In what I still consider a violation in the highest order, Microsoft has updated its Bing application for Android. Bing announced yesterday that they are updating the Android version of their mobile app. The new update brings the following updates: “What’s Nearby”, “Bookmark Images”, Expand Your Search”, and “Search, Share, Decide and Book”. First, “What’s Nearby” will automatically list the restaurants, hotels, and other store locations based on your location and search. This is good for if you are trying to find that restaurant near your hotel. Secondly, don’t allow yourself to be tied down to bookmarking the whole webpage that contains an image. By using “Bookmark Images” you will be able to bookmark the actual image itself. Thirdly, make it easy to find anything you need, from your applications, contacts, and the web using Bing’s new “Expand Your Search” update. Microsoft has released a slew of updates for Bing on the desktop and mobile platforms. The Android app is included among those updates thanks to a few new features made to Microsoft’s search application. Bing now shows “What’s nearby” when you perform a search. Provided that the user has granted the app permission to view his or her location, Bing will show restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels, government or community centers, and transportation locations by category. It also supplies contact and map information for those locations. Search has also been granted an upgrade as the homescreen widget can search apps or phone-stored information much like the Google Search widget. A search for “Android” will turn up contacts, apps, or files with that word, or you can perform a traditional web search. [Update]: It appears this is only available in the United States, as of the time of this writing. If you’re not in the United States, then it’s likely you won’t find this app unless there’s been a mistake. Not on Verizon but craving a nice helping of Bing? You’re in luck because it seems the period of exclusivity struck up between Microsoft and Verizon has ended and Bing is now on the marketplace for all to download. We know a lot of you aren’t fans of Bing. We get that. But competition is healthy, and who’s to say Microsoft can’t have their own spot in the Android market? Microsoft announced today the official release of their Bing app for Android OS. The only problem is that it’s only available for Verizon devices (it shouldn’t take long to get that out of the way). The Bing search app for Android is very similar to the desktop version in that everyday you get a new featured picture, plus the ability to look through previous featured pics. The app also features endless scrolling search with the ability to “swipe through image previews straight to the host site.” Best of all, Bing will work with Android’s speech to text, even allowing you to use Bing Maps navigation. Writing about an official Bing app on Android seems so wrong in so many ways, but after playing with it for 5 minutes, I’m actually sort of impressed. In cheating on your cat kind of way. (Huh? Bing maps is awful. Locator is off, traffic is not remotely up to date, and directions instruct you to leave the road you are on, turn around, and get back on. Other pre-installed bing features are ok, but slow. Nothing stellar.

Why does this app always fail to clear someones browser history. Could it be the developers are collecting information, on the people the people using it?. I suspect that Microsoft may just be capable of such a thing, just as Verizon, and Google are doing right now. I do not appreciate these various Corporations, software developers, web browser developers, application developers, and cell phone service providers, collecting all of this data on people. It could be used against you.

Yahoo and Bing are the same search engine. Stay away from Google, they steal your info. I like Bing because it has its own browser that keeps you safe. And its smooth, if you like windows then you will like it. I have no problem with Bing at all. I use Google too but since the new privacy agreement they have i use it less.

BLOAT on Verizon HTC Merge. No uninstall or ability to review from phone. Is this actionable as a 1st amendment violation preventing our ability to rank and remove such? Is it also actionable with States Attorneys General offices as it gathers data we did not allow it permission to and reports it to who knows where without our consent or ability to disable. I would start launching letters to the BBB.Org and Attorneys General offices and referring to such apps as acting in ways known to be used by Terrorists in subverting data for unknown reasons in order to locate persons without knowledge or consent, cause them more bad press than bloat can ever be worth to them and flood review mags with questions of why a supposedly great product has to be forced on people in order to have any downloads? Are they that scared of the apps failure and so lacking in faith in it?

There is no apparent way to zoom on images searched. The overall UI is ok to nice, but if you cannot zoom in on an image, it's usually impossible to view them in any useful way. The old BING that originally came on the Droid X worked perfectly.

This app seems to be working fine on my droid 2. I got it off the market, so I can't comment on the can't unistall comments. I would like to see bing rewards intergated into it, so you can do that when your away from a computer. But the app is working fine for me.

widget is too slow, and goes to fullscreen upon tapping the text field. search results have giant text and line breaks, so the only thing I see when I first search is ads; scrolling down to see real results sucks. please make this sleeker so I can actually use it rather than google.

My guess is most people rating 1 star have never really used Bing and are basing their ratings on some emotional prejudice. The fact is Bing gives better search results than Google, and their app is much more full featured. dealwithit.gif. -1 star for being uninstallable.

I like Bing and the search results are great. I was surprised at first on the low rating until i saw that all the low ratings were from people who don't even use Bing. I understand their frustration from not being able to uninstall, but rating it negatively seems pointless.Don't understand why people rate something they don't even use.

It's rather irritating that Bing nags me to enable location services every time I launch it. Even if I do enable location, most of the "local" news is from New York City, 300 miles away. The address given for one restaurant is actually a townhouse near mine, the restaurant is really several miles away. The addresses for another "nearby" restaurant and a hotel are also each a couple of miles from their actual locations. The Bing UI is well designed, however.

When it comes to user friendliness, bing maps got it right. I am using it on Droid X. Its fast, voice recognition is better than google, I like how it shows next turn on the top of the map. Very convenient. Of course if you decided to use Google navigation with battery draining GPS on, then bing maps is useless. They took what google maps and improved it to the max. I like how they optimized voice commands and map view.

Android Version is bad Got a Droid Bionic 2 days ago. Thought I'd try Bing to get directions for a 10 mile trip. No voice directions! Whereas my Samsung Omnia 2 (Windows Mobile) had good voice directions. Also on the Droid the GPS fix was so crazy....kept jumping all over the place every few seconds. To the point the maps were just no use. First they took away gas prices, now on Android the maps are useless. Oh, well...I tried!

Useless without Zoom There is no apparent way to zoom on images searched. The overall UI is ok to nice, but if you cannot zoom in on an image, it's usually impossible to view them in any useful way. The old BING that originally came on the Droid X worked perfectly.

Nice UI but flawed database It's rather irritating that Bing nags me to enable location services every time I launch it. Even if I do enable location, most of the "local" news is from New York City, 300 miles away. The address given for one restaurant is actually a townhouse near mine, the restaurant is really several miles away. The addresses for another "nearby" restaurant and a hotel are also each a couple of miles from their actual locations. The Bing UI is well designed, however.

Better than google maps When it comes to user friendliness, bing maps got it right. I am using it on Droid X. Its fast, voice recognition is better than google, I like how it shows next turn on the top of the map. Very convenient. Of course if you decided to use Google navigation with battery draining GPS on, then bing maps is useless. They took what google maps and improved it to the max. I like how they optimized voice commands and map view.
