== INSTRUCTIONS ==
After installing Svox Classic TTS, enable it as follows:
1. Go to Android Settings -> Voice Input & Output -> Text-to-Speech settings.
2. Activate SvoxClassic at the bottom of the screen, then select SvoxClassic as the Default Engine.
3. Open Svox Classic TTS app to browse the voice catalog and download a trial/full voice for your language.
== NOTES ==
1. Google Navigation requires that the Text-to-Speech voice matches the phone language. You can change the phone language in Android Settings -> Language & keyboard -> Select language .
2. On Android 2.1 and earlier, only some apps, like Google Translation, support changing voices.

I might not think Siri is all that and a bag of chips, but I've got to hand it to Apple for one thing: it sounds good. Listening to the articulate, smooth-talking Siri, I couldn't help but think how archaic Android's own text-to-speech sounded. Compare Android's voice to Siri and you're left with the inevitable comparison to the Speak and Spell. During one of my stints in the Android Central podcast chat, a reader suggested I give the SVOX Classic TTS Engine a shot, and boy, am I glad I did. Now the text-to-speech on Android is more than tolerable, and that's saying something. When you install SVOX, you can't really do much in terms of text-to-speech. What you can do, however, is browse more than 25 languages, and once you've chosen a language, see the available voice packs for that language. Languages are sorted by a country's flag at the top

The speech quality is much better than the Android standard 'Pico' engine. Sometimes sounds almost natural, almost always sound acceptable. When it gets a word wrong you can define a correction but this is hard to use. Sometimes speaks the name of a punctuation character instead of just pausing. Engine is free but you pay per voice; I bought two so far. Don't be put off by the privacy warning; Android displays that for ALL add on TTS apps.

Installed svox+victoria and ALL voice aboard my razr maxx (android version 2.3.6) stopped working entirely. Hasn't worked since. svox+victoria seemed to install ok & gave no errors. in steps listed as "how to use?" - 1st failure was noted at step 9 - "listen to example" (nothing) ... Tried back/forth to pico/svox per step 10 - nothing. Tried running app and when clicking on arrow (play button) to hear sample from app it seemed to play, there was pause then square stop button changed back to arrow play button - but made no sound. Rechecked all settings volume etc. went back over all FAQs here -nothing suggested worked. Tried multiple uninstalls/reinstalls with victoria, demos, other voices & other demos - still nothing. Tried step 11 - nothing. Tried uninstall then reinstalled forcing it to use SD card instead of internal memory - nothing. Tried multiple reboot of razr phone -nothing works not svox not pico nothing!!! --- it seems that while I paid $2.99 it was instead worth - nothing! - No, that's wrong. Before I paid my money, my voice (pico) was working - now it's not! svox is worth less than nothing it broke my phone! please reply with suggestion or refund...

Works well. Better than ivona which seems to have issues on play back. This plays well from all apps. Natural voice sound.

The voice is pleasent and clear. However, every "Mr." is read a an end of sentence, and every hyphen is read "hyphen", which break the text flow so badly that it's much harder to follow it. If it was fixed or made free, I'd give it 5 stars. But as it is, no way.

After much screaming, gnawing & gnashing of teeth and wanting to throw the phone across the room I finally got it functioning properly. My biggest issue was downloading the SVOX US English voice... it would not install, the data stream would be interrupted regardless of my internet connection which it needed. Then a light bulb clicked....I disabled Juice Defender and it finally installed, albeit slow as molasses, but it did. I also discovered in order to make it do what it is suppose to do, ie: text to speech for reading texts out-loud while driving Juice Defender needs deactivated for that as well. Apparently it disrupts the data controls in order to save battery life, that is unless you have the paid version, which I do not. So for those who are seeming to have difficulty with this try this on your phone and see if that helps. And probably not just for Juice Defender, any program that disrupts your data stream could have an effect on this. This worked for me, I have a Droid Pro running Android version 2.3.4. Good Luck!

I have had no problems installing or making this default no problems with Victoria so far so good. Only downer I have noticed is the lack of creative voices such as yoda, darth vader, willow the wisp for a few random examples tomtom got you beat there sorry

very disappointed in this voice speech it doesn't read out my text messages as my voice speech, call announcer program does. plus my uk english voice you do not have to pay 4 in english voice. I'm not paying 3 dollars for 1 voice speech when I get in free with call announcer. I'm uninstalling immediately this program...

Voices are great (though I wish they'd release an all-voice pack at a discounted price). Downside: voices download data after being installed, and don't use OBB, so the refund window is non-existent depending on your data speed.

Seems to crash while using Google NAV, the main reason people purchase this app. Anyway, once it crashes it will start reading from a XML file saying all sorts of crazy things! Good thing it doesnt start reading Browser History with wife in the car, LOL!!! >>>joke<<< ONE STAR UNTIL FIX, at least acknowledge the issue, seriously!

I recommend that you also install moon reader pro. the experince of having moon reader`s text to speech function with an SVOX voice installed is totally awesome! now I can exercise and get other things done while still being able to consume the media that I used to have to sit down anb read in order to consume. I used to think that this kind of powerful application was only available are using a laptop or desktop computer. now I can listen to books in red with a natural voice on my phone.

If you make this app your default voice app (which you have to do for it to work) it collects all voice information, PERSONAL DATA, PASSWORDS and CREDIT CARD INFORMATION! I have screenshots to prove it. Uninstall immediately! I have. Two weeks free voice trials is no consolation for this massive invasion of my privacy.

SVOX doesn't appear in my default engine choices after installation. No error messages, it's just not available for use. Does anyone have this working on a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone? Android 2.3.5

I use w/ezPDF to hear my work aloud by w/o bothering my husband to read it to me. Victoria is great, and I'll def be buying her voice. WARNING: ' and " are bugs w/this TTS. Update should seriously consider an auto-addition to correction dictionary. Until then add a correction as follows: Input = ' (the code only) / Pronounced as = ' (the symbol only). For " Input = " (the code only) / Pronounced as = " (the symbol only). Don't forget to set Svox as default and override system TTS.

Older version of the program and the voices (2.x.x) which you can find on warez sites work much better. I bought the program (3.x.x), but returned to the cracked version, because it still works. There is some problem with language switching. I use Enhanced SMS and caller-id, and it use to be able to read english text with english voice and hungarian text with hungarian voice. but now the switching capability is broken. Unfortunatelly there is an update notification in 2.x.x, which makes it a little more difficult to use. SVOX, please roll back to the old version but without the update notification.

Crackling sound can be heard when talking. Using sgs2 and tried changing settings. Ivona sounds much better. Pronunciation is crap too, im English, trust me, don't rely on this to learn!

Same problem as Asa. The engine speaks aloud punctuation characters. Also, if you have to edit a correction, the engine will NOT do a save overwrite. It saves the edit to a correction separately to the original correction.

Better than PICO with reasonable voice file sizes My SVOX uses the US English Grace Voice, which sounds more natural and pleasant than the default PICO TTS. SVOX lets users adjust the pitch, speed and volume of voices. I made Grace Voice sweeter for my pretty Speaktoit Personal Assistant, (i.e., a Siri clone with customizable avatars.) Other users noted that IVONA TSS sounds better than SVOX, but IVONA voice files are GIGANTIC: Kendra US English is 250+ MB (!!?) and cannot be moved to SD card. SVOX Grace is about less than 20 MB and installed to SD card.

Excellent voices, shame about the customer service Brilliant, clear and the standard that voices should be measured against. However, when there was a problem, all attempts to get support from the developer got no response whatsoever! Instead of letting us know that there was a known problem with some devices and that they were working on a fix, they let us continue to spend hours on trying to overcome the error, including reformatting my SD card and factory-reseting the phone. Shameful communication.

Even though the 3.0 upgrade has brought some subtle choppiness and quality loss in the voice packages, SVOX is still one of the best TTS engines on the market. Voice quality in Ivona is superb (easily the best on the market), but until they improve their engine- SVOX will reign supreme. I never used the paid voice packages prior to the update, so my rating does not reflect the claim that some have made about having to re-purchase. If that is the case, SVOX should fix that asap.

Not usable in Android 3.1 This app installed fine on my Asus Transformer, but when I purchased a voice and installed that, it force closed when I hit the "Go to tts settings" button. I have the latest firmware installed as well. It's really too bad, I wanted TTS in ezPDF Reader, my transformer is a great e-reader, but lacks TTS. The voices did sound great on a side note.

Whatever happened in the update, Google Nav no longer recognizes UK English as an installed voice. It directs me to install one. Worked fine before.

Use to work. Now, in order for it to work, you must buy the language. So the engine is free, but you still have to pay.

Does not work on Google maps navigation, reads the whole xml. The main reason i got it was to replace that annoying voice.

I like the better voice, but it does not work correctly. Instead of reading the navigation, it read the whole xml. Froyo on Evo.
