Android this week: Chrome updated; MWC previewed; free 50 GB from Box
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOm - Posted Sat, 25 Feb 2012 13:44:53 UTC +00:00
Google Chrome for Android arrived earlier this month and this week, it saw its first software update. The browser for Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 4.0, devices gained a few new features, some bug fixes and availability in more countries; the complete list of supported regions is here. But some handset owners aren’t happy with the update because the browser no longer works on their device. In the software release notes, Google points out that “Compatibility checks to ensure system prerequisites for Chrome are met.” The browser is specifically made to run on Android 4.0, which at this point only runs officially on two commercially available devices here: the Galaxy Nexus smartphone and the Asus Transformer Prime tablet. Handset owners using custom Android 4.0 ROMs on other phones are experiencing problems: After this update, the browser no longer runs for them. The issue can’t be specific to all custom ROMs, however. Read More

Box has a habit of giving users some free storage to users but to celebrate its updated Android app, the company is giving a whopping 50 GB of free storage to any Android user who activates an account within the next 30 days. Box is in the red-hot cloud storage space and this offer will make it more of a competitor to Dropbox when it comes to consumers but the company is quick to point out that it easily stands out from the crowd by offering strong enterprise and collaboration support. You and I may not really care that Box enables business-ready provisioning but you can be sure that the CIO at your company does and it says that 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies are already using Box. But even if you never use it for work, that 50 GB of storage will be yours for free for the Read More

Apps are oh so much fun, and they make the Android experience so much better. If you have a hard time while searching the Android Market, you won't want to delay any further. Hit the jump and let's take a look at what we got this week for you. Spotify Just launched in the US and I was lucky enough to nab an invite. If you're not familiar with the service, Spotify gives you instant access to millions of tracks (and music you actually listen to!) that you can stream for free (with ads) on your computer. They have subscription plans that remove the ads and allow playback on other devices, and I decided to spring for the premium subscription ($10/month) so I could get it on my phone. The app is easy to navigate and looks slick on my phone. All the basic features from the desktop client are Read More

The cloud sector had an interesting run this week, rising in rank in the Android Market. The cloud has always been an integral part of mobile apps, but growing consumer demand is pushing the envelope on features, social networking integration and more. Here are this week’s top Android apps. Sony launched an e-reader in the Android Market this week, giving more options for bookworms. Simply named Reader, this free app grants access to an online bookstore and library. If you’re like me, you like having a presence in the cloud for emergency storage. I keep all my writing tied to a Dropbox account, just in case an emergency happens; it’s especially useful when I need to pull a resume out on-the-spot and all I have access to is a computer. We’ve covered cloud apps like Dropbox and Zumodrive before, and I’ll let you know about one more;  Box.net is a service that until now, has catered to small-to-medium businesses. After releasing its Android app earlier this year, Box.net announced that they’d be offering a staggering 5gb of cloud space to their free account holders. This is more than double the 2gb (before the 250mb/referral bonus kicks in) that Dropbox offers, and is generally a good deal. In more recent news, however, Box’s updated their Android app as of 9AM Pacific this morning, adding two major features: the ability to “go into Read More

The folks at Box say the latest version is also more stable and runs more smoothly than earlier builds. The update should be available from the Android Market Friday morning at 9AM Pacific Time. File Access - Box.net Android App Not All It's Cracked Up to Be
Mini_discussion_bubble File Access - Posted Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:56:40 UTC +00:00
Just how much value will the Box.net app deliver for your Android (News - Alert) device? It may greatly depend on what you expect to get out of it. A recent Android Apps report found that Box.net will allow the user to view, access and share files.  The good news is that Box.net does offer some advanced features such as file versioning trash, a program that allows you to find and restore files that have been deleted. In addition, files and folders can be shared through Bluetooth or your phone’s text-based programs as a hyperlink to a web page – which is pretty cool. And, because these documents are sent as links, users are able to bypass the attachment size limitations of some e-mail providers.  Box.net will also send a courtesy e-mail notification to let users know when this shared link has been opened. When Box.net is used for the first time, Read More

Box.net introduces Android app - FierceContentManagement
Box.net took another step this week in their ongoing mobile strategy with the introduction of a new Android application. According to a blog post by Box.net CEO Aaron Levie, the idea behind the Box strategy is to provide a way for you to access your files from any device. They began with an iPhone and an iPad app, then this week moved to Android. According to Box, this is the fastest app they've ever built. What's more, you can upload content directly from your Android OS 2.0 or higher supported device to Box giving you cloud-based storage over and above the local storage on your Android phone. Levie is not about to be boxed into any single platform. As the Android platform becomes more popular, it makes sense for Box to provide support for it. Most companies with a mobile strategy have to pick which ones to support, but because Android Read More

15+ Enterprise Apps for Android
Android has seen astounding growth in both the consumer and enterprise markets, but the iPhone and BlackBerry have dominated enterprise-specific app development. That may be starting to change. Today Box.net released its cloud storage app for Android, and other enterprise-focused apps have been released recently as well. Given the enterprise interest in the iPad and the fact that several Android tablets are supposedly just around the corner, we could start seeing more enterprise Android development. Here are a few apps that are available now. One interesting trend to note: many of the clients for enterprise apps are actually created by third party companies. The newest of the bunch, Box.net just released its native Android application to the Android Marketplace today. Box.net has had an iPhone version available for some time now, so an Android app is a welcome addition. Box.net competitor Dropbox was an Android early adopter. Gmail: Gmail received an update and it's available in Android Market...but only to Android 2.2 users. That's sorta lame because it's a solid update! According to Jason, a man who has his priorities in order, the update brings: Besides "limited support" for Priority Inbox and better handling of replies and quoted text, you also have the improved UI, with starring, reply and more always visible at the top. Even more reasons to want Android 2.2 already. Twidroyd: Before Twitter for Android was released I used Twidroyd, the first best Twitter Android app (and previously known as twidroid). After seeing this latest update and Twidroyd's new LivePreview feature, I want to go back. It's the first Twitter Android app to preview linked web pages, photos and videos in the app. That means I don't always have to jump out of Twitter to see what people are linking to anymore. September 23, 2010 | by Andrew Kameka Box.net just got the memo: people want to store files in the cloud and be able to access them at any time from any place. You can’t really do that to full potential without having some access to your mobile phone, so Box.net has just released an Android app to get the job done. Similar to Dropbox, HomePipe, and a slew of other services/apps, Box.net provides access to viewing or sharing files with others. Users can sign-up for a free personal account that offers 1-15 GB storage and 25MB file size limits. A business account will add on protected sharing, faster uploads, Google Apps support, and much more. A third “Enterprise” level unlocks even more features for administration, Salesforce.com, and unlimited storage. I like BOX because it is much easier to use than the other Android Cloud Storage Apps. The UI is very user friendly - and my file explorer App, AndroZip Root, gives me the option to upload files to any of my BOX folders, regardless of where it might reside on my phone or tablet. Nice amount of free storage but uploading file size is limited, no streaming and no desktop client restrict what can be done. Also the whole box experience is a little clunky, needs tweaking. Overall an OK experience but I look forward to updates.

I have been able to get rid of all of the wasteful use of paper at my transmission shop! I no longer need to save invoices in a file cabinet I scan with cam scanner, upload everything from homework from my kids to handwritten letters,to any paperwork that I want to file, being able to organize and classify has just been such an awesome experience all around! Great job awesome app!

Tried to upload videos from my Droid Razr Maxx, but was met with error stating file size was too large. What is the sense of having 50GB of storage if you are limited to the size of file you can upload. YOUR COMPETITOR, "Dropbox" doesn't limit you.......Uninstall!

My ONLY gripe is that when I inadvertently try to upload duplicate files, my only options are "Upload new version" or "Rename". There needs to be a Skip option so bandwidth isn't wasted on duplicate files being uploaded. I can't keep track of the 100's of files I've uploaded and which ones I haven't yet.

I have 50gb of storage but it's almost as if the app gets handicapped by the service's file size limit. I have some massive PDFs that are books of music that it'd be great to have online so that I wouldn't need them if I go and play with friends. However, the size limit crippled my idea of having my music and practice books available whenever/wherever I need them so unfortunately I hardly use the app now.

Why does it have unnecessary file associations? Krishna 4.0 stars
I like the 50gb storage across all platforms but would prefer less storage space in return for a larger upload limit because phones shooting hd video will surpass 100mb and thus makes dropbox the only option for sharing outside of facebook. Good job though, keep up the good work!

Box is just good, offering 50gb space but you cannot upload more than 100 mb in a shot..... This is a beautifully designed and very useful app but currently has one problem on my Samsung Moment w/ Android 2.2: Since I don't want it running in the background when not in use I have to force close it. If you FC the app without logging out it will not find the network connection after restarting it and you can not upload or anything else needing a connection. Logging out and then logging back in restores the connection. If you use an automatic task killer you may need to log out of the app after every use until this issue is corrected.

Does not run in the background. Was looking for a cloud that does not waste battery while not being used unlike dropbox. You can also share files with a link. On a computer you can go to box dot com to upload and download your files.

I use this app for sharing photos taken with my phone. Very simple to create directories and begin batch uploading. However, there should be a way to resume the upload queue. Many times, the transfer would stop due to network difficulties and it is a pain to manually see which photos already finished uploading or not. 50GB is great, awesome even, but without a free Desktop a sync client is it is too difficult to utilize this space. Kinda like a catch 20. GNex

Dropbox offers me 25GB and more deeper integration on the device with the acquisition of HTC One S and it has automatic desktop synchronization with my Mac and my Linux/PC whereas Box limits the upload and most importantly does NOT provide free sync between all computers. I would most likely to subscribe in the future do a premium account on Dropbox than Box. Despite of all this negative factors the application itself is good and the web platform is really where the power of Box is located.

I like BOX because it is much easier to use than the other Android Cloud Storage Apps. The UI is very user friendly - and my file explorer App, AndroZip Root, gives me the option to upload ANY file to any of my BOX folders, regardless of where it might reside on my phone or tablet. Finding Help is easy utilizing the BOX user forums - and if you are unable to find the answer, the BOX team responds to your email quickly. All around GREAT App.

The 50 gigs of free data is somewhat desperate stab at Dropbox but this app distinguishes itself in other ways. It's all about the data, not the excess of Dropbox account with multiple clients. Here it's just the website and the app with a massive amount of cloud storage bridging them. One downside is the max file size of 100 mb so keep that in mind. But I appreciate the native Holo ui on my galaxy nexus. Highly recommended.

I LOVE this app! Because of its EXTREMELY intuitous interface, I use it WAY MORE OFTEN than any other app of its type and, despite my anti-cloud, hard storage sensibility, I find that I like it and make use of it IMMEASURABLY more than I ever thought I would. My complaints: 1.Uploads seem to crawl a bit, no matter what type of network or how strong the signal. 2.The file size limit is truly anemic though and is a pretty big pro HTC EVO 3D

Bulk upload, nice GUI, sharing easy, single file upload limit 100mb is only downside. Wanna protect 1080 memories not just pics.

File size? Box is giving you FOR FREE 50 GBs of storage. Back up your pictures, or files, or whatever. Thanks! The widget on Honeycomb is not reliable, and it would be nice to have a way to preview pictures in a gallery view without having to download each file, but other than that great job!

Limitations make this a useless app, especially with no way to easily access files from a PC. Sorry.

Would give a. 5 stars as soon as it's possible to upload an entire folder or at least multiple files like for example the dcim folder on my SII. I take a picture and next time I m on my wifi its on my box account. A security password wouldn't be wrong neither keep up the good work

Only allows individual files of 2MB or smaller. It will take forever to fill my 50GB allotment at that rate, and cannot upload original photos without first resizing them. An optional paid account eliminates this restriction. Slow uploads and a delay before files show up on the site. I take photos of rescue dogs for the purpose of publication to facilitate adoption, and for this purpose, Box works just fine.

I am a dropbox user but when I found that box is giving 50gb I thought I would give it a try but it is not as easy to use as dropbox. Even though I only have 3gb on dropbox I still use that more often because it is easy and convenient to use. My complaints with box are: 1. No automatic syncing like people have mentioned 2. No folder uploads. So I have to create a folder in box and drag it over. 3. 100mb upload limit. 4. The software is useless because it does not auto sync. But kudos for 50gb

God app but lacks a Desktop Client like that of Dropbox,as result there's no option to sync with desktop and slow uploading speed,it fails while uploading several files at the same time. And there's no option to skip previously downloaded files,we have to remove that file manually before uploading. I'm giving 5stars only because of Sony Ericsson's 50gb free storage offer otherwise your app deserves not more than 3 stars for now. I hope will improve it and add Dropbox like features in the upcoming versions.

I love the fact that it syncs with my tablet, notebook, pc and phone.. I really love free 50gb of storage.. I hope that is a forever thing and not some limited time (i.e. Sometime in the future I have to pay to keep or upgrade my account) The really big issue I have is the upload limit of 100mb.. I understand I can pay and upgrade to get up to 2gb, but that does not entice me, if I could pay and get a 5 or maybe even 10gb upload size them I would definitely consider paying for an upgrade.. Overall 4* outta 5* - Can't really complain about a free account with 50gb of cloud storage and the ability to download any of your pics or files and not lose any quality... Thanks....

How does Box expect to compete with Dropbox when they don't allow users to sync files without a business or enterprise account? This is a very simple thing and am shocked we can't sync files so that Box is as easy as storing files in a folder on the desktop for syncing. Quite a weak offering given the competition.

50GB for free is a quite good offer: of course it would be great if it accepts files larger than 100MB. Two issues on the app itself: 1) I'd like to choose how many files to download/upload simultaneously; and 2) network disconnection during uploading multiple files results in cancellation of the whole upload cue (including those been uploaded already).

Seriously? Bad strategy... nice spike in installs and I am not naive to the fact that you have to make money at some point, but no SYNC? Not a very elegant solution... Heck, offer less storage and free sync or give sync free for a year... get us hooked at least. With 50GB, prime the pump... and to think i have been a social media maven fool with a megaphone... (time to do some moonwalking backsteps) .. REALLY?

I signed up for 50 GB and got it. But this comes without desktop sync for which they charge $15 per month. Also, there are upload & download restrictions which most other such services give for free. Makes me feel like I wasted my time signing up. Was going to refer others, but will warn them now instead.
ryan 5.0 stars
I grabbed it because of the "50 gigs free upgrade" that was going on but I really didn't expect to use it that much. I've never had a "need" for a cloud storage let alone that much space. I am so glad that I did though, this program is so easy to use especially between different computers and my phone. I simply take a pic on the phone then say share with box and it uploads effortlessly. If I want to listen to a song on my home computer thats on my phone I just click upload and it's there in my Box to listen to instead of looking for the cable and dealing with windows and it's "installing device, please wait" nonsense. For people complaining about the file upload limit (100 megs) Win-Rar will let you break a large file up into 100 meg chunks letting you upload things that way. This program really can not be beat for the price of free.

So you get 50gigs free...right? Sounds great! Problem is you cant synchronize anything, and the uploading is tedious. If you want the sync app you got to pay for it. In short if you want to use it as a place to store files you'll likely never look at again ... this is the place for you!

Box is indispensable! The 50gb is definitely a deal breaker. I do wish for more sharing options apart from thru email. I share song ideas on FB and Twitter all the time and it's quite a hassle to copy the link from the email editor. 5 star if I can share files right away through statuses and tweets.
Malvin 4.0 stars
Remove the 100MB upload cap, have a desktop sync like dropbox, and charge me $30/yr to use the 50 gigs free and charge an extra for bigger tier like $5 per 10 gigs...then you'll be the bomb...for now, ur still behind dropbox for top spot
Ben 2.0 stars
So Wow I've got 50gb of space....unfortunately the app is missing allot of features. Can't move files around. Can't upload folders....or even select all without ticking each individual item. Also missing the PC integration that DropBox has. Basically if they want this service to be any good they pretty much need to rip off dropbox.
Mark 4.0 stars
Great app/ web feature. I'm using it to back up my music collection and other misc files. I don't think I'd ever pay $15 a month for this as I really don't NEED it. They should offer like a $20 per year option that would at least remove the upload cap, and possibly bump up the total storage a little bit. Or maybe even some other type of cheaper options that will at least increase their revenue and make it worth it for people like me. All in all, great app though! 50 gigs for free is amazing! I'd gladly take an option for a couple bucks a month for enhanced features.

So happy that I have the app now. This is a great website. Makes my life so much easier to share files with clients and colleagues.
Bardon 4.0 stars
The free 50gb lured me in this and even though its kinda new, this definitely rivals dropbox by a mile in terms of a mobile filehosting app. (especially now that dropbox runs on phone memory only while this one still supports sd ) My only problem are the small bugs in its connectivity, like how I would have to at least try 3 times for it to finally start uploading something and now with this update I can no longer see any updates on my uploads. Plz fix this asap. ~Thanks
Thomas 4.0 stars
At 50GB storage, I'd say it is the best out there. At present though, it is missing the ability to move files between folders inside the app.
Alex 5.0 stars
Box is excellent, I love it and I'm telling more of my friends & colleagues. However, I'll advise that you add the password option on the phone versions and also add a synchtonizable folder for pc version like drop box.

The only good thing I see from this app is the 50 free gigs, to share a file you only have one choice? Email? That's a minus..then the picture a file previews are tiny, another minus...i use CloudExplorer for skydrive because the picture previews are large, I'm not limited to just email when sharing a link to my file or pictures,i have text, facebook, tweeter, hotmail, gmail,& picasa & one that I don't use flkstr & oh yeah google music save over 50 gigs of your music then share it with friends a they can leave comments threw g+, so that's why I'm a google fan. Thee the 50 gigs sound great until you realize that even though your next to a pc you won't be able to use your browser or program to organizer or send files, pics & vid's it's pretty pathetic, I have to uninstall, plus for my media files like vid's & pics android has picasa taking care of all that for me & for backing up anything else & sharing with short links I have hotmail's skydive with cloud explorer for skydrive. Choose the one with the most options & oh yeah google music l keys you save over 50 gigs

I was using dropbox for about two years now. Had around 12 GB on it. However, I was not really happy with dropbox on Android. Box changed this opinion of mine. Moreover, knowing that majority of Fortune 500 companies use box shows how amazing and safe this app is. Thank you for 50 GB. Never will I have to worry about loosing my files yay. Must gave app. (Using SGN 4.0.2)

Very nice app, but desktop sync is not included with the free personal account; You'd have to upgrade to a business account to get that. I'm not sure what they're strategy is given that this feature comes standard with the products from their competition. Even though Dropbox gives you much less storage, you have all the features including desktop sync.

Its free, they are giving users 50GB of free storage hats off to these guys. But all this is preety useless without a desktop client. Forget about 50GB's how many people will even upload 1GB just from their cell phones ?? Going back to dropbox till it gets a desktop client for free.

This app has resolved my frustration trying to coordinate and share files between Google Docs and Office. Box has a really clean and attractive app UI in Android, and great Box Office Add-in, as well as a good web browser user site to close the loop. I've been moving Word and Excel files back and forth between Office all afternoon without problems, and assume Powerpoint will be equally easy. My only concern is the lack of data encryption during file transfer and when stored, unless you have an expensive enterprise account, but I will just not push anything over that I wouldn't want shared with the world, For my limited needs, that's not a big problem. The free 50Gb's was a nice gift.

Reznuk 0.0 stars
The app fails to refresh to show files loaded from the desktop, and often fails to even connect. Retrying several times eventually connects (usually) but that's very poor. Failing to find files that I can see are loaded from the desktop, is simply unacceptable. The UI is nice looking, and I signed up for the 50GB free, but Dropbox blows this out of the water by miles.
Michael 0.0 stars
Better interface than Dropbox, lets you download files to the Box folder instead of downloading it as a cache (stupid Dropbox) Only thing missing its a free desktop app

Finally a cloud service that is realistic about space requirements. The standard 5 gbs offers just required me to have 5-10 storage apps littering my tablet. Box is smart, once they have let me put 50 gbs of files on their servers, they will have me for life. Unlike OpenDrive, SkyDrive, HiDrive, SugarSync and ADrive all of which have inadequate apps and services or unnecessary limitations or requirements. I am uninstalling 7 apps (when you count newly irrelevant syncing tools) thanks to this promotion.

I had never used box before but I signed up for the 50gb. Didnt know Box was this good. I have been using Google Docs for a while and paying $20/yr for 80gb and i had .Mac/MobileMe's iDisk but they switched it to iCloud and discontinued iDisk, but with box i dont need to change the format of a file to edit it. Very nice app/service. This is better than any other virtual hard drive i have come across.

I actually really don't know. I opened an account and installed the app because of the 50gigs just to realize that uploading files from my desktop would require using the web interface.. No desktop app for free accounts.. what am I going to use it for when I already have a free Dropbox account that actually allows me to easily upload files from my desktop?
Remington 0.0 stars
I am glad that box is giving away 50GB to anyone that has android phone. The UI is ok even compared to dropbox, but with this you use the to seamlessly open, edit and save documents. That is a must have for me, not really a need to download it and reupload the edited file. Finally the great thing about this service goes beyond the app where you can edit documents, spreadsheets and pictures right in the browser with a wide variety of services to change them. I personally use the google services with it, just because they are free. A must have for people that want to have a lot of storage and do what they want in the cloud, makes me wish we had this when I was in college.

Getting the 50GB was a nice bonus, but the app lacks something as simple as being able to move a file to another directory...and only supports downloading 1 file at a time from the PC. Couldn't upload a 125MB video file...exceeds upload limit.

As a service Box is a fail unless you're a business. Windows folder sync costs $45/month! Make it $15, and I'm all over this. Upload cap is stupid. Is Box owned by a wireless carrier? Very poor business strategy for non-business use.
Matty 0.0 stars
I can't believe this app is only 4 Stars. The problem with Android is greed. Once people get what they want, they want more and start criticizing every little small thing which is a shame

If you want desktop integration, use Gladinet to mount a network disk drive. Sign up with many email addresses (does not violate terms of service, I read the whole thing) and enjoy 50, 100, 150, etc GB of long term storage. Encrypt with winrar before uploading since box offers no encryption for free accounts.

Seems like I've found a new replacement for dropbox and with 50 gig free I can't complain. Only thing id like is an option to upload an entire folder instead of having to select all the files inside one at a time then uploading them all.
Ken 0.0 stars
You can upload a folder. Just choose bulk load option and you can drag and drop a folder. Not as nice as dropbox but like the 50 GB.
Jason 0.0 stars
Though many suggest sync feature, i don't like auto-sync files to the box. This is not a high speed connection storage space, thus sync will not work well, worst of all you have no idea if the box already has a copy of all ur files you wish to store. So i rather select what i want to store in the box & not let the box auto-sync all my files. The feature i would like to have is to able to perform basic file management within my box. Like move files from folder to folder.
Jamilah 0.0 stars
I finally have an excuse to dump dropbox. My only wish is the ability to move files from within the app. That would make it 5 stars. Otherwise it's still and awesome app. And for 50gbs who's really complaining?

Great alternative to Google & dropbox. The app needs more work though. 1)It crashes on ICS on SGS occasionally. 2)Uploading video files >50MB always drops out midway thru (on wifi) An instant upload feature with native res photos would be very nice to have, unlike the image downsizing with Google

What's with this culture of princes and princesses? You are getting the app, free of charge. You are getting 50Gb worth of storage, free of charge. And while the app/service is not perfect, you still have the chutzpa to complain about minor limitations? You know Box is not a charity, they're a business. They're giving the storage and app away hoping you will upgrade and remove some of the limitations, no reason to lambaste and bad-mouth them. App review: Great storage (with offer), app needs work. Add either select all or folder upload and I'll re-rate. They have added batch upload, which is a huge improvement. Still needs SSL if they want 5 stars.
Ryba 0.0 stars

50 Gigs free is nice' but its a pain in the butt to upload multiple files because of the file size limits in the uploads. Also' how hard is it to put a select all to check all files in a folder? The problem with box is once you upload all your files, you can't batch download them unless you subscribe. One at a time only.

No desktop sync. No batch upload on Android. Doesn't show up the service in the share menu. What do they think?

But slower app performance, no pin lock, and worst of all....25 MB per file upload limit. Nice try Box.net, try again later please.

Does not allow deleting of files in account. Also there are no long click options when you click on a fille. no multi-select options. Needs much work. At least boxroid allows deleting of files.
