portion is awful. Sometimes alerts are instant, other times its an hour before new alerts are sent. I've had messages come in over an hour old, even while having the conversation open

Updated to the most recent update. After using hangout and exit the program, my Galaxy S2 volume become very low nearly no sound. Adjusting the volume level still no help. To solve this problem, I've to stop the Google+ process and service that run at the background then the sound volume level will only back to normal. The hangout video quality looks so pixelate (blocky) after update. Not as sharp as the screenshot shown on the page.

I dont understand the point of google+. Too complicated to figure out without some kind of helper or owners manual. Why share with the whole world? Update: 4.25.12 I was a bit partial to facebook but then realized that facebook was geared more to local networks. Most times the app doesn't properly work on my phone, but the google+ is completely compatible. They aren't the same kind of social networks so dont think that its going to be better or worse, just expect it to be different. Fun!

Posts barely show a sentence or two before requiring a tap on a show-me-more hyperlink, and the UI is plainly phone-based with no enhancements or scaling for tablets. Handy in a pinch, but you'll miss how you used to get around on G+ with a browser.

You won't see this until you look at logcat - the app spits insane amount of exceptions. Why can't I edit a post after it's been posted like on the desktop version? Huge size for what you can(not) do. Completely messes up sound settings on the phone (makes all sounds barely heard) after plugging headset on hangouts. Randomly getting messages from messenger in Google Talk (would be great if all of them were there). I very much like Google+ and am anticipating the day that a few more friends migrate from Facebook so that I can delete my Facebook. However this app isnt that great. It lacks functionality compared to the desktop site. For example I wanted to update my profile info the other day to make it easier or friends to find me. But to do this I had to boot up my PC as the mobile app doesn't support this and the desktop site is useless on a mobile device. Also really needs to make much better use of a tablets screen size for things like the pictures section especially.

Yes, I know it takes no CPU or RAM when not using, but it does take storage and get's in my face everytime there is an update and will not get out until I update. WHY??? I've never had any other social network account so there is nothing for me to compare this to. All I can say for a first timer like myself is that its simple to jump right into and use. Great features like "hangouts" makes it fun to socialize with friends and family. If you don't care for the social aspect of this app, then its still a great way to keep up with up to the minute breaking news.

With everything synced on my phone as it is (Galaxy Nexus) this app is too much. Too many messengers, too many photo albums. Just too much. You don't know where your pictures or messages are posting. Very confusing. Every time Google+ updates, it resets all of my settings specifically my notification settings for Google+. This does not make me a happy user of Google+.

Oh, and the new hero images on the profile (the "Cover Photo" or "Scrapbook Photo") would be nice to see on people's profiles too (in the ABOUT section). Tim Cook at his recent Apple iPad2HD event held up examples of Twitter and Yelp on the iPad vs. their counterparts on an Android Tablet to show just how bad some Android tablet apps are. He could have just as easily held up an Android tablet with Google+ on the screen - this is one of the most disappointing Google applications on Android - and I count the phone version in this mix too. Needs a complete, from the ground up redo. Please hire usability designers to craft the interface, Google! --- UPDATE: Google rolled out a new version of Google Plus for Android today, and it still is horrible on tablets. I think the phone interface is lacking too. And if you use Chrome beta on an ICS tablet, you can't even access the desktop version of + (including its new look) - instead, you get a massive whitespace, stretched out version of the phone interface via the browser. Google's really off the ball on this, at least where tablets are concerned.

Love the idea of google+ but right even with the latest update hangout isn't showing as an option for my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 (Infuse). Also the Instant upload, while it uploads recently taken photos w/o an issue, photos I have taken prior to install do not show up in the "photos from your phone" sections when I log into google+ via a desktop though it shows up as uploaded in the app on my phone. Overall those are my only complaints thus far.

I no longer receive notifications when someone adds me to their circles, period. Having to use the small screen on my smart phone, open a browser, navigate to the site, and deal with the cumbersome process of opening multiple tabs so I don't keep losing the notifications window is a major PITA but is now the only way I can see who has added me on G+ when using my phone. Even though I set it only to upload pictures and video while on wifi it somehow used 1.5 gigs of data within a few days. I have also noticed when I disabled the auto synching of g+ and my camera it still pulled data. I like google but am trusting them less.

Tim Cook at his recent Apple iPad2HD event held up examples of Twitter and Yelp on the iPad vs. their counterparts on an Android Tablet to show just how bad some Android tablet apps are. He could have just as easily held up an Android tablet with Google+ on the screen - this is one of the most disappointing Google applications on Android - and I count the phone version in this mix too. Needs a complete, from the ground up redo. Please hire usability designers to craft the interface, Google!

This app works but the notification sounds keep messing up! Recently I've been having songs, (which are on DoubleTwist app) play when I get a G+ notification.......and then I can't silence the song playing unless I go and reset the phone!. Going into DoubleTwist recently played shows nothing of that song I just heard...which is strange. G+ Android app has a lot of issues but it does a decent job which is why I still have it on my phone.

It happens constantly & it's killing the experience of g+. Hopefully it's fixed soon...i have the photon 4G & ability to video chat which works well. Only reason I gave it a 3 is that I needed to install and uninstall 3 times before it would work. Try not multi tasking during install. After single task install works fine.

Nothing inciting users to come back. Since G+'s launch, Facebook developed the Messenger app (which beats G+ Messenger/Huddle in functionality AND features) and the ability to follow users. G+: The way the "+1" button looks like and integration of other Google services. Integration makes it convenient, but convenient to go to a site where there's nothing to do. Easier to manage who to share certain things with...but who is there to share with?

Since the most recent update, this app causes the Sync icon to appear constantly in the notification bar, causing battery drain and the phone to run hot. I checked in 'Settings' >> 'Accounts' and the culprit appears to be the Instant Upload feature in Google+. I halted it, then disabled it in Google+ options, but it kept returning regardless. Had to uninstall the app in order to remedy the problem. Would love to know when this is fixed so I can re-install it.

I was looking for a social network, that i can put the people i follow, the items i use, and a way to post to as many of my followers as i can, but also be in the area i live. Its great for doing as previously mentioned, i didnt realize what i was doing in the beginning, and would like to change the name of my circle group, but still keep the information within the circle, this did not happen. Google seems to make things great, to a point. Their news and weather app, does the same. Good, yet to a point.

Says 8mb...but soon as it is installed it is 12mb. Soon as you use it - it is 17mb. And it grows by the second. For no reason. You also can't opt out of it revealing your location in the "nearby" stream. Hogs my phone even when on SD card. Trying again...but may have to uninstall. Phone keeps telling me no room. Otherwise works okay. You also can't +1 comments on posts only posts.

This apps was flawless. Then came the last "bug fix" update that I should have resisted. Now it freezes or hangs badly and no notifications come through on my Samsung Galaxy Tab or on my Galaxy S2 even when you refresh. Have uninstalled and reinstalled, still nothing. Google+ is clearly the top social app in SHARING OF PHOTOS, utility, aesthetics, convenience and completeness even compared to Facebook which I use so often because of the slowness of friends to move to Google+. Needs better way of sharing content and links (currently only shows URL when it be better to have a separate link showing an image and link info like the desktop site (the Facebook app does this so well)). Unfortunately one of the reasons I use Google+ exclusively was the notifications worked (not well since the latest update until I cleared my cache and set it up again) and instant upload of photos. The instant upload doesn't work anymore. I hope Google gets this fixed soon.

Google did an awesome thing and allowed Google Apps users access to Google Plus but unfortunately the Android App doesn't seem to allow Google Apps users on the network. It signs in but says "our server has returned an error". I've tried signing in on different devices and with a different google apps account. Would be great if this was fixed.

I'm having the "no connection" error whether I have a good 3g or wi-fi connection. download is sometimes invalid and needs to be re-downloaded. Lg Optimus V. UPDATE: If your having a "No connection" error, try installing the app from the android market on your pc. The pc should send the app to your phone. Also try to have a full 3g or wi-fi bar when first opening the app. That's what solved my problem. The app is great!

turned off auto syncing and stopped it from using background data but it still synced data causing me to go over data plan by 500MB!

since my nexus s was updated to 2.3.6 the automatic upload feature works intermittently at best. and when it does, the upload is very very slow. I have a 50/2.5mbps line at home and it takes 30 minutes to upload a 2MB picture. Happy with the rest of the app.

Works well on Motorola Xoom. Notifications for Hangouts could be better. Hangouts can only be started from a computer. You can only join from this app. Check your stream to join already started Hangouts. Good Luck and have fun.

This gives you the option to allow Google to track your movements 24/7, or switch off your phone's tracking capabilities. I find it rather sinister that Google+ won't allow you to simply switch tracking off within the application like all other developers allow you to. GOOGLE IS WATCHING YOU

After seeing the latest version allows installation on the SD card, I quickly installed it, but it still takes over 6 MB of internal memory on the phone, and I'm running out of space. I had to uninstall so that I have sufficient RAM to run other apps.

Love this app, and Google+ in general, but the latest version is no longer compatible with my modded (Android v2.3.5) Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro. It's a shame as it's still compatible on my girlfriend's Mini Pro, who's running the stock v2.1 install that shipped with the phone. Hope this gets addressed in a future release otherwise I'm stuck on v1.0.6.

Great application, but according to Android's battery information I believe this application is keeping my phone awake all the time. As soon as I uninstall, battery information says my phone goes to sleep... This really needs to be fixed before I install Google+ again.

I hope you read this comment Google, i own the Galaxy tab 10.1 and my friend owns the Xoom, fine the G+ is a great innovation in another social networking area of life, Really you own the H.comb OS and the G+ app for your OS and yet you don't have a G+ optimized app for the honeycomb OS, because the app sucks in the OS, my friend isn't using it and am thinking of not using it either again, am using only based version of fb because of this,not sure you really took honeycomb OS seriously Google,no offenses.

I had Google+ installed on my phone when it first hit the market but then it quit working. I thought the best course of action was to uninstall and then re-install but I couldn't find it on the app market from my phone, then when I got on here it says it's incompatible with my phone. Great app, Love it and love the connectivity. To those that recently lost the widget in the app. I did too, but just remembered that Android does not support widgets on apps installed to SD card. Put it back on the phone and your widget can be reinstalled. Yeah!

Has crashed my DroidX running 2.3 twice now. Add another app to the list that aren't compatible with DroidX gingerbread. Funny Google bought Motorola but half the apps on the android platform don't work with the DroidX running gingerbread. U could at least offer the honeycomb update for those of us with another year left before we can update our device. I've been a loyal Motorola customer since the Startac & Timeport, & even before that when my 1st pager was a Motorola in the 90's. This is the 1st Motorola I've ever hated & that hate didn't start until gingerbread was forced down my throat. As for Google+ it still needs a lot of work but I'm sure u know that. Rating a Google app is pointless anyway bc they all seem to keep a 4-5 ★ avg regardless off what the comments imply. Wonder why that is?

App keeps getting better and I love that I can now join a Hangout on mobile, but the decision to completely leave out the ability to start a Hangout from mobile is mind-boggling. Why would you leave out a killer feature like that? Would give it a 4 if it were not for that glaring omission.

Nice app but Google has a really huge issue with bloat on their apps. Also, this update reset my phone and I had to redo settings, including making sure all auto update boxes on Google apps were UNCHECKED. (For some reason, Google apps will get rechecked?!?) Oh, and where did the widget go?!?

This app is pretty much useless without notifications working the way they should, it even works better on the iPhone, rofl. I set the notifications, it tells me settings saved, I go back in, they're all unchecked again. Only messenger notifications work, and not all the time. G+ is awesome, but this app is horrible, better on iOS than your own OS, Google, seriously?

The app is listed at 10MB, but installs at 24MB (before user data). That is just huge! This last update seems to have increased the size dramatically. Other apps on my phone needed to be removed to make room; I am considering dropping the G+ app instead. I love Google+, but this app is not good at the moment.

After seeing the latest version allows installation on the SD card, I quickly installed it, but it still takes over 6 MB of internal memory on the phone, and I'm running out of space. I had to uninstall so that I have sufficient RAM to run other apps.

Love this app, and Google+ in general, but the latest version is no longer compatible with my modded (Android v2.3.5) Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro. It's a shame as it's still compatible on my girlfriend's Mini Pro, who's running the stock v2.1 install that shipped with the phone. Hope this gets addressed in a future release otherwise I'm stuck on v1.0.6.

Close but still issues...Motorola Bionic 1. App won't upload pictures but the widget will (strange???) 2. As others have said, some videos and pictures won't load for viewing 3. GPS location/capture on pictures is not registering on upload People w memory concerns: Load it so it's running off the memory card instead of the internal memory. It still runs.

Learn to delete cache. Settings > Manage Applications > Google+ > Clear cache/data. Don't complain about size when you let it build up from 5.73MB! Good work Google.
