Google is readying a dedicated Gmail app for Apple's iOS, says TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler. Separately, Google formally announced a new look for its Web-based Gmail service, one that introduces the spare look of other Google applications, a revamped search function and improved "density" of the tool's layout. Citing "multiple sources," Siegler revealed the Gmail iOS app effort on his Parislemon tech blog yesterday. The sources say that the app has already been submitted to Apple for review and should be out soon, assuming it gets approved, which Siegler sees as likely. If true, it would mean that iOS users would join their Android counterparts in gaining access to a dedicated Gmail app with some handy bells and whistles. As Siegler points out, Google already offers a Gmail Web page for mobile device users. And of course, iOS users can also set Gmail accounts through the Mail, Contacts, and Calendars feature

What we have here is another blacked out app theme but this time it’s for Gmail. What we have is the latest version 2.3.5 Gmail that has been inverted to be completely black and fits in nicely with the rest of Android, not to mention could help with battery life. Last week I posted something very similar with the Google + App being treated with the same black theme and many users really enjoyed that. One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that spared me a couple hundred bucks I otherwise would have spent on a sat-nav system. The navigation shows a virtual view of the road as I drive, warning me of upcoming intersections and telling me which exit I need to take off the roundabout. I use it for walking, too. Gmail’s web app for Android and iOS platforms has been updated with the ‘Undo’ action that is so popular in the desktop browser version of Google’s mail app. According to Macstories the new Undo feature works with labels, archived and deleted messages as well as conversations that have been moved. Are you bored with the default Gmail theme? I was when I started using Google’s built-in theme support and their ultra-soothing “Cold Shower” theme a while back. The new priority inbox feature was added last month to Gmail and it allows you to put all the important messages at top of inbox. Android: We recently featured an early Gmail update to Android, and today that update was officially released with a few extra features. Not only do you have the larger quick reply buttons in the header, but it also includes limited Priority Inbox support. If you hit Menu and go to the Labels section of the app, you'll notice the "Important" label is now viewable, so you can view messages Gmail has deemed important. This update is also the first Gmail update that isn't connected to an OS update, which means that from now on, further updates will come through the Market like other apps. I often can't see new emails unless I go to All Mail, and even if I do see then in my inbox, I'll view one and the others disappear. It's very annoying. AND I don't get notifications for new emails, either!

On the SGN works perfectly, but it only works in silence, surley the main use for this is in a car and the noise of the car makes the recognision carry on after you've finished speaking. So it is very flawed. Good to show off with though

Normally a very good app that I rely on. I didn't change any settings, but some how they were changed or gmail was no longer synched. I didn't receive my emails for 5 days until I had time to investigate and resynch? Strange, but all fixed now. I do wish that spam that has been reported as such would automatically be sent to a spam folder rather than my inbox.

Everythin was workin fine but after the last update i found one error. Though i receive new mails but it does not show in my inbox. I have to refresh many times n then i receive d mails. It would be helpful if this error is rectified.

First of all, why is there still no zoom ability? My small, yet high resolution screen can handle it, but instead I have to swipe around and look at each part of an email. Which brings me to the most annoying "feature" of this version. When I swipe the screen to go left or right to read my current email, the app thinks I want to move between emails! TURN IT, OFF!

This works great if you want to read your emails with your phone. Not so great for viewing emails. There is no way to zoom in/out the messages, which is a definite need for this sort of viewing.

1. When I'm moving around an email with lots of pictures Gmail regularly moves to the next email and the u.i. seems to lock in this mode for a few moments before I can read the rest of my message. Please allow us to disable this so called "feature" as its frankly badly implemented. 2. Please allow pinch zooming and start in overview. 3. A quick menu such as the one that is enable in settings/labs on the ics browser might work well in Gmail too.

Great useful app but widget is awful. Every day or two i have to remove then re-add as it has frozen i.e. Says you havent read a message that you have read, sometimes the widget just goes blank. Otherwise excellent app with great functionality

Great app, however, push isn't working on Droid Bionic since last update. Please fix ASAP, I live in tornado alley in a podunk town and rely on email notifications for severe weather alerts. It's tornado season therefore it's important that I have an email app with push notifications.

Worked great on my Samsung Sidekick until last update, have to keep refreshing to get emails and sometimes that doesn't even work. Only works after I do a restart tells me I have emails after that never again til next restart. Very annoying!!!!

Also my inbox shows that I have 20 new mails but it doesn't actually display the new messages no matter how many times I manually sync. Good app. 3 stars because there is no pinch to zoom and you cant disable threads. Threads work great on webclient,but suck on android. Im not a fan of either, but webclient is bearable. Threads on gmail for android are terrible

Its counter intuitive and makes users think especially coming from all the other web, mobile web, tablet and phone app versions of this. The only way I can delete messages is reporting them as spam! Unless I am doing it wrong? Just had to go through my trash box and report 1000 emails as spam just to get some more room ! Needs a proper delete button and it also needs a select all button because it took forever!

Have found Gmail to be generally an easy and intuitive email service in both reading and composing messages. I have had problems though since the last update of not being notified of new message in my inbox. Apart from that it's o.k.

Since the last update, the app no longer pushes notifications for new emails. Also a problem since the app was launched, is the message view. The fact that you can't zoom in or out makes it unusable. And last but not least is the bad synching between mobile and computer: every time I delete a message on my computer I get a notification. Annoying and pointless!

With the last update I no longer get my emails pushed to me and when I refresh new emails do not immediately appear in my inbox. For now I have to refresh and search "is:unread" just to check my Gmail.

So all of my devices are running a certain flavor of ICS or Gingerbread and on the devices that are running GB this app is awesome. On my ICS devices this app can be the cause of many headaches. So I can't use this app on my tablet in portrait mode... makes it crash. I cant back out of an email to see my labels... that makes it crash. I can't search for archived emails... this also makes it crash. I am puzzled that even after investing in newer devices with current hardware/OS versions I still get stability issues. You wouldn't think that the least stable app on my Android devices would be from Google.

I really love what Google did with this app. It is so easy to use and navigate, and the sync options are great. I just really wish they didn't require that it remain on the phone's storage. I get why, it's just really limiting. I find myself needing to keep only the most recent email threads, which is usually enough, but I'd love to be able to keep older email, too, without maxing out my phone's storage.

Usually pretty happy w/gmail but discovered a major glitch when replying to emails- they dont send. At all. Once I send reply emails theyre not in sent or outbox folders, they either stay in drafts if saved or just disappear completely. VERY frustrating! Hoping someone will notice and fix this SOON! :(

Great app, but since android 1.0 this bug has existed. When two or more accounts are defined, and you are browsing mail in one account and get a notification in another. If you open the notification and then click the back key it takes you to a list of labels for the first account but you can't click any because it still thinks its one the second account. As a result you have to hit back 2-5 times to get to a usable menu. Very aggregating.

Desperately need a "select all" button and I wish that deleting actually deleted. It just marks it with the Trash label. You need to use web app to delete. Also the extra IMAP folders are just annoying. Why do I need two trash folders, on of which just sends it to the second and the other can't REALLY be emptied. Yahoo! Has a MUCH better interface and actually does what it says its doing.

Need to support S/MIME encryption and digital signature!!! Bad message formatting comparing to iOS mail app. Not obvious labels handling. I use Android phone, iPhone with google sync and Thunberbird through IMAP on desktop and have a lot problems with correct deleting the messages from all devices.

Constantly sends new-email notifications to my Android phone, even when I haven't received any new emails. It sends me notifications on my Android when I delete and send emails in a browser on my laptop. Irritating!!!! Also doesn't sync instantaneously....when I DO receive a new email in my laptop browser, the apparently doesn't notify until more than five minutes later.

I'm on my second DROID. I have always gotten my email notifications simultaneously as I received an email on my computer. Suddenly they've stopped. I don't know what the problem is, but the failure of a smartphone function so basic as timely email notifications will send me scurrying over to iPhone land so fast it'll make Google's head spin. If this doesn't fix itself in same magic way that it screwed itself up, I'll have an iPhone before the week is up.

You can't delete emails from your phone. Once they are in your trash that is as far as you can go. That basically renders your trash folder pointless.

Works superbly except that it lacks a very important feature - zoom. If they could make zooming work like dolphin browser it would be great. Pinch to zoom and double tapping paragraphs of text zooms and resizes the paragraph to fit the screen.

Well...if your email is important, stay away from this app. I am in the process of buying a house and time is important, when you don't get your emails until days after they were sent it causes problems. In my case I lost a house I was bidding on because I did not respond to an important email that I was waiting for and didn't show up until 2 days after it was sent. Just use the web and bookmark the gmail page for your emails instead if your email is important!

God, I used to love goggle. This one app has made me hate them. Keep asking for them to fix this email app. Everyone with a droid has to have a Gmail acct. This app shouldn't be used by itself. It never shows ALL messages. Compare your inbox on a PC to the phone app. If you refresh, it will give you varied results EACH time you click it. I'm currently ooking for a better android email app. This bug has been screwing with me for 3 months. I've reinstalled and done all the "tricks" And... the HELP section is terrible.

Asus Transformer Prime with ICS App would be amazing except it constantly freezes and crashes. Usually 3-4 times in a row, then it works for a while, then starts all over again... Reported problem a dozen times with no response. App works great on honeycomb phone.

Not working well at all on my ICS tablet. While its loading new mail it constantly crashes, usually about 4 times in a row. After that it works alright for a short time but still crashes every few minutes. Really painful when typing a long email or viewing a lot of emails. I've also had it randomly remove files I have attached to emails. When it works its a great app, but it just doesn't work much at all since about early march. Also, why still on pinch to zoom or at the least auto fit to screen.

Asus Transformer Prime with ICS - it works great, it responds fast, it's basically like being on a laptop or pc. 5/5 because it does what it's supposed to do, and it does it smooth, and it's very easy to use.

Love Gmail and most of the Google apps for Android. But is it really too much to ask for all the widgets for the Google made apps to be the same size on a 10in honeycomb tablet? Gmail is longer on the bottom than Google Voice, that's longer on the top than Calendar, etc., etc. Can you just have a team meeting or something and decide on a standard size top to bottom? I still am an Android fanboy, but it's little touches like this that always seem to be missing from Android, and always accounted for on the fruit phone. If your goal is to have Android inspire the type of loyalty and passion that the other OS does, then you're going to have to start picking up the slack on these minute details. My 2c. Oh, and would you please stop forcing Priority Inbox on us on a tablet? I turned it off months ago on Gmail desktop but can't turn it off here at all. This app sucks. It does have some good features, but it doesn't notify you when new emails come in. I have mine set to notify me but it never does. It isn't capable if even updating itself. So when I open it it takes 20 minutes to upload new emails. It also does not show all inbox emails. JUNK

It looks like there are sync settings in "Accounts and Sync" under Settings that allow you to sync certain things for your gmail account(s). Mail didn't have a check in the box for syncing. I checked the box and now it works correctly again. I am using CM7 on Vibrant.

It does a fairly good job. It would feel more complete if users could zoom OUT from the default view when looking at an email. Don't try and cram it all onto the screen. Let us zoom out to look at it in the proper perspective.

Why is it that you can select text in an email but you cant have the app read it to you. If Google want devs to make android apps more accessible, they should start with their own apps. Being able to select font sizes is great, but sometimes it is still too small!

Gmail for android is an excellent app; fast and simple, and gets the job done. I do, however, think the UI needs some love. The mobile gmail website is much more user friendly; being colorful, easier to navigate thru tabs at top. I wish the devs could merge the wonderful performance and functionality of this app with the simplicity and beautiful UI of the mobile website :)

This does what it says, but lacks a very basic function: zoom...I get a lot of HTML emails and it sucks that there is no zooming whatsoever, so I have to pan to view it. This is on Nexus S 4G (known problem as posted on many forums). For people saying why don't you just use a different app, the GMail app is the only one that allows for Push through email for gmail (thanks to Google for restricting this). Tempted to forward gmail emails through yahoo account to use yahoo's push through app that has zoom...

I have been experiencing sync problems on my X..The mail does not sync and clicking on the refresh button also does not do anything. It fetches the mail at its will. Its really frustrating. Have been experiencing this since about a week and a half now. Loved Gmail app prior to that.. but now it really sucks... The Gmail app supports label-specific shortcuts, but those shortcuts don't indicate how many unread messages a specific label has. Google plugged a security exploit (in version 2.3.5) that previously allowed third-party developers fill this niche. I can't be upset with Google for making their already-solid Gmail app more secure, but in the process, they essentially blocked other developers from providing a third-party solution. That would be fine, had they not also neglected to create a widget that replicated this feature. They have bundled a widget with the app, and it's very clean... but it also includes message previews, which I don't really want displayed on my launcher. Also, it seems that the current widget only supports the Inbox -- not specific labels. (I have a lot of filters in place, some of which label and archive messages before they ever hit my Inbox.)

What the ____ happened? I see other people complaining about the same thing i am: Sync stopped being automatic. Also, If I go to accounts and sync now, to try and troubleshoot, it says on bottom of screen: "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." But never actually is. If i manually refresh from app (Menu button, then refresh) it will sync manually. I have hotmail app installed, and am considering making this primary app. Only thing i'm worried is if my google calendar sync is working too or if that was broken with this? I am not sure.

I changed my gmail password using my laptop, because I found out my ex was using my account. Now my gmail on my phone won't sync with the new password. I have tried clearing the cache, I looked up this unlock captcha solution that had worked for tons of others with the same issue, I restarted my phone, added a new account, reset everything... I really don't know what else to try!

I have multiple gmail accts, but only the 1st I set up gives notifications of new mail. Doesn't matter which I was viewing last, & all have same settings. Useless for other accts. Also, newest mail in inbox is several days old. Have to go to All Mail to see new mail. ?? App sucks.

Everything works beautifully, its very quick. Just one thing I can't seem to do is apply filters in the search box e.g. "is:unread" to search for all unread messages as you can on the web.

You can't clear your trash bin from the app itself....what kind of bs is that.....to delete trash, you have to actually use a browser either on phone or desktop to delete the trash bin....I thought google would have done this automatically...other phones do, but not Android....I have a galaxy s2....PLEASE FIX THIS GOOGLE!!!

The HTC mail application works just fine however, if you are a Gmail user, this interface works as well and with a cleaner interface. The emails look better in the display that the HTC text-message layout alternative. Easy to star emails and browse to different folders especially sent items if you needed to check something or re-send one. Highly recommended.

Very good, although app 2 sd support would be nice. A while back the app was failing to sync, I realised however this was due to a lack of memory availiable on my phone. If your having troubled I would suggest you clear the data associated with the app.

Needs to update!! I need to be able to send attachments such as word docs, can only send images with gmail. I would rather use gmail but have to use hotmail for sending word docs. Upgrade gmail to be able to send all types of attachments and it will be prefect!!

I would think that Google would really want to make sure that this app, more than any other, is absolutely perfect. It isn't. It's not bad though. The most frustrating thing about it for me is the very poor text selection capability and the fact that addresses are not clickable (at least not always). A close second is that I have to scroll sideways to read large html emails, i can not zoom in and out. What is up with that?! I think gmail worked better on my iPhone 3G than on my Android Incredible!

Google are trying to take over. Too many privacy concerns, asks for too many details etc then they stop you if you don't want to answer. At least Microsoft let you opt out of submitting details. Used to be a big fan Google rather than Microsoft or Apple money makers but now Google just want your details, you knows what for.

I must have really lucked out, because I'm not experiencing any of the issues others are having, and I have v.2.3.5.2. Emails are constantly being pushed out and I can send out professional emails and attachments. Very good app so far.

I have to say that I loved the app before the new update! I am a college student and we use gmail for the .edu mail system, and it was working great till this new update. Now my mail does not go to my phone like it used to and it is no longer effective for me to keep up with my classes and important materials that I could relay on for the past year! And evern if I go into the app manually I still miss mail. I sent myself several emails yesterday and still don't know what to do! I hope they fix can fix this!

At first I loved this ap, love my GMail, but it is getting worse all the time. Sometimes the primary account won't refresh. Drafts keep being saved automatically, so I have a new draft saved for every new line of an email! Messages I haven't deleated disappear on the phone, but not on the desktop. It seems random too, so I can't work around it. I hope it gets fixed, or I will be jumping ship! Desire HD

Gmail was great on my blackberry. Could delete messages straight frm device. Cnt on android. On bb could choose to click on archived mail, on android have to search through all mail. That's crap. App is just right for its purpose. I find I actually PREFER checking my email on the app sometimes, versus checking it on my computer! I can add a star to messages that need further attention & just look at those messages when I'm back at my desk or home (ie: if I need to follow a link, or draft a lengthy reply). Seems to be allowing me to actually spend LESS time working on email!

Good app, but it has a very annoying bug. When I mark a conversation unread through the app, after a few minutes the app "discovers" it and notifies that new email has arrived. In fact I'd expect the app not to notify of a new email even when the user marks a message unread in the web interface (the app knows that it has already seen this email before), but when the user marks it unread in the app itself - a fix is a must.

My wife has an iPhone and I have a Sprint Epic 4G Touch.. we compare what each other can and cannot do.. so far I have been able to do EVERYTHING she can and most of the time better.. the only thing this mail client does not do that she can is if someone emails her a section from an XLS with dates/times..she is able to click on it and click an event.. basically add to her calendar... i cant... wish i could though.. so still giving 5 starts but hey developers.. there is a feature request!!!!

Prime example of how Gmail should work on a mobile device. You can do most of the things you do on web interface on small screen without any hiccup. Best part is that you know it will keep on improving as Gmail system on a whole improves because it is made by Google. So you never worry about dev being slow or abandoning the app. Would love to see custom colors for labels as they are set on web interface. I know it is a lab feature but it comes handy when there are a lot of labels. Keep it up!

Nice app. Liked the PUSH notification a lot. App requires minimum Androind 2.2 then why it does not allow the app to be moved to SD? Eats up almost 5MiB of space and its very precious on phones like HTC Desire having only 512MiB of phone/app memory. Guys PLEASE PLEASE PROVIDE OPTION TO MOVE TO SD CARD. Just put this magical attribute in your manifest android:installLocation="auto" and earn 5 start :)

First the stupid update disabled download attachments my touch 4g Great update. Not. Now I can't download any attachments, even with the free Download Anything app on my touch 4g. Uninstalled all updates and worked fine. Tried to check in January 2012 if they resolved the issue and it is selective in the files it allows me to download. App sucks

I use this handy application a lot, & really the only issue I have is that it often needs to be refreshed a few times to get new emails to show up. (Also-- a couple of times, the emails I deleted via Android phone showed up when logging in through a computer.) Otherwise, an excellent app.

Great, solid app. Haven't crashed yet after 9 months daily of use on HTC Sensation. Suggestion: Please include a common inbox function in next release. Right now, I have to manually switch to look at individual gmail accounts' inbox to access email. I would like to be able to read new emails across multiple gmail accounts in one inbox and for changes made in that inbox (i.e. delete) to be reflected in the specific corresponding gmail account. This is a function iOS mail has, and that I've missed since switching to Android. Please include soon. Thanks and keep innovating!

After a recent update, the app shows up a new mail notification in the status bar even if there has been a change to the inbox, such as, if I open a new mail or delete a mail using my desktop. This is really annoying! I'd like the mobile gmail app to show the new mail notification only when I actually receive a new mail, not when a mail gets deleted etc.

Why is the gmail signature different from the signature file setup in Gmail when sending from gmail's android app? I sent up a signature file in Gmail on my PC yet that signature file is not used when sending an email via the gmail app on my android device. (It uses only a text based sig file that I have to re-setup. It would be great if the gmail app would simply use all of the setting from our gmail account including the Signature file.

There's no option to turn off the conversation thread view in the gmail app for android. This threading view has caused me to miss important inbound email, and also to forward inappropriate portions of the thread. Google provides an on/off setting for this within the web-based gmail account, but the android app does not use this setting. I would give 5 stars if not for this issue. But, conversation threading makes this an unusable email client for me. Bad Google.

Yes agree I have been having problems with gmail since the 2.3.5.2 update. I didn't realize at first that this was the problem as I would also get an error message low space on my HTC DROID Incredible. Once I uninstalled the update all was back to normal. Gmail wouldn't sync although I could see the number of pending emails they wouldn't sync until I uninstalled the update. I saw there were issues with 2.3.4 as well and it appears similar problems with this one too!

Good for reading only! Doesn't sync. On tablet u can't archive a bunch of messages @ same time. Using Gmail on computer is far easier than on tablet.

Have had lots of problems with the gmail updates lately. I've been using gmail for years now and like it, but I can not get the emails to appear timely on my droid 2. It seems to get worse with every update. I thought updates were supposed to get better? Would like to see emails hit my phone faster and the ability to delete trash email on my phone. Hope those are the next updates.

If I could I'd give it half a star rating. While the app does a good job of managing email to one gmail account, it will not connect to server to add another account. The account associated with the app was made up on the spot by the phone salesman at Best Buy when the phone was purchased and is never used nor is it wanted. I have another gmail account that I would love to associate with this app but it won't work. This also makes the google plus app useless to me. I F----n Hate this.

Nice to have gmail on an Android phone... but kinda expect that, seeing that both are Google products. I have multiple accounts, and had a 3 party widget that would show the unread email count for each account. After the last update, Google "fixed" that, it no longer works, and the "update" doesn't have that capability, no widget, weak.

Seems to sync properly only if I am using priority inbox. Otherwise, normal inbox does not show new messages. I do not want to use priority inbox, but have to sync that folder in order to get my normal inbox messages. Please fix or make users like me know that that's what needs to be done.

Google just broke my homepage. By disabling 3rd party apps in 2.3.5, they made it impossible to see at a glance how many new e-mails I have in my inbox. If they would make their own widget that did this it wouldn't be so bad but they don't . The other features are things they should have had a long time ago and it makes no sense why they don't.

Inconsistent menu: while is archive a popup-menu action when selecting conversations but not "mark as read" ? The contextual actions for emails (the top bar that follows the scroll) is too webapp-y, doesn't feel native Android at all. Ugly. I expected more from Google for its flagship GMail experience by now.

I carry two devices that I exclusively use over wifi, & that both consistently fail to sync, and no common fix works for me. Even a manual sync often fails, updating the unread count, but not displaying emails unless I specifically search for them. The only time I've EVER gotten a new email notification on my phone was when I took it to the US & bought a SIM for it for the first time. Perhaps more troubling, there's no easy way to just see unread messages. Even searching for label:unread doesn't work.

The last update seems to have solved most problems with outgoing reply messages automatically cutting off the threaded text. However, there is still some room for improvement. Copying and pasting is still a pain. Also, it needs a native homescreen icon unread count number. This latest gmail app update seems to have disabled that capability for third party apps, widgets, and launchers.

Where is zoom in/out? Html e-mails are a pain to read without zoom out. Deleted draft messages show up in the inbox conversation threads?!?!?!? This is a well documented bug that dates back to 2008, tons of forum posts, still no fix!! Can't delete a single message but deletes the whole thread?!?!? The sync works really well, that's about it. I couldn't care less about the labels or the priority inbox.

The 2.3.5 update puts new restrictions on the gmail database that breaks widgets, like GMail Label Notifier and Pure Messenger Widget. Danged update basically broke apps that I use throughout the day, every day. And it broke it without offering alternative options.

Would be good if it were more like the iPhone email app for text sizing. Small text on a small screen is NOT good! Since the latest update the Gmail app no longer properly syncs with Gmail on the web. Specifically, if you read, archive or delete emails on your Gmail app, those emails will still appear unread, and in your inbox within Gmail on the web. This did not happen prior to the update. With the synch restored this is easily a 5-star app.

Wish for more features Please make it so that you can empty the spam email folder and trash folder without having to go and select each mail and delete them one by one. Also, make it so that you can create a label and modify filtering rules and other settings from inside the app. I would also like to be able to tap on the To button, and then go and select someone in the contacts list, which I cannot do from the tablet edition of this app. I don't understand why I have to keep going back to the web to get basic functionality.
