When it comes to travel and local apps, Android is a step ahead of other mobile operating systems. The integration of Google Maps plus free navigation is a bonus for Android users, while often-updated popular apps like Kayak, TripIt, GasBuddy and FlightTrack continue to grow in popularity. But we’ve seen a number of new kids on the block this year, so without further ado, here are five of the best Android travel apps we came across in 2011. Skyscanner is an app that’s great for booking flights from your Android device. While other travel offerings let you select hotels, rental cars, vacation packages and so on (and that’s certainly valuable for many consumers), Skyscanner keeps things straightforward by focusing solely on flights. Once you do a simple search, Skyscanner lets you get more picky, narrowing down all possible airlines, departure times and airport connections so you can choose wisely. Well-received by

If you’ve been paying attention this morning, you’re perhaps somewhat aware of a program Microsoft has in place called Mobile Acceleration Week (part of its BizSpark program), where 12 hand-picked startups can access hands-on support and training to build compelling apps for the Windows Phone platform. MAWs happen all over the world all year long, but I was lucky enough to catch up with some of the participants of New York’s Mobile Acceleration Week, and was pretty pleased with the apps I saw. Microsoft gives each startup 60 days to push the app to market, so don’t get too excited and start hunting through the Marketplace. You won’t find what you’re looking for just yet. But considering that today’s theme (at least in my world) seems to be the state of Redmond’s mobile app platform, I thought it’d be worthwhile to give you a look at where the Marketplace is headed,

Imagine this grim scene: You have a three-hour layover at LaGuardia and the unenviable choice between the Auntie Anne's or the sports barwhich option is least apt to inflict irreversible damage on your stomach lining? With GateGuru (for Android) you can use your smartphone to save yourself the plight of past LaGuardia travelers. User-submitted reviews help you ferret out the best grub, tips enable you to spot a deal on that day-old pretzel, and airport maps and checkpoint wait times will spare you from extending your tenure. Add integration with social networking sites for real-time status updates (to satiate your friends' schadenfreude) and tie-ins to KAYAK and Tripit for flight details, and GateGuru proves a gracious travel companion in the least hospitable airport. Credentials, Connections, and High Flyers Of the app's four main modulesTrips, Account, High Flyers, and Airportsyou'll probably spend most of your time taxying the Airports section, but that

If uncomfortable naps, over-priced snacks and boring magazines come to mind when you think of airport entertainment, you might not be getting the most out of your traveling experience. The GateGuru app for your Android phone aims to give users a better understanding of everything that's available at the airport you're spending time at. That way you can locate the best food, shopping and service options. For instance, the app lets you know what meal options are available in pre-security areas or places you won't be able to easily get to when you're waiting to board your plane. Obviously, this app isn't promising you an exciting culinary adventure, and clearly the airport isn't any kind of shopping mall, but it does let you know what's nearby so you can make well-informed decisions about how to spend your time and money during your layover. What's especially handy is the fact that the

Android proves a promising crossroad for app developers expanding beyond iOS. Path has finally introduced its photo-sharing app to the Android Market with an open beta version. A couple of familiar apps were also upgraded this week: Skype added video chat and Foursquare added notifications ahead of iOS users. Path, a California-based startup, has taken a different approach to mobile photo sharing. It’s all about privacy, limiting you to 50 of your nearest and dearest friends. The idea is to have a controlled sharing experience, initially restricting photo-sharing only within its app. Broader sharing capabilities for porting photos to Twitter has been added to the iOS version through an extra app called With, but this week’s Android launch is an early version with fewer features. Add location and friend tags to your photo uploads, with emoticons to indicate how you feel about a posted picture. You can also chat with friends

GateGuru has made its way onto Android, bringing with it a sort of mashup of Foursquare and travel apps such as Tripit and FlightTrack. When you first launch GateGuru, you'll get a long list of airports, with their three-letter abbreviation. You can flick through the list, or type to drill down through it. The list is long, but not complete. Your airport might not be listed. The GateGuru folks say they're adding airports all the time. Airports that are on the list have pretty comprehensive guides, however. For example: Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has five concourses. And GateGuru's got a map of the entire complex, checkpoint wait times, and breakdowns of the shops, restaurants and services that are available there -- plus photos. For the social aspect, you can check in at various airport locations, leave tips and reviews, and ear points for doing so. GateGuru also serves as a decent travel

Very US focused, missing many major international airports. No or few terminal maps. Not all that useful in it's form.
Michael M
An airport app MUST have detailed terminal maps. The ones in this app are useless. Uninstalling.
Xavier
the yelp of airports. great app
Amalia
Itinerary management, maps (the guy below is just stupid), security wait times, and reviews of everything. This app saved my life
I'm not interested in plowing through 200 stranger's reviews of Concourse B of O'Hare. App doesn't seem to have anything else to offer.

Only used it for the Houston airports. Most recent update to security wait time was 77 DAYS go. Gives reviews of airport restaurants, but who cares?!

GateGuru has a lot going on and much of it is done well. Integration with Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare all work well; TripIt integration can be wonky, unfortunately. It relies on crowdsourcing for information about security line delays, so as the userbase grows, that should continue to grow in accuracy/timeliness. Interface is smooth and looks good.
Andy
Seems to work fine here in Vegas. Got a list of what's available to eat. Wish you could text someone info.... maybe it's in a paid version?
Nathan
Great for travelers unfamiliar to new airpots. Five stars when Des Moines Int'l Airport is included...
Guisun
It's nice, but too big. Uninstalling

Adam

Dana
Great App! Absolutely essential for any traveler -- much better than available alternatives!
Mark
Kills the battery. Big time. Syncs non stop. Unless you force close. Crazy needs fixed. Asap.
Joel
Tripit integration not working Could not integrate with tripit, other than that, looks like great app can't wait to try.
Scot
Looked useful, but at 11MB, too big for my near-full N1. Why not store data files on the SD card?
Yas
Not a lot of data Nice looking app, but not much data, esp in Europe... many international airports not listed
King Ams
Very poor selection of airports, very US centric application.
alan
Mediocre Selection of Airports Very US centred app, basic selection of European Airports, next to no Asian or Australian airports
Arden
Great app it can only get better
Sam
Great App but Crashes when tried to sync w Tripit I am a frequent traveler and use Trip It for my plans, i wanted to use it since beta, but TripIt Integration has never worked on any of my phones.
David
Sync Bug This application will run the Sync service (check Running Services) non-stop until you force stop it. Needs to be fixed. Otherwise, decent app, looks quite useful.
Derek
Awesome app! For anyone who travels this is a must. Works great on Android! !!!
